WORLD CUP: Germany beats Portugal 3-0

Salvador, Brazil (WGR-550) - It was all Germany Monday afternoon, as three first half goals were too much for Portugal to overcome in Group G's opening match.

The German onslaught started in the 12th minute. Thomas Müller drew a penalty inside the penalty area, and sent his penalty kick past Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Twenty minutes later, Tony Kroos sent his corner kick inside the Portuguese box, and Mats Hummels put a beatufiul header in the back of the net. 2-0 Germany.

After the second goal, tensions had begun to flare.  While jockeying for possession, Pepe, Portugal's most decorated defender, threw an elbow that hit Germany's Müller in the face. As Müller was on the ground holding his face, Pepe went back and headbutted Müller. Referee Milorad Mazic gave Pepe a straight red card, ruling out the defender for Sunday's contest against the United States.

Muller added another goal before the two teams headed into the locker room, making it 3-0 Germany, which would end up being the final score.

The United States makes their 2014 World Cup debut this evening, as they take on Ghana at 6:00 PM. Our sister station, AM-1400 will be carrying the broadcast.

What would you think of Dan Bylsma as Sabres head coach?
I'd be very happy. He won a Cup and always made the playoffs.
I wouldn't be happy. His Penguins teams should've won more in the playoffs.
