Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- So what did we learn from the three series that the first team offense played against Detroit, absolutely nothing.
EJ Manuel was no better than he was in any other game and he set up rookie Sammy Watkins to get jacked over the middle and linebacker Ashlee Palmer obliged. Manuel led Watkins too far on a slant and Palmer hit him hard in the midsection reinjuring his ribs. Watkins tried to stay in, but couldn’t and went to the sideline.
Manuel was sacked twice, but quite honestly, looked like he could’ve thrown the ball both times.
Manuel’s first drive started on the Bills 20. His first pass went for 16 yards to Robert Woods and that was his lone highlight of the night. It was a seven play drive and ended in a punt.
The second drive was a three and out and included the bad pass to Watkins that got him hurt and another bad one to Fred Jackson.
The final drive went five plays and featured a 20 yard completion to Woods. The ball went off of Woods and before it hit the ground, one of the Lions dove and knocked the ball up and Woods caught it.
This was another just dreadful performance for Manuel as he went 3-of-7 for 56 yards. C.J. Spiller had two carries for minus three yards.
The offensive line is still missing guard Chris Williams, but the Bills couldn’t run the ball or throw it.
I think the only thing a Bills fan can hold onto right now is that the offense has not done any game planning. Maybe Nate Hackett will devise a plan that will play to Manuel’s strengths.
For me the most alarming part of what I’ve seen the past five weeks is how far off many of Manuel’s passes are.
As I was doing the Bills roundtable during the pregame show, I watched Manuel warmup and it’s the same thing when nobody is covering the receivers. Some passes are there and some are dreadfully behind the receivers.
I wish I had better news for you. The best news is none of this counted. Manuel has played just 10 regular season games in the NFL. I don’t know how he’s going to get his accuracy better, but we get to find out for real a week from Sunday.
