I said it a couple of weeks ago when camp opened. The cycle is the same every year for me. Alright, football practice, awesome. That's quickly followed by looking forward to the first pre-season game. Then, nipping at the heels of that thought, holy crap, when does the regular season start?
I got there last night right around the time Vince Young was sacked the first time he dropped back to pass.
That was on the second play of the second half and suddenly it felt like September was a long ways off. By the time Young took the field we had already watched the offense penalize itself out of a touchdown under the guidance of Ryan Fitzpatrick and fail to score on 6 snaps from inside the Washington 4 yard line with Tyler Thigpen under center. That sequence ended with a missed 22 yard field goal by Rian Lindell.
Is it September yet? Maybe if I keep writing it'll get here sooner.
There was for me, a lot of personal and professional excitement heading into this game. Being in the booth for the pre-game show and working at the station that carries the games again is a source of pride.
In the end, it's still just a pre-season game and wherever I work, pre-season games usually are hideously boring. This one was no exception.
Mario Williams didn't shoot lasers from his eyes or break anyone in half, or, you know, tackle anyone. The number one defense looked really good on their first two series, then gave up an 80 yard drive. The number one offense didn't bother with the running game at all, choosing to spread it out and let Fitzpatrick call the plays in a no huddle attack that never got going.
