Buffalo, NY (WBEN/AP) Area soccer fans are ready for another World Cup match for Team USA as they take on Portugal Sunday. A win for the U.S. and they would move on to the elimination round after Ghana and Germany tied on Saturday. There will be opportunities for fans to gather at various locations around the area. Canalside is hosting an viewing party that begins at 4:00 p.m.. with vendors and food trucks to provide refreshments. Meanwhile, on Hertel Avenue, the party will be centered at Mes Que who caters to the soccer crowd. They have also set up a video screen outside on North Park Avenue. Mes Que manager, Greg Nicotera says that he figured the World Cup would bring out the fans, "I had a small inkling that based on the increase in soccer activity in Buffalo. Fans that I've seen frequent Mes Que and there seems to be a bit more of them, with that said, I was really impressed with the number of people that showed up (on Monday) to watch the USA play."
With a win over the Portuguese and reigning world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo, the U.S. would accomplish a pair of American firsts: reaching the knockout stage of consecutive World Cups and advancing with a game to spare.
''This is now the moment where you can prove yourself. This is the moment where you can step up and play those guys and put them in place,'' U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. ''So we want to put Cristiano and his team in his place.''
The Americans opened with a 2-1 win over Ghana on Monday behind John Brooks' 86th-minute goal, while Portugal dropped an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Germany. When Ghana and Germany tied 2-2 on Saturday, the U.S. was suddenly in position to clinch advancement with a win Sunday.
