The Buffalo Bills got back to practice at St. John Fisher College just two days after trading away wide receiver Sammy Watkins and cornerback Ronald Darby in separate deals. Here are some notes of what happened at practice, as well as video of new wide receiver, Jordan Matthews:

— The big story of practice, outside of seeing Matthews and CB E.J. Gaines (acquired in one of the deals) for the first time was that rookie Nathan Peterman was the No. 2 quarterback and T.J. Yates dropped to the third team. Peterman clearly outplayed Yates in the team’s first preseason game last Thursday night, but that was against primarily third-team defenders. So now, it appears he will get a shot at not only the Bills’ second string defense, but very likely the Philadelphia Eagles’ second unit, as well, this coming Thursday.

— Not only did Peterman take No. 2 quarterback reps, he also had a very good practice. He made good decisions and mostly good throws, even threading the needle to Corey "Philly" Brown on a deep out right at the sidelines, just before the defender could get there. That’s a throw Peterman hasn’t connected on enough of throughout OTAs, minicamp, and this training camp. Hopefully he continues to be able to do that. He also led the second offense to a TD on a 2-minute drill, taking what the defense gave him, for the most part, but hitting Brandon Tate on a 22-yard TD strike for the score.

— Brandon Tate had the play of the day when he made a spectacular one-handed catch in the back of the end zone on a Hail Mary pass from Peterman. Here’s the video:

— Gerald Hodges continued to be the No. 2 MLB behind Preston Brown, with Reggie Ragland on the third team.

— Participation update:

  • WR Jeremy Butler (concussion protocol) did not practice.
  • OT Cordy Glenn (foot) did not practice.
  • S Bacarri Rambo (hamstring) did not practice.
  • OT Michael Ola (toe) did not practice.
  • CB Kevon Seymour (foot) did not practice.
  • S Colt Anderson was taken off PUP and practiced.
  • WR Jordan Matthews was under evaluation for a chest injury after practice.

— With Kevon Seymour out and E.J. Gaines just getting to Buffalo and not knowing the defensive system, Shareece Wright started at CB opposite Tre'Davious White.

— WR Jordan Matthews took both first and second team reps. When he was with the first team, he generally took the spot of Andre Holmes.

— In 3 WR sets on the first offense, it was Zay Jones and Jordan Matthews outside with Anquan Boldin in the slot.

— WR Rod Streater getting some snaps with the first offense in the 2-minute offense.

— New Bills’ jersey numbers:

  • WR Jordan Matthews 87
  • CB E.J. Gaines 28
  • CB Jumal Rolle 38
  • WR Brandon Reilly 89 (was 87)
