NHL Free Agency Update: Waiting on Doan

We are now 13 days into NHL free agency, and some important signings have been recently completed.

Finnish winger, Teemu Selanne decided to return for a twentieth NHL season after signing a one year, $4.5 million deal to remain with the Anaheim Ducks. Selanne, a former Stanley Cup champion with the Ducks netted 26 goals along with 40 assists last season. He turned 42 ten days ago.

Also, the Colorado Avalanche avoided arbitration with Jamie McGinn after signing the 23 year old forward to a $3.5 million contract, over two years. McGinn started last season with the San Jose Sharks, but was traded over to Colorado for forwards Daniel Winnik and T.J. Galiardi and a seventh round draft pick in late February. McGinn was an immediate offensive impact for the Avalanche, earning 13 points in just 17 games. With both the Avalanche and the Sharks, McGinn accumulated 20 goals and 17 assists.

While many of the top NHL free agents have signed deals, there are still several players available that could provide quality service to any team in the league.

Some notable offensive players that remain on the market are Alexander Semin, Shane Doan, Andre Kostitsyn, and Brian Rolston. As for defensemen, Scott Hannahan as well as former Buffalo Sabre, Jaroslav Spacek have yet to reach an agreement with a team. The selection of free agent goalies is limited, but recently another former Sabre, Dominik Hasek has expressed an interest to return to the NHL again. Hasek, 47, has not played a game in the NHL since 2008.
