In search of their first win of the 2017-18 season, the Buffalo Sabres come up empty in a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday from SAP Center in San Jose. Forward Jason Pominville scored twice in the first game of a four game west coast road trip. Jack Eichel and Zemgus Girgensons both chipped in on Pominville's goals, registering assists on both chances. Robin Lehner made 23 saves on 26 shots faced, but it was not enough to help the Sabres in the loss.

An early power play goal from Tomas Hertl led to the Sharks taking a quick 1-0 lead over Buffalo. Marco Scandella took a slashing penalty just 36 seconds into the game, and San Jose would make Buffalo pay with Hertl's first goal of the season. The Sabres would respond thanks to nice passing from Zemgus Girgensons and Jack Eichel got the puck to Jason Pominville for Pominville's third of the season to tie the game at 1. Girgensons used his speed to get past the defense and drop a pass to Eichel, who quickly dished it to Pominville. The Sharks re-gained the lead on a goal from Chris Tierney on a great pass from Joonas Donskoi. Donskoi was behind the net and fed the pass to Tierney crashing the net, putting the Sharks up 2-1.

In the second period, Pominville scored his second of the night on another impressive pass from Eichel, tying the game at 2. Buffalo had a 47-second two-man advantage, but the Sharks would kill both penalties off, and then take the lead again, 3-2, thanks to Timo Meier's first of the season.

The third period saw only one penalty, an interference call to Scandella that Buffalo killed with relative ease. However, the Sabres could not score in the third period to tie the game and remain the only winless team in the Eastern Conference.
