Playing against Buffalo is like sitting in here

What does Buffalo mean?

Let's get the literal answer to today's headline out of the way. Buffalo is from the French "beau fleuve", which means city of old buildings, greasy food and light traffic.

I'm thinking instead about what Buffalo means in sports. I like it when teams have reliable, continual identities; I like it even more when multiple teams in a city share those identities. It's not just something to like, it's a good thing for teams to have.

The Philadelphia Flyers have for the most part been known as a rough, brutish team for four decades. This helps them with their opponents, who can be more easily psyched out; the officials, who will only call so much; and the fans, who will form an opinion about them one way or another. As they say, in show business it's good to be loved or hated, as long as you're not ignored.

The Pittsburgh Penguins charted a new course simply by stealing the Steelers' and Pirates' black-and-gold get-ups. Before that, the Penguins were nothing. Now they're a contributor to a city of champions.

But where is Buffalo in this respect? Do our teams engender any emotions in anyone? Playing the Bills and Sabres largely has been, in a word, painless. This has not always been true but has been true more often than not in my entire life (41 years).

We've had a few runs of greatness (very good-ness?) when playing Buffalo would have been something other than just a game on the schedule. In the mid-1970s facing the Sabres would have put a certain kind of fear in a team, similar to what the 1990s Bills or 2007 Sabres would have done. We'd better be ready. The early-80s Bills and mid-90s Sabres were two of our few teams ever to garner a reputation for physical toughness and ruggedness.

But mostly we're pro sports pushovers. When you play us you may lose but it won't stick with you and it won't hurt. Going to play the Flyers or Bruins or Penguins is a gym workout of the tallest order. Facing Buffalo is sitting in the sauna.

If we ever achieved success in this way, to have our sports teams represent us proudly and properly, how would they do so?

Buffalo has long prided itself on its blue-collar ethos, even though we've become by definition a white-collar city. It's not our hard-working mentality that sets us apart though, or whether we're blue-collar or white-collar, or any other aspect of our collective personality.

What does set us apart is that we're small.

That's the difference between Buffalo and our rivals. Boston, Toronto, New York, Miami, Montreal, Philly -- the cities whose teams we compete with the most often, the most fiercely -- are all major metros. On Wikipedia's "List of North American metropolitan areas by population", they're all in the Top 20. We're #72, right behind Edmonton.

EDMONTON!

Every sports fan knows about the advantages of wealth. The more valuable sports teams are in the major markets. Media plays a monstrous role in sports and is only concerned with major-market teams. Top free-agents think about endorsements and opportunities away from sports, and those opportunities abound in the cities Buffalo faces off with the most often.

Good luck to us, eh?

We need to find a way to turn our relative small-town existence into a positive. Is there a way? I think there is.

We should strive to build relentless, effort-intensive teams that will try for every edge. We should aim to stand out as a city on the big boys' schedule that they dread -- not because the hotels aren't as nice as theirs but because playing Buffalo should be hell. If they think our city is rough, our teams should fall in line and be rough on them.

This mentality should be how the Bills and Sabres build identities -- ones they've lacked for the better part of their existences.

We're still trying to beat the big markets at their own game. Terry Pegula showed up in February 2011 and promised the moon. Free agency came and likewise we aimed for the biggest animal, Brad Richards. What we learned was that the Buffalo Sabres being willing to spend is only part of it. If Richards wanted Broadway, all the Terry Pegulas in the world still give us no chance.

I wrote last summer how our area's spaciousness and outdoor living helped the Bills land Mario Williams. I still think this can be a recruiting key for them. Williams, Kyle Williams, C.J. Spiller, Eric Wood, Stephon Gilmore -- they all have roots in the Southeast and here they feel they get a taste of home. Not everybody wants Gotham.

But we need to recognize that we can't be Broadway. So let's instead be Farmville. Or, the back alley. It can work.

It's still sports. It's still about effort and emotion and passion, and at the very, very least our teams should be the gold standards in these areas. We should become a place where big-city teams can be outfought and outwitted. It should be our trademark. If it doesn't get us championships then it doesn't. But it should make us better than we are. And best of all it should make us proud.

We won't have major league sports one decade from now
Bills will be in Toronto once Wilson kicks it. His "regionalization" will flourish there thus team value will be higher across the border. Sabres will be somewhere else once T-Pegs decides he's had enough of the harsh (but 100% accurate) criticism of what little fan base is left of his team. In the meantime, the city will look to scrounge for increased benefits in welfare programs and put up more retail buildings to the likes of Bass Pro with high hopes that will turn things around. Why? We give fools like Fitzpatrick 3 years of $MM before we realize, hey! he can't throw a ball on mark. Darcy Regeir fires a long tenured coach to give fans hope of new things to come - but quickly flips back to his style of making the most conservative move possible in the selection of Ron Rolston. Maybe Rolston's a good coach, but that's not why Darcy selected him.

Great Read
I am not certain what Buffalo "means"-but I am certain that this column should be a must read for the Bills/Sabres.

Need straight talking people
Both teams need straight talking people making the personnel decisions. Buffalo is a plain spoken city. More than enough residents of WNY "tell it like it is". It's the hallmark of places like Cheektowaga and South Buffalo. Problem is there are soft spoken, wimpy sounding, wimpy in how they do business people like Darcy Regier making the personnel decisions and being the spokesperson for the team. That is the first thing that really needs to change. No more Regiers, Jaurons, Gaileys that have personalities that go against those of Cheektowaga and South Buffalo (just using these communities as 2 exmaples of traditional blue collar WNY). I think Doug Marrone being hired as the Bills head coach is a step in that direction. Marrone is plain spoken, from the Bronx, spent most of his adult life 2.5 hrs east of here in Syracuse. Colloquially speaking he is "one of us." At the very least the Bills have that going for them, which is more than can be said of the Sabres at this point. I think that a different GM for the Sabres...be it Brian Burke, Rick Dudley...whomever would certainly invoke more a sense of personal identity with the community than the meek speaking, wimpy looking, defeated Darcy Regier. That would be a good first step for the Sabres in terms of changing their identity and demeanor. Hopefully it's change that is in the works very soon.

Nice thought but......
Don't forget Edmonton has a few stanly cup banners hanging in their arena. If they are a similar size, why can't we have similar success?
03/13/2013 1:48PM
Farmville?
I liked the article for the most part but, and this is definitely putting my personal preferences into it, we don't have to relegate ourselves to Farmville. Just like we can decide to have an effort intensive identity for our personality, we can choose our cultural feel identity as well. Just because we aren't NYC doesn't mean we have to go the completely opposite direction for the heck of it. We could choose to be like a big city if that's what we wanted and try our hardest to make it work, and if it doesn't, be proud. It makes most sense to me, and is also my preference, that we could choose to be what we are: a small city on the rise (or at least could be on the rise). That has an appeal to certain people just like NYC or Farmville can, see yours truly.

I didnt even read your artical. Just wanted to say you are the worst. You are not likeable and might be the most unprofessional radio host I have ever heard. And that is saying alot considering the whole WGR crew consists of slobs like howard Simon and Paul Hamilton.

Buffalo Is A Gem
I grew up in the Buffalo area in the '70's and '80's and have lived in various large cities since. Though Buffalo's growth has been slow it offers far better regional flavors and experiences than most larger cities. The Atlantas and Phoenixs of the nation are monstrosities of endless strip malls and chains that offer cheaply made products and lousy food with long commutes. Buffalo has been able to hang on to some small or family run businesses (though it is changing) which give it character. Unfortunately "progress" has become increased multinational corporate influence, and consequently, the homogenization of our culture; profit does not equate to quality (Adam Smith may be rolling in his grave). Put another way, the Buffalo bashers don't know a good thing is in front of them As for the gloom and doom future: there may be no Bills but the Sabres are going nowhere. And yes, let's hope we get a Bill Polian type GM for the Sabres and win a Cup. Also, as climate change kicks in, Buffalo's milder winters and access to fresh water will become attractive to those burning up in Phoenix or Vegas and to those on the East Coast getting hammered by more frequent Sandy type storms. Go Buffalo!!

Talking Proud - That was the problem
Pride comes before a fall. I remember when that saying came out. I remember that I was in Canada looking at Buffalo across the river and a pastor friend of mine said, this is going to be the ruin of Buffalo as a city. I laughed it off, but in 1 decade the city would be humbled and brought to knees asking what happened. and it has been a downward spiral every since. Want this city to become relevant again? Start talking humble, get rid of the seedy shops/cinemas and rid this city of the drugs. Then you'll start to see change.

Unbelievable - Spot On
I have been a loyal sabres fan since 1971 and a sometimes bills fan since then....Dear Mssrs. Brandon, Pegula, Brandon, Let's get some more players in here, who have a chip on their shoulders (to go along with some talent) that have something to prove in here. So that we can roll up the doormats and make our opponents fear having to come here to play. Fear is difficult to create in this day and age of overpaid spoiled athletes, but if it can be pulled off while incorporating statistical analytics to make more educated decisionmaking, it will pay dividends. Afterall it is much less stressful on the fans than having to watch embarrasing half-hearted player efforts, such as was seen with the sabres players game after game before their family came along on that trip to Fla or some of those bills defensive players who shied away from tackling Marshawn Lynch in TO. Shame on them. Clearly Mr. Regier has had an ample opportunity to do that over the last 15 years and has not built teams in that overall persona. His team is again failing miserably this season and continues to have a "mousy" persona. He selects the players in drafts, free agency, and trades. The writing is on the wall: although the scoreboard read 3-2 in philly, our undersize guys were clearly whipped in that game. We have too many undersized players and those beatdowns will be the rule not the exception if a team of this overall physical stature makes the playoffs. Too many cats and not enough dogs. Isn't it time for a change? Afterall, its now 42 years and counting without a cup (and even longer without a football champion). What is the risk...how can it be any worse? Until then you will continue to hear the catcalls at the arena continue to grow: "Darcy must go." and "42 years." With that said, Mr. Shopp, well written article. Unfortunately I and several others I know who listen often find you to be too abrasive/snarky/sarcastic (you can pick the word)and patronizing for our tastes. Almost like Darcy or Buddy. Its a shame because we see potential thats just not manifesting itself as a good on air product often enough.

Spoken like a true hommer from Chris Bulldog
Bulldog makes a lot of very good points about how irrelevant the city of Buffalo has been in the sports world for a long time. I was born and raised in Buffalo, grew up on the west side not far from the Peace bridge. I left Buffalo in 1994 for warmer sunny Florida. I left Buffalo because I felt my life was going no where and the opportunity for a good life there were slim to none. I've lived, worked and made a very good life for myself in Florida. I've advised all my family and friends who still live there to move away, move anywhere but Buffalo New York. I gave up on the Bills after the music city debacle and consider myself divorced from that team. I've adopted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as my NFL team. But I will never let the Sabres go. I feel horrible for all the long suffering Buffalo sports fans and want very much for the Sabres to win a cup. Bulldog wrote a very honest and truthful column from the heart and that can never be wrong. Thanks Chris!

Attitude
Through the early 90s the Bills were talented but did not have enough grit to win it all. Since then they continue to bring in has beens and players with no heart or leadership (Williams, Fitzy, Merriman recent history). The Bills will always suffer this fate because that is what is going to come here, lets resign ourselves to that fate. The Sabres on the other hand could compete but what Pegula needs to do is look at past history and understand the NHL game in order to be successful. Through the mid to late 90s the Sabres were building a tough, physical team with enough talent to win and they were a beast to play against. THEN THE DUNCY AND NOTSORUFF era began. That philosophy was scrapped for small players with skills BUT NO HEART, LEADERSHIP AND GRIT. Look at the team we have ended up with. Vanek - Plays hard when he wants to, no leadership skills, very little heart and grit in big meaningful games, stick a body on him and he disappears Hodgson, Ennis, Gerbe - talented, small to the point where any grit they have is like a pesky nat. I'm sorry, against the bigger, physical teams these guys are not difference makers, they cannot bang in the boards to make enough difference Stafford - Joke of a player, should have been shipped out west a long time ago. No heart, no grit Flynn - Another small guy that will show signs of life at times but will end up being a disappointment Foligno, Scott, Kaleta, Porter, Regheir - Will bang and bring the grit every night Hecht - Really?? Joke, plays half speed most of the time Meyers - A big pansie. He is so afraid to get hit that he turns the puck over continuously The rest of the team, soft and not worth mentioning Basically this is the mess that Duncy and NotsoRuff have created over 16 years of failed vision. A team with marginal talent and very little heart. There are flashes of brilliance at times but these two stooges have given Buffalo 16 years of a failed philosophy. One of them is gone (Thank God), the other needs to go but more importantly, the philosophy has to change, strong, physical, and marginally talented with lots of heart and passion, that is the attributes that need to be emphasized. Duncy thought he could bring in top tier talent and win on that, he disregarded heart and passion and that's where he failed but like Schopp said, until you commit to changing the philosophy, nothing will change!!!

I do love it, but its over.. At least what it once was over. I'd like to be positive about what it will be, but overall the rust belt is done.... Milwaukee, Gary, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown... All those cities are just done... Unless global warming does kick in - its over for these places.

Instead of beating around the bush, why don't you just call the city you live in and all of its inhabitants a bunch of losers?

Hey Sabres fan in Florida... Umm...Mike Schopp wrote this article. Are all Florida residents as clueless as you? Apparently moving to Florida wasn't good for your brain development, you are just as retarded as ever, I guess.

Lexicography, anyone?
I know WGR is no think tank or bastion of literacy, but "buffalo" also means "to baffle" or "to bewilder." Just to keep the record straight.

WestWardHo
The Sabres should move here, to San Diego. We love hockey too. Don't whine about your Bills...we have the Chargers..nuff said!
03/15/2013 10:29PM
Watch your language!
I know WGR is no think tank or bastion of literacy, but as my late friend John Otto would have been pleased to tell you, Buffalo also means "to baffle" or "bewilder." For a kid from Toronto in the 60's, it also mean Syros, Johnny Endicott's Bar and Grill, the Governor's Inn, and above all, George Lorenz, "the Hound!" Ah, well, so much for nostalgia. As for the English lesson, consider yourself well served. You desperately need it, Chris, and even more so, Schopp.

It isn't over! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? No! Who's with me????? BUFFFFALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! C'mon Debbie-Downers. We are 2 GM's and 1 Headcoach away from turning this thing around. PFFFFFT!

Havoc
As a VCU alumn, the Sabres/Bills need to create HAVOC, the way Shaka Smart has done at VCU. They're not the biggest team or the most talented, but they make it a nightmare for other teams to play against. It's time for Buffalo teams to startcreating some havoc of their own. Go Sabres and Rams!
03/19/2013 4:32AM
Schopp Is Pure Talk Radio Genius
One day he can be saying how he wishes buffalo and its sports teams acted and were treated like other cities and teams. That the fans should be outraged that their owners and general managers don't play the game like other teams do. And the fans should be angry at being so disrespected in the sports world and demand change. The next day he says the city of buffalo and fans living in buffalo should pump up their chest with pride. And stop wishing they were like other cities and sports teams and say, we have it all here and you wish you were us....When it comes to getting a reaction from listeners, Schopp has all the bases covered.
