After leaving with twisted ankle, Watkins returns to Bills practice

The wide receiver says he's fine

The Bills began another round of practices at St. John Fisher Sunday afternoon.  Here are some notes and observations:

— The big news of the day was wide receiver Sammy Watkins leaving the field after what he said was “overextending” his curl route during the individual position portion of practice.  Watkins walked right over to his position coach, Phil McGeoghan, who stood near him for a few seconds, then head trainer Bud Carpenter and another trainer came to talk with Watkins.  He walked off the field directly to the trainers’ tent with Carpenter where he then had his left foot re-taped.  The wideout returned to the field a short time later, ran some pass routes on his own, away from the offense, then joined the rest of the team but did not take any reps in initial 11-on-11 work.  Later in practice, Watkins was back on the field in all situations as he usually is.  After practice, he told the media, “my foot is fine…I actually got to go back out there and test it out and found out it was a little ankle twist.  Ran a route, caught the ball, felt good about it.”  Watkins also said he asked to run some plays to test it out after trainers weren’t initially going to let him.  “Once I caught the ball and ran another route, I was like, ‘I’m fine,’ it’s no problem,” he said.  Watkins says he will ice his ankle tonight and be ready to practice tomorrow.

Here’s a look at the play Watkins twisted his ankle.  He also still made a one-handed catch:

— Participation update:

  • DE Ryan Davis did not practice due to a concussion suffered at Friday evening’s practice
  • TE Keith Towbridge did not practice due to foot soreness. He was seen in a walking boot and on crutches prior to practice.
  • S Micah Hyde (hip) and DE Shaq Lawson (groin) were both limited.

— Cordy Glenn (ankle) was a full participant.  He took every rep I saw as the starting left tackle.

— Running back Jonathan Williams looks like he gets more comfortable and better each day to me.  He had several nice runs today, a couple of which included making defenders miss in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage.

— DE Eddie Yarbrough started in place of Lawson, with Davis also out.  And he had a other really good day.  He does something good on a daily basis that gets him noticed.

— When Watkins was out, Brandon Tate took his spot with the first team offense, joining Andre Holmes and Zay Jones.

— Rod Streater made a couple fine catches once again as he continues to impress.

— Safety Jordan Poyer had a nice interception of a Tyrod Taylor pass.  Taylor was trying to hit a receiver running down the numbers and threw it too far inside with a little too much air.  Poyer undercut it.

— Gerald Hodges continued to take some snaps as the MLB, along with his normal WLB spot.  Preston Brown once again was the No. 1 MLB, with Reggie Ragland getting the bulk of the second-team work.

— Former NFL wide receiver and current NFL Network analyst Steve Smith was on-hand for practice and talked with all the wideouts, who gathered around him at the conclusion of the session:

The team will be back on the practice field Monday and Tuesday at 8:45 AM.
