How to get the Bills to Superbowl XLV

So...you say that the Buffalo Bills seem like they’re miles away from a championship.  The talent on the team isn’t good enough to field a Superbowl-caliber team, and the coaching staff is less than spectacular at this point.  Right?  Right.

So?

Can the Bills make Superbowl XLV?  Probably not.  But I challenge you to come up with a better plan than mine.  THIS is how the Bills, if it’s in any way possible, get to Dallas in 2011.

***

I want to point this out to start the column.  I am not PICKING the Bills to make the Superbowl.  I am not predicting this series of moves I’m about to lay out as what the Bills will do.  I’m just simply saying, if the ONLY goal in the world for the football team, was making the Superbowl in 2011, THIS is how they should do it.

Step 1 - Get Donovan McNabb

Seriously...do you have a BETTER idea?  ESPN’s Sal Palantonio is reporting that the Bills, Browns, and Broncos have called the Eagles to ask about acquiring one of their three QBs.  This is great news.  I don’t want Vick.  I don’t want Kevin Kolb.  If I’m planning on getting to Superbowl XLV, I’m going to get a guy that has been to a Superbowl before.

McNabb is NOT too old.  He’ll be 33 at the start of the upcoming season.  Tom Brady will be 33 and Peyton Manning will be 34.

McNabb is not washed up.  His 92.9 QB rating in 2009 was the 3rd highest of his career.  I think QB rating is a bunch of garbage because it generally tries to convince you that a crappy QB is kinda good.  So I’ll use the ACTUAL numbers.  In 2009, McNabb posted 22 TDs and just 10 INTs.  That’s a TYPICAL McNabb season.  For his career, his TD to interception ratio is better than 2 to 1.

This is NOT Tim Tebow (massive project).  This is NOT Sam Bradford, or Jimmy Clausen.  If you want MOST LIKELY to succeed THIS YEAR, it’s Donovan McNabb and there is little debate.  Sorry Michael Vick, Tyler Thigpen, and Dan Le-whateveryourname is...Mr. McNabb is the BEST option - hands down.

Step 2 - Figure out your personnel for the 3-4

I wrote earlier that I’m into getting Richard Seymour to come to Buffalo.  He’s an unrestricted free agent that would probably like nothing more than to STICK IT to New England.  The Bills offer him that chance, and he’s succeeded in a 3-4 system before.

I’ll take Seymour and while you’re at it, how about Vince Wilfork?  That’s a start.  Ok, so the line is set.  At linebacker you will have TWO rookies.  Aaron Maybin can actually participate in a full season and perhaps even play a position that he’s fit to play.  In addition to Maybin, I’m trying to get my hands on LB Rolando McClain out of Alabama.

That’s right...9th overall, I’d consider a LINEBACKER.  I generally hate this idea, but I’m not building for the future, or learning to win, I’m going for it now.

Step 3 - Trade Marshawn Lynch for a bag of footballs, or maybe a draft pick

Addition by subtraction.  He’s not worth it.  Scan the waiver wire and find a guy the way that you found Fred Jackson.

Step 4 - Think about getting another WR

Terrell Owens is likely out the door, and if Donovan McNabb is on the team, then he’s definitely gone.  You don’t need to find an All-Pro.  Take a look at what McNabb did for Jeremy Maclin and Desean Jackson.  It’s no coincidence that McNabb has had success with a bunch of different receivers.  He might be able to make it work with Evans, Hardy, Reed (who you’ll have to resign), and Stevie Johnson.  Toss in Shawn Nelson at TE, and Fred Jackson out of the backfield in a Brian Westbrook mold.  That might work.

Step 5 - Let the players play

Get after it.  Sean Payton and Jim Caldwell.  How many Superbowl appearances between the two of them 3 days ago?  ZERO.  How many playoff wins between the two of them one year ago?  ONE.  Chan Gailey doesn’t need to have experience in the postseason to win in the postseason.  He needs great players.  Then he needs to go for some 4th downs, and some onsides kicks, and NOT punt when it’s 4th and 2 and the Bills are down 10 points with 6 minutes left.

Step 6 - The other stuff

There you have it.  I've added WINNERS to the team.  I've added talent.  I've added NFL credibility.  I've helped the offense and the defense.  Is there more to do?  Sure.  You can toss in some marginal moves on the offensive line.  Oh yeah, I almost forgot...they’ll also have to:

Win the turnover battle

Run and stop the run

Run to set up the pass

Pass to set up the run

Sit around and watch pigs fly

Protect the QB

Allow QB to make plays with his legs

Get a few bounces

Stay healthy

Visit hell, which will have frozen

Overcome adversity

Win the lottery

Play with intensity

Win the battle in the trenches

Bring the Stanley Cup to the stadium to fire up the home crowd

Win in cold weather

Win on the road

Get after the QB

Play to win

Avoid playing “not to lose”

Take shots down the field

Use the screen pass

Hit the QB hard

Create turnovers

Avoid turnovers

And...what else?  Am I missing anything?  I think that’s everything.

Ok, so will ALL that stuff happen?  Probably not.  How about we start with Step 1 and see where this thing goes?

Go get Donovan McNabb.

I like it
02/08/2010 3:38PM
Haha love it!
I would love to see all that happen but we all know it won't.....best part: bring the Stanley cup to the stadium to fire up the crowd
02/08/2010 3:54PM
Huh?
We are supposed to listen to Jeremy for football knowledge? The guy who loved JP and Willis?
02/08/2010 3:54PM
unforgivable things
I'd kill a baby to get Donovan on this team!
02/08/2010 3:55PM
Boring
Yeah, I get it White, you don't like Trent Edwards. How many ways can you slice it?
02/08/2010 3:57PM
ditto
Here he goes again...QB...blah, blah, blah
02/08/2010 4:01PM
Okay....
Sign all the good players and draft good players, too. we c an do that since there are apparently NO OTHER TEAMS IN JEREMY WHITE'S NFL. WASTE OF MY TIME.
02/08/2010 4:05PM
Other teams?
Dude...ALL of these moves are very doable. Relax.
02/08/2010 4:06PM
Impressive...
I must admit, I like the thought process and my reaction of, "Hmmm"...
02/08/2010 4:10PM
realistic?
trade what for mcnabb and still have pick to get mcclain? sign wilfork and seymour to be under contract with kelsay stroud spencer johnson williams schobel and maybin.
02/08/2010 4:11PM
Impossible
Of course it's impossible as your list of extras makes clear. The real concern is: is there any realistic way to get to SB48 or 49? If Gailey and Modrak (and Mr. Wilson) perform as they have in the past, the answer is, as with SB45, impossible.
02/08/2010 4:36PM
Also
Bring Chuck Dickerson back as D-line coach.
02/08/2010 4:38PM
How to get the Bills to Superbowl XLV??
Buy their tickets early and fly doen the day prior
02/08/2010 4:43PM
White Nails it
Can we get a petition together to have Jeremy fun this team I'd be very happy
02/08/2010 4:44PM
Embrarrassing
Wilfork is a restricted free agent and if New England lets him go they will do so by trading him for a first round draft pick... so then you can't draft a LB at #9. Also, the price of Seymour and Wilfork would be insane and extremely unrealistic for how this team operates. If you are going to post a story with unrealistic scenarios you might as well have us trading for Drew Brees and and Chris Johnson
02/08/2010 4:49PM
great post!
hahahaha! Best thing I've read on the Bills since the season ended. Great job.
02/08/2010 4:55PM
SUPABO and McNabb?
Never thought much of McNabb, sure he's good, but not great, had his chance to win the title and didn't. Maybe McNabb could be like Elway, win later in life, otherwise I don't quite follow that line of reasoning as making the Bills Super Bowl ready. Hell, Super Bowl, I can't even think of playoffs. It's a nice winter dream article, that's about it. The only way the Bills are going to the SUPABO next year are as spectators.
02/08/2010 4:58PM
Picks
McNabb would not cost you even CLOSE to the 9th overall pick, and neither would Wilfork. These scenarios are...somewhat possible. Whether or not it would work is QUITE another story though.
02/08/2010 5:02PM
Ummm....
Have the Bills even hired a coach yet???
02/08/2010 5:10PM
The only plan that will work
Get 30 of the other teams to fold.
02/08/2010 5:15PM
bills called for vick not mcnabb
mcnabb wants a new contract at close to $80 million, if he's traded its going to be the rams or stay in philly. bills called for vick.
02/08/2010 5:54PM
Bills called for Vick?
How on earth do you know? Do you work for the Eagles?
02/08/2010 5:56PM
Blasts from the Past...
Maybe we can pry Frank Reich away from Peyton, see what Haven Moses is up to, and check on Bruce...Forget coaching, how about Schottenheimer at linebacker? I'll take all these guys TODAY, RIGHT NOW - at least they KNOW football...
02/08/2010 6:08PM
i like it
it sound like a decent plan, dont know if they will getMcnabb but that would be sweet
02/08/2010 6:24PM
White is a joke!
This guy flip flops on every subject he brings up. talks too much about lousy whimsically impossible shows like lost, and looks down it pretentious nose as half of the callers that essentially sign his check every week. he is not the only problem with the morning show, white and his band or merry idiots (mendola, haggar et al.) are tacky, corny, and often rather dated. get over yourselves. i'd rather have jim brinson, at least he's credible. simon was listenable when paired with another adult in the room...
02/08/2010 6:31PM
What the Bills need
Is an African-American quarterback! Enough with the 'Lilly white' quarterbacks!
02/08/2010 6:59PM
HAAAA!!
The only way the Bills will go to the Superbowl issss.....Ralph will have to kick the bucket, and I don't think the old man is going anywhere anytime soon. Evil doesn't die quick.
02/08/2010 7:06PM
Not Bad
I've been saying get Mcnab since midseason knowing kolb is thier future since seeing Kolb play earlier in the season. I think using trades and midround draft pic's you could get Mcnab. Rolando McClain would be a great pic at # 9.
02/08/2010 7:06PM
DREAM ON
BUT I SURE LIKE THE STANLEY CUP PART!
02/08/2010 7:46PM
Peanutbutter Pete
I still think that VICK to buffalo is the answer....HE CAN DO IT!
02/08/2010 7:46PM
NICE PLAN!!
Nice plan however im a 51 yr old male and i have a better shot of getting pregnant than than any of these moves happening!
02/08/2010 8:02PM
Sorry Jer
i stopped reading after number one. So McNab is the answer because he's won how many Superbowls? McNabb is old and is a far cry from the 2 QB's i saw yesterday. Plus really? You want to give up 2 draft picks for him? Don't you need those pics for a LT a WR and NUMEROUS 3-4 personnnel? Why did you bring Nix in here who's a draft guy? To give away picks? Irresponsible. I know you want a QB, you can't give away draft picks to get one
02/08/2010 8:17PM
good stuff
I love Mcnabb. I ama syracuse guy and he has been a winner id whole career. Plus he has s trong arm its a must in the Buff.
02/08/2010 8:55PM
who knows?
If the Bills get McNab that's fantastic, if not oh well, they just have to try harder to win games not to lose games when it counts.
02/08/2010 9:09PM
Re:Sorry Jer
so by your logic, bills need to get one among mannings, Brady, Favre, Breeze and Rothlisberger..bcoz they have won SB...Good job. Mcnabb is the closest Bills can get in acquiring a veteran QB with a winning record and we all know it all starts from thereunless you have a really dominating D.
02/08/2010 9:12PM
Re: Sorry Jer
How many superbowl winning QBs are available. Certainly none of the QB's in the draft have won any. McNabb is the only probowl QB that is going to be a legitimate option. If we put the team around him he could win the big game, a change of scenery would do wonders for him.
02/08/2010 9:30PM
it's the bills
Great thoughts. Until ralph gets pushed over niagara falls or gets lost in his industrial size box of depends, we will continue to get half assed coached and front office. We will prolly trade for chad pennington, then waste 8 picks in the draft on db's. Hey ralph get off your motorized wheelchair and sell the naming rights to the stadium, and sell the team to jim kelly...this is a man with a pulse and that wants the best for the team and the city!
02/08/2010 9:35PM
Last piece of the puzzle
QBs are the last piece of the puzzle, not the first. I love the idea of McNabb, but it has been proven over and over that if you put a great or above average QB on a bad team, then they are just average or worse: Jim Kelly at the end of his career (he had more good years in him, but that line would have killed him), Kurt Warner on the NY Giants, Steve Young on the Bucs, Bledsoe on the Bills, Favre in the bad years at GB. All of the good teams have acquired a good QB and surrounded him with talent to make him great (it is not the other way around). Reference the Colts(Harrsion, Faulk, James, Wayne), Giants (Plax, Barber, Jacobs, Line), New Orleans (Bush, Shockey, Thomas, Colston, Henderson, Meachem)
02/08/2010 10:25PM
Step 1
Sorry, I can't even get beyond step one. I would rather take my chances with Kolb, at least he can run for his life.
02/08/2010 10:48PM
LA TIgers
I dont think this franchise will ever resurrect..at least not in Buffalo. Within 5 years Los Angeles will have a new team, our old one. ReBorn as the LA Tigers.. or some other animal. Ralph has this all worked out. Keep the seats warm until the moving truck and hearse arrive.
02/08/2010 11:14PM
I like It
get McNabb ..... great idea - and about the time that the Bills are 'competitive', McNabb will be in his 5th year of retirement. Bills - Super Bowl - the two ideas don't belong in the same sentence.
02/08/2010 11:17PM
re:white is joke
Agreed. Simon tries to be "cool" with the morning no talents. Help Simon to regain his credibility and lose White.
02/08/2010 11:37PM
one thing
i think the notion of acquiring someone capable of playing left tackle in the nfl is way higher on the list than just some fleeting allusion thrown in nonchalantly. i love the interior line if it's healthy (because it's mean as hell) and you can pretty much mail in right tackle, but we need a lt almost as badly as a qb.
02/08/2010 11:53PM
I hate reading this junk
I been optimistic for so long, now after not making it to the playoffs for over a decade, i lost that feeling, I am now in the mind set, of I'll believe it when I see it, it's just to frustrating with this team
02/08/2010 11:56PM
Re: White is a joke
White is one of the best guys on this station. I like most of his opinions...but even if you dont' agree he's entertaining. If you watched LOST you'd be ecstatic to hear any theories about it....and his 'dated' references help me remember great things like 80's movies...Sega Genesis and bean bag chairs.
02/09/2010 12:04AM
Step 1 & 3
Step 1: it's good to hear the Bills called the Eagles...i'd take any of their QB's! As for step 3: wrong !!! The Bills need Lynch ! Fred Jackson has 1 & DONE written all over him!!!
02/09/2010 12:20AM
Bills will continue to suck
As long as Wilson is the owner, this team will remain a basement dweller.
02/09/2010 1:33AM
Freddy Jackson
Whats your plan for after this season? draft another HB becuase Fred Jackson is about to hit that running back age of 30. We all know what happens then
02/09/2010 2:59AM
Mcnab will never happen
Sign David Carr, a cheap quality free-agent. Trade down from the 9th pick to 15-19, draft a OT. Use early 2nd Rd pick to draft any qb. YES trade Lynch, he is a 8 game suspension waiting to happen. Carr threw for a lot of yards in Houston, even though hewas the most sacked qb for many seasons. Give him decent protection and his strong arm can do the same thing McNab's can at a bargain price. Switching to a 3-4 we will need a bargain to convert seamlessly.
02/09/2010 3:48AM
McNabb is a choker
You"ll never get to the Super Bowl that way because McNabb will choke. He has won 1 NFC Championship out of 5 tries I believe? Sure that's more than Buffalo recently, but I'd rather take Kolb.
02/09/2010 3:55AM
choker
from all my times watching Mcnabb all i have seen is a guy who looses when it counts
02/09/2010 6:19AM
Fantastic insights
Right on Jeremy !! Great article . I think Bills fans would be overjoyed . My friends & I have been discussing this Mcnabb idea for months The nay sayers probably know nothing about football so don't take them seriously
02/09/2010 6:29AM
better idea
the best idea is to just volunteer the entire to be dancers in the halftime show,we havent seen blue oyster cult yet have we?? i got a fever for some cow bell!..that is the best way to get the bills to the superbowl..because that plan is about as realistic as yours or anyone elses that is pipe dreaming about this team being anything but fodder for the next decade...they will win no more then 4 games next year.
02/09/2010 6:46AM
see through you
let's see he graduated from SU and so did you! hmm wonder why you want him! Plus don't you want a reason to renew season tix? Fact is McNAbb had better talent on Philly over the past 10 years and couldn't get the job done. Case closed, rediculous move
02/09/2010 6:49AM
this coming from..
this coming from a guy who things Sabre managment is great and Miller is elite, and the Sabres will win the cup every year.
02/09/2010 6:50AM
Dear Jim
DEar Jim, I'd love to play for Buffalo, i'd fit right in, signed Donovan McNAb who couldn't even beat Dallas once this year
02/09/2010 8:35AM
Fantasy Land
That posting is clear fantasy land, it will never happen. Didn't Buffalo trade for a QB years ago with a lot of miles on him as well?? He was good for half a season then bottomed out. I will give White credit however for leaving comments on here. Most of the Gestapo at GR refuse to open up their writings for comments because they know they are wildly despised.
02/09/2010 9:22AM
McNabb is worthy of ALL Hype
I have one dispute with your McNabb assessment. You mentioned not giving up a first round pick. Of our first round picks in the last ten years, I can think of a few first round names off-hand that are not worthy of a McNabb caliber player, even with McNabb towards the second half of his career. Mike Williams, J.P. Losman, Willis McGahee, Marshawn Lynch, and Donte Whitner. A first round pick does not guarantee that much better of chance of at a good player over the second round. I would take the established McNabb over a potential Ogden all day. A great QB will win more with an average LT over an average QB with a great LT. I may be in the minority on that belief, but McNabb is worth it. As an organization, Buffalo needs to separate themselves from Denver and Cleveland. Denver and Cleveland would also offer a second round pick, just like the Bills. I could even make the argument that Denver is a star quarterback away from being elite. Buffalo needs to offer the 1st round pick to have that edge over other competitors. I also don't think we need another WR. I feel Hardy or Johnson could fit that role well. Trade Lynch for LBs or OL. Depth is needed at LB for the 3-4. Thank-you again.
02/09/2010 9:40AM
Mcnabb Would Help
Mcnabb right now would be a big improvement over anything else the Bills could do RIGHT NOW. Is he Manning,Brees,Farve or Brady, No but I don`t think their available. Mcnabb would make the OL better because defense`s would respect him more. That will also help the run game because they know he will throw the ball down field. That would also make the WR`s better because they know if they keep working to get open he will get to them. I think the reason they started out well on offense this year was they had TO. and defenses played back a little, until they realized Trent was not going to anything but dump it off. The defenses then started to creep up toward the line which hurt the run game. Fitz was better because he would throw down field he just isn`t good at getting there. So yes Mcnabb would work untill the Bills can find thier future QB without reaching and praying in the draft. Because there is noway there is a QB in the draft this year worth the money Matt Stafford got last year. Besides you have to get big men set in the lines first, or it won`t matter who your QB is.
02/09/2010 9:52AM
Sounds like a plan
If only I could think with that optimism right now
02/09/2010 10:00AM
Love it
love the game
02/09/2010 11:07AM
Coach
Peppers is out of Carolina so they say. Work him as the Sam and Maybin as the Will, use the 9 spot for D/O-line
02/09/2010 11:12AM
A shot at superbowl
Why not just sign the unrestricted players to one year contracts? Sign to win it now? Give Peppers $20M etc.....before new bargain is in place...go for it..win it now..before Snyder does the exact same thing
02/09/2010 12:22PM
Sure you're not confused with Superbolw XXV?
You want the Buffalo Bills to get to Superbowl XLV? Build a time machine and go back to 1990 and transport the '90 Bills back to 2010. Thats the only way they are getting to Dallas next year!
02/09/2010 12:39PM
Bills to the SuperBowl XLV
Buy them a ticket!
02/09/2010 12:54PM
McChoke? Really?
Dude, you don't win SB's with a leader that can't perform in clutch times! I live outside Philly and have hated McNabb for the past decade, I would be severely disappointed if our Bills got him. I would rather have Vick than him... hehas more to prove.
02/09/2010 12:55PM
Re: McNabb is a choker
I'd rather "Choke" in the playoffs than to not make it all. I know, lets get a Super Bowl winning qb, theres Brees, Brady, the Mannings, Favre, Roethlisberger, Warner (wait he's retired). Take your pick, explain to me how you'd get him over McNabb who seems to be available and has won and has been to the playoffs numerous times and a Super Bowl
02/09/2010 1:54PM
McNabb?
really?
02/09/2010 2:03PM
it was all in fun
this article was not meant to be true fact it was suppose to be fun, I enjoyed it and through it got me thinking of some real scenarios, such as trading out of 9 to the mid-teens for extra picks. Conditional pick for McNabb similar to the Jets/ Favre deal, trade Lynch (picks or player), make a play for Willie Parker (Ilike the idea of a backfield of Jackson and Parker)...and so on
02/09/2010 2:10PM
Best Idea
With NO salary cap, sign as many FA's as you can for a 1 year deal. Even with Cash to Cap, they could over pay at least five guys and upgrade the team. Win before the lockout.
02/09/2010 2:57PM
Get Real
Yeah, and the Bills are gonna beat out Belicheks Patriots, Ryans Jets and Parcells Dolphins, right? Lets face it the Bills are the worst team in their division. It will be a while before they even make the playoffs. BTW did anybody see McNabbs last 2 games against the Cowboys? He stunk up the place.
02/09/2010 3:27PM
Stallworth
Jeremy, What do you think of Dante Stallworth coming to the Bills? He was just released by the Browns and would be a great fit to fill in that extra receiver.
02/09/2010 4:26PM
unforgivable things
I'd give BOTH my juevos to get mcnabb on this team!
02/09/2010 6:37PM
smokin'
this team is doo-doo will always be doo-doo and then it will sadly move away and win a superbowl that year
02/09/2010 7:17PM
McNabb
if he were still ant good do tou think the Eagle fans would want him to hit the road
02/09/2010 9:07PM
Big Johnny
Ralph Wilson is waiting a couple years so he can sign Brady after the Pats are through with him
02/09/2010 11:33PM
Whitey's idea
Jeremy is just trying to help morale
02/10/2010 9:45AM
Do it well
Whatever the Bills decide on regarding their offense, defense, and special teams, my only hope is that they find the players who can perform and play with a lot of heart and effort. Too often in the past, we have watched players "going through themotions."
02/10/2010 10:06AM
Buffalo Brownfields
LOL two draft picks for "I get hurt McNabb"? Thank god I got Sirius so I don't have to listen to this dribble in the morning anymore!
02/10/2010 10:22AM
These people are assclowns
They wright that McNabb is not the answer, but they don`t say who is. The only suggestion so far has been David Carr or Vick (REALLY). If you think their better than McNabb I want what your smoking. If were available and I don`t he`s coming to Buffalo anyway, but if he were to come he`d be the best option short of (Brady, Manning or Brees) possible. I just think if you had a QB that could manage the game and make some plays, the DEFENSE usually wins championships just ask Trent Dilfer.
02/10/2010 11:03AM
I Got It!!!
Let's watch the re-runs of Super Bowls 25,26,27,and 28. We got there!
02/10/2010 12:45PM
How do the Bills get to the Super Bowl?
StubHub
02/11/2010 2:23AM
Q.E.D
The best way to get the Bills to the super bowl is to move them to another city when the hopelessly senile owner dies. Once in the larger market with an owner who actually wants to win a super bowl, their chances increase greatly. Just the change in setting and owner will help draw more high profile free agents. In Buffalo, there's this killer tag team of an unattractive rust belt city, and a meddling, cheap owner. Not a good combo.
