Bills' Fitzpatrick reminds Polian of Reich

Bills fans would love to see Ryan Fitzpatrick turn into Jim Kelly this season but there was another former Bills signal caller that came to Bill Polian's mind when the former General Manager spoke to WGR on Wednesday.

While saying he always believed Fitzpatrick could win in the NFL, the architect of the Bills four Super Bowl teams said Fitzpatrick reminds him of Kelly's backup, Frank Reich.

"I have felt since I saw Ryan play at Harvard that he had the capability to win in the league" Polian said.  "I felt about Ryan Fitzpatrick, with a little different skill set by the way, the way I felt about Frank Reich.  When I saw him(Fitzpatrick) play, I said this guy's a winner.  This guy's got that spark about him that just tells you he can win football games and of course we know what Frank did under the most difficult and trying conditions."

Asked whether or not the Bills could make the playoffs, win in the playoffs, reach a Super Bowl and win it with Fitzpatrick at the helm, Polian answered it remains to be seen. "Do you believe he can go out there and execute, play under pressure, move the football against the best defenses in the NFL?" Polian said. "I do believe that and I think Chan(Gailey) feels that way too."

Polian's Bills teams had Kelly to lead the offense but they also had a defensive superstar in Bruce Smith.  The 2012 Bills hope they have their defensive superstar in Mario Williams.

Polian believes the Bills defensive line group should be right up there among the best in the NFL this season and a lot of that responsibility falls on the shoulders of Williams.  "He has to play at a new level and I think he is capable of doing that" Polian told WGR.

"I think he has to dominate.  He put up great numbers in Houston but he didn't consistently dominate. He wasn't in a position where people counted on him to be consistently dominant for them to win.  He's very good, very skilled, very talented. He has the physical capability to dominate and in Dave Wannstedt's system with Mark Anderson on the other side, which he never had in Houston, he's got a chance to really be something special."

Polian said the Bills now have the personnel that are perfect for their defensive scheme and that wasn't the case last year.
