The Buffalo Sabres have kept their 12th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, and with that pick, they have selected Mikhail Grigorenko of the Quebec Ramparts in the QMJHL.

Here is Craig Button's analysis of Grigorenko:
Mikhail possesses a unique blend of skill and size. He's an excellent skater with a long stride who seemingly just moves past defenders with ease. He carries the puck very well and because he can change gears in stride, it makes him very difficult to deter. A very good passer who makes plays on the move and is able to do it in traffic. He has good sense and vision and sees the potential for offensive opportunities and he creates chances. His shot is good but not threatening at this time but he shows a willingness to make this more of a weapon for himself. Because of his size and wing span, he is extremely effective defensively and he's able to force opponents away from dangerous areas and he is also able to fend off checkers when he's in offensive situations. He plays the game both ways and while he's not a physical presence, he is a player who creates challenges for opponents because of the skill and his size which he knows how to utilize to gain advantages. He possesses qualities and a potential that realized could make him a star.

Grigorenko performed exceptionally well last season with the Ramparts, netting 40 goals, and scoring 85 points in 59 games.  Grigorenko was slated to go in the top 3 picks until the QMJHL playoffs, where the play of Grigorenko fell off, at least for his standards, scoring only 10 points in 11 playoff games. 
There have been rumors surrounding Grigorenko saying he'd be heading to the KHL, but he says that it's the Buffalo Sabres that he plays for now.

"I can say now the Buffalo Sabres are my team," Grigorenko said.  "I can't wait to go on the ice and wear this jersey."

For a while, Grigorenko was rated as a top 5 prospect.  Upon being taken at the 12th overall spot, Grigorenko believes that regardless of draft position, he's ready for the big time.

"I have a few months to work, and I'll improve my weaknesses.  I think I'll be ready to play in the NHL next year."
