If EJ were in this year's draft, where would Whaley rank him?

Everyone needs a great one and so few NFL franchises have one of that caliber. That's why it was a bit of an anomaly in 2013 when the Buffalo Bills were the lone team to take a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft.
The general consensus was that it wasn't the year to need a quarterback, and almost every team held off. Those that waited, in the opinion of many, will be much better rewarded based on the prospects of the top signal callers available in 2014.
Since the Bills were the lone franchise to buck the trend of the popular opinion in 2013, where would their franchise quarterback rate in this year's crop?
That seemed like a good question for the guy that had a hand in drafting him, Buffalo general manager Doug Whaley.
"Oooh. Good question," Whaley said, caught perhaps a tad off-guard while expecting the normal combine banter with the media. "I would have to say he would be talked in the top tier of those guys. Just with his size and athletic ability, you looked at the measurements now, there was only one guy close to his size and that was Blake Bortles at 6-5, and AJ McCarron was over the 6-3, so he's in there. I'm a big proponent that everything equal, you go with the bigger guy."
So there you have it, Bills fans. In the opinion of Whaley, Manuel would be with the top crew of Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater and even perhaps Derek Carr.
Save this quote just in case. If Manuel doesn't end up panning out for the Bills and the GM is forced to draft another quarterback to get over the hump, his final sentence in that quote should be remembered. In Whaley's world, the tie goes to the big guy.
What is Whaley expecting from Manuel in his second go-round?
"I want to see some progression just with his being comfortable in the system and I think you're gonna get that because now he knows what to expect. He knows what to expect in this off-season, he knows what to expect in camp, he knows what to expect in the regular season," the GM replied, before coming out with an intriguing sentence. "And with what coach put around him with the quarterback coach and the offensive assistant, we're giving him every resource to do what he has to do to take that next step to get us where we need to go."
All quotes are open to many different ways of interpretation, and perhaps the effort to give him "every resource" to succeed is essentially saying "we've gotta see something from you this year, kid." Or, maybe it's just a sentence in an answer. Either way, the progress of Manuel will be fascinating and it will not be impeded by a player at his same position in regards to the ninth overall pick.
Whaley said they can do just about anything with the ninth overall selection.
"With the way our roster's set up right now, besides quarterback, we could go with any position," he remarked.
If you were holding on to the slim hope that the Bills would take a signal caller with their first round pick, you can officially saddle up for another year of EJ.
If EJ were in this year's draft, where would Whaley rank him?

KneeJ is a 4th to 6th round this and last year. Just because the Bills reached to take him doesn't make him a 1st rounder.
EJ a Buddy surprise
Joe, I believe you said last year based on what Buddy said about EJ after combine there was no way they'd draft him.
The 1 thing you cannot teach a QB is pocket presence and EJ did not show anything resembling it last year which will cause him frequent injury. He creates pressure that is not there and does not see it when it is. You heard it here first...
where I would rank EJ
I Would Rank Ej Right Where He Fell. Would He Still Be A First Round Qb ? Absolutely. Would He Go First, Who Knows. Would I Take Him Over Johnny, Absolutely. There Is A Lot That Goes Into The Draft Process That I Don't Know, But He's Still Right In The Top Tier Conversation. I Think Whaley Answered Well. Did You Also See Buckys Mock ? Sammy Falling To The Lions, Head Scratcher. Can't Wait To Read Your Thoughts On All These Guys Joe. Keep It Up
He will be way better this year
LAGARRETTE BLOUNT SAYS...
It doesn't matter... WE LOVE THE BILLS!!! 6 AND 10 AGAIN! GO RUSS!
Shows how smart Whaley is. Whaley is part of the problem with this team - along with Brandon and Marrone. Just because he is big -that makes him a good QB? BS! Didnt these guys watch Manuel play last year? At least bring somebody in to compete with him. Thats common sense. Its gonna be another long season for Bills fans.
It's unfortunate that the Bills won't be drafting another QB in the first round. I would love to know their rationale. I certainly hope the Bills haven't fallen victim to the sunk cost fallacy.
Also, all else equal you go with the bigger guy? Well I hope this doesn't exclude the Bills from ever getting the next Russell Wilson.
Message board GMs
Love to hear Whaley speak his mind on the issue. Small QBs have a harder time in the NFL. I understand where he is coming from. Too many have already said Whaley or fill in the blank is what is wrong with the Bills. EJ was a reach/over rated/5th rounded etc. Wonder why these guys are not employed by an NFL team for their expertise and insight. Geez
He said "everything equal", not "take the bigger guy no matter what."
call up Losman
Revive this franchise NOW before it's too late
None of this matters. EJ's accuracy was horrible last year. It was the biggest mark against him before the draft and I can see why. If that doesn't improve next year he will be a bust.
EJ will get the job done.
I don't care what qb come out this year. If they don't have a line to protect him or the right coaches to coach him. He going to be getting off his back like ej was doing lasted year. He is going to have to learn that system. He's going to have his ups and downs. Every rookie dose. And the buffalo bills says, that lagarrette blount can go to hell with that nosie. One thing is for sure the bills are going to get their holes filled. And its just like whaley said can you imagine the talent that won't be drafted. And will be invited to camp; that going to be great. That means the special teams is to get a flush of new players. Something we need. That also means that they will finally will have depth on the team. Which is also great. But all this would not mean nothing if they didn't have coaches to teach them. And oh boy the bills have coaches now. everybody is worring about crossman. these coaches that they have also know the special teams part too. Its going to be fun to watch in training camp. Because the players who didn't get drafted will be on the team. So that means that almost every coach on our team have two or three players out of this draft. that they feel can be a pro in this league. And thats how you get the players you want for this team. Remember their is no more college coaches on our team beside moore. and you see how the players love him.
Let's hold off on judging EJ for now.
Unfortunately EJ had the injury bug last year. I think you have to keep him this season as your #1 hope he stays on the field and then start to objectively judge his performance. Last year was not a good year to make final judgment on.
When EJ was at his best; he was only average. I saw very little to really say he earned the starting position for this year.
We better hope that
Whaley and Marrone are right because if they aren't next year or the year after they will be gone and we start all over again.
The Bills have not addressed this position in years & it shows! There is a lot of talent in 2014 draft,I just hope that they draft someone in 3rd or 4th round that they can develop along with EJ.If a guy like Murray,Mettenberger or McCarron is there,DRAFT HIM!!!!
This guy is CLUELESS
The Bills PR machine has been pushing this guy as a genius, and it's now clear it's just another examples of why the Bills have been pathetic for so long. To completely exclude the possibility of drafting a QB, the most important position in football, especially when you haven't had any production from the position in over a decade, and the guy you are currently going with was below average in production last year AND was injury prone, is proof that this GM doesn't understand what it takes to build a winning football team in today's NFL. I'm fine with going with manuel to start the year - but what if he continues to play poorly? What if he gets injured again? A good GM considers these possibilities and prepares for them. A good GM would draft the best QB available and begin grooming him in case the previously mentioned possibilities occur. A bad GM deals with those possibilities by sticking with what he had last year, tuel and lewis, both of whom played below average QB, which is why the Bills lost 10 games.
Can he honestly say he made a mistake now? come on Joe. dumb question. he had no choice but to answer the way he did. I'm sure he's kicking himself...especially after seeing how injury prone EJ is.
Give him time
Based on most commenters here it looks like the Redskins need a new QB too seeing how horrible RG3 was despite being offensive rookie of the year the year before. This is the NFL people and rookies struggle despite recent rookie success. I'm not saying EJ is the guy but you can't waste another 1st round pick on a QB this year. Now if he has similar struggles this year then I'll listen next year. Build this team in other areas and lets see what the kid can do.
I love the "Knee-J" moniker!! I was thinking he goes to "Dr. Falloff?" They've gotta draft a real QB. This guy don't make the cut. Still.
I think if you are taken in the first round it makes you a first rounder ;)
What kind of a rookie season would EJ have had to produce in order to keep fans from saying he's a bust? Russell Wilson numbers? Way better team around him. Nick Foles numbers? Again, better supporting cast. He was a rookie QB on a team with very young receivers, very average TE, and sporadic running game. Add to that a defense that due to its issues placed the offense in catchup mode and a special team that didn't shorten the field, and you have the kind of season EJ had. Impossible to decide if he's going to be good, great, or awful with his body of work.
knee j bills no 1
ej is not smart enough to be an nfl qb! bills had to shorten there play book. hes injury prone also. please Brandon wake up and draft a real qb.
We need to see what we have in EJ first before we go drafting another QB inthe first round. I think EJ should he can at least be a good game manager like an ALex smith type. He still has some things to work on but they knew he had a lot of upside but needed work and it is a good thing they are giving him extrax caoches to help him progress and maybe they should have did that last year. Whaley said all things being equal they we go after a bigger QB and I don't see a problem with that, because if a smaller QB was better they would go after him. I think that is common sense as well. I dont think Whaley , Russ or Marrone are problems with this team, I actually think they are the best that te Bills have had in a long time. I just think there is a lot of work to get back to the top and I think they you can't get there overnight when you have been bad for so long, but I think the team is headed inthe right direction with the current leadership. I think we have better players and better coaches now and we just have to put it all together now and I think we will in 2014 or 2015 and make the playoffs.
Buffalo will never get out of last place in the AFC East. At least not until they get new management and new ownership. What is it now -14 years of NO playoffs? Whaley's comments show what is wrong with this team. Last year he reached and drafted a 4th round talent in the 1st round (EJ Manuel). So this year he is not gonna draft a QB because he has his "franchise"? EJ Manuel has not proven that he is better than Thad Lewis.
Until the Bills get someone who is smarter than Belichick and a QB as good as Brady they will go nowhere.
Your an idiot
until ej plays on road the way he plays at home im not convinced.also, starts way too slow we need sixty minute qb
ALL YOU EJ
Cant wait to watch EJ shove it down the throats of all you know nothing EJ bashers. His o-line was below average at best. His receiving core was very inexperienced. And his coordinator was in his first year. Dont know many rookie QBs who could thrive in that environment. Expect the Bills to add an offensive tackle, guard, and receiver to help him out. All you EJ bashers do yourself a favor. Look at Jim Kellys stats his first four years. Very unimpressive. He didnt start to really play well till Reed, Thomas, Lofton, and the o-line developed. EJ needs the same type of talent. Give him some better talent and hell be a far better QB.
A.J. A.J. A.J. A.J. A.J. A.J.
Did anyone expect a different answer?
Marv Levy has yet to concede that his decision to make Jauron the head coach was a horrible one, although everyone else can see that it clearly was.
Similarly do we really expect any intellectual honesty from Whaley when it comes to his pet QB project? And actually, I thought it was Buddy Nix who was really responsible for the ultimate decision, not Whaley. As I recall, they had training wheels on Whaley as he was getting On The Job training to assume the post of GM because he wasn't qualified to handle the job at that time.
When lost, come here for direction.
Whaley reminds me of Donohoe. And we all know what Donohoe did to the Bills. They both came from Pittsburgh. This is why the Bills always finish last in the AFC East. Poor personel -from top to bottom. The front office, the coaches and the scouting dept. They could learn by looking at New England. Buffalo Wall-Of-Famer Bill Polian, who built the Super Bowl Bills, is out there without a job in football. So why would you want Whaley? But Ralph Wilson is too dumb or senile to hire Polian.
Re: knee j bills no 1
It is funny that you say EJ is not smart enough when you did not even use the word "there" correctly; you should have used "their."
Apparently Whaley didnt learn from Nix. Nix was good at blowing smoke. You dont give away what you're gonna do in the draft. NFL GMs dont tell people who -or what position that they're gonna take in the draft. Even if Whaley is actually speaking his mind, whats wrong with taking a QB? If EJM continues to play like he did against Pittsburgh and Tampa last year -or if his knees give out again Whaley will look like a dunce. Why not bring in another QB to compete? Lewis is only average at best. And Tuel -who knows? Kolb is probably finished in the NFL. Its another 6-10 or 5-11 season for the Bills. They have a defense -but NO offense!
"...we could go with any position," he remarked.
I kinda doubt they'll be drafting D Line or Running Back either
Another losing season in 2014
The Bills will be losers again in 2014 and probably for many years after that. Years and years of poor decisions by management have ruined this franchise. I've followed them since I was a kid in 1960 and there's been far more bad times than good times with this team.
