Ray Whitney Signs 2-Year Deal with Dallas Stars

After spending his past two seasons in Phoenix, Ray Whitney hit the open market today at the ripe age of 40.  Now, he'll be playing with the Dallas Stars until he is 42.

Whitney has signed a 2-year deal with the Stars that TSN's Aaron Ward reports is worth $9 million, breaking down to $4 million in base salary and $50,000 in bonuses per season.

In the twilight of his career, Whitney is still a prolific scorer.  He had 24 goals and 77 points in 82 games this past season.  He had 7 points in 16 games in the playoffs.

Under the current CBA, the Stars can't escape Whitney's $4.5 million cap hit if he retires next season.  Contracts signed by players over the age of 35 stay on a team's cap unless that player is injured, and must be placed on long-term injured reserve.
