Linus Ullmark made 28 saves for the Buffalo Sabres, but it was not enough as Pekka Rinne earned the shutout in the Nashville Predators' 4-0 win on Monday night at KeyBank Center.

Here's how the game unfolded:

First Period:

18:10 - Both teams have had great scoring chances in the first two minutes of the game. Nashville had a scoring chance right off the hop, and the blue and gold went the other way and nearly recorded the game's first goal.

13:12 - Buffalo has been the faster, quicker team not only on the ice but with the puck, and it results in the game's first penalty. Where has this team been all year?! Mattias Ekholm heads to the penalty box for hooking.

10:31 - The Sabres' best scoring chance came on the opening seconds of the man advantage when Kyle Okposo put the puck to the front of the net and the team had a chance on Pekka Rinne point blank. Instead, the chance was blocked and the puck went the other way. Buffalo failed to establish possession and drive to the net the rest of the power play.

3:56 - What an entertaining period thus far, with action at both ends of the ice and neither team retreating into a defensive shell. Even though the score is still 0-0, I do not feel like we are being cheated.

End of Period

Goal Summary:

BUF: NONE
NSH: NONE

Penalty Summary:

BUF: NONE
NSH: 7:02 - Mattias Ekholm (2 min., hooking)

Shots on Goal:

BUF - 13, NSH - 10

Second Period:

15:04 - Justin Bailey is one of the players that has been using his speed to his advantage tonight, helping Buffalo not only keep up with the Predators, but at times out-hustle their opponent. The forward nearly had a breakaway attempt early in this period, but the puck was just too far from his reach and speed.

9:35 - Rinne has had to be very good with his glove hand, even moreso when Jack Eichel unleashes a ripper from the face-off dot. Still scoreless midway through the game.

7:31 - PREDATORS GOAL. Nashville gets a double-deflection on a shot from the point, and Mike Fisher looks like the last one to touch the puck to re-direct it into the net. The play ware challenged for goaltender interference, but there was little to no contact and it had no impact on the play. 1-0 NSH.

2:57 - PREDATORS GOAL. Linus Ullmark made the initial save, but Ryan Johansen was there in the slot to collect the rebound and slide the puck into an open net. The lead is doubled by the visitors, but I feel like the Sabres are playing as well as they ever have this season. 2-0 NSH

End of Period

Goal Summary:

BUF: NONE

Shots on Goal:

BUF - 14 (27), NSH - 11 (21)

Third Period:

14:05 - This game has fallen into the trap of so many others this season. The visitors are now content with running the time off of the clock, now that the Sabres have failed to convert on their early power play chance this frame. It was a carryover from the second period, and yielded little to no offense.

12:51 - The Sabres have yet another close call thanks to simply getting the puck to the net, but they still trail by a pair. They will need to get a goal soon, I think, to have a real chance at the comeback against a Nashville team that can turn it on seemingly at the drop of a hat.

5:36 - The one thing I cannot say this frame is that Buffalo has not had their chances. Rinne has given up a few uncharacteristically big rebounds and opportunities for the blue and gold to halve the deficit. Instead, it is still 2-0 Nashville with just minutes to go.

3:46 - PREDATORS GOAL. This is the goal that sends everyone to the exits, as now the Sabres have a three goal deficit to come back from with less than four minutes to go in regulation. 3-0 NSH.

:23.6 - PREDATORS GOAL. A fluky bounce gets away from Linus Ullmark, and the game is definitely now over. 4-0 NSH.
