LSU has to have a running game to compete at the level they are use to. The loss of
potential first round pick Chris Faulk at tackle has hurt the LSU running game this year.
LSU got their running game back on track behind freshman Jeremy Hill. Hill ran over
a tough South Carolina defense for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Remember this is
the same South Carolina defense that shut-down a good Georgia ground game last week.
Future first round pick safety Eric Reid had a key interception of Connor Shaw in the
fourth quarter to help LSU gain the lead. South Carolina only had 206 yards of offense.
South Carolina is in the middle of a brutal part of their schedule. Next week they have to
travel to the “Swamp” to play Florida.
Texas Tech 49 West Virginia 14
Hard to say what was more shocking in this game? How the Texas Tech defense stopped
Geno Smith or how the Red Raiders offense looked like the old Red Raiders offense
when Mike Leach was coach. Seth Dodge threw for six touchdowns to lead the way on
offense for Texas Tech. Geno Smith moved the ball but couldn’t get it in the end zone.
Smith finished the game 29 of 55 for 295 yards and one touchdown. Considering how
the Tech defense looked last week against Oklahoma this was a shocker that they played
Louisville 45 Pittsburgh 35
RIP Beano Cook an American original and former sports publicist at Pittsburgh. My
favorite Beano line was “When scholars are evaluating our society 150 years from now
the thing they will be most puzzled by is how pro football was more popular than college
football.” I’m really beginning to like Teddy Bridgewater and this Cardinals team.
Louisville is now 6-0 for the first time since 2006. Senorise Perry rushed for 101 yards
and a career high four touchdowns. How many people are upset now that they passed on
Charlie Strong as there head coach? Remember why? Rumor was it had to do with the
color of his wife’s skin which was opposite of his.
Rutgers 23 Syracuse 15
Turning point in the game was when early in the 3rd quarter Rutgers blocked a field goal
and ran it back 75 yards for a touchdown. Syracuse played well but turnovers did them in
again. Big East defensive player of the year Khaseem Greene forced three fumbles and
intercepted a pass as well. Greene started out the year as a mid-round pick in the draft
but will be moving up draft boards with performances like this one.
Kansas State 27 Iowa State 21
Bill Snyder tries to win games unlike NFL’s Romeo Crennel that makes Dick Juron look
like a cross between Don Coryell, Mike Martz and Clark Shaughnessy. This was just
a great game. Iowa State is much better than most people give them credit for. Collin
Klein led the way again for the Wildcats. Klein threw for 187 yards and rushed for 105
yards and three touchdowns. Kansas State’s defense came up big in the end holding Iowa
State to seven second half points.
Oklahoma 63 Texas 21
This marks the third game in a row for Texas against a ranked team (beat Oklahoma
State and lost to West Virginia). That’s no excuse for what happened on the field. This
is by far the worst Texas defense in my lifetime. The Texas fans were leaving before
halftime. With the score 8-2 in the first quarter, Oklahoma was backed-up on its own
five yard-line. No problem, Damien Williams went off tackle 95 yards for a touchdown.
Remember when Will Muschamp was supposed to be the coach in waiting at Texas. You
think Texas fans wish they might have forced Mack Brown out earlier. Florida’s defense
is doing pretty well under Muschamp.
Michigan 45 Illinois 0
Denard Robinson makes bad teams look awful. This was one of those games. Robinson
ran for two touchdowns and combined for 287 yards rushing and passing. The only scare
in this game for Michigan was when Robinson left the game for a series with an injury.
He returned and the romp was on. The Michigan defense has improved dramatically
under Brady Hoke and they held Illinois to only seven first downs in the game.
Alabama 42 Missouri 10
Eddie Lacy and TJ Yeldon rushed for 177 and 144 yards respectfully as Alabama cruised
to victory. Alabama has a great line to run behind. Alabama guard Chance Warmack
is the best guard prospect since Steve Hutchinson. Guards usually don’t go in the first
round but he will be the exception. The only thing that almost slowed Alabama down
was a 38 minute weather delay because of lightning. James Franklin was out at QB
for Mizzou and Corbin Bernstresser in. Bernstresser threw for only 126 yards and was
picked off twice. Missouri is from the “Show Me State” and so far they have shown me
that they are not ready for the SEC.
Boise State 20 Fresno State 10
Boise State is winning on defense this year. This isn’t the Boise team we are use to
seeing. Boise held David Carr’s little brother Derek in check as key to victory. Carr
was held in check most of the day until a fourth quarter touchdown pass when the game
was out of reach. Joe Southwick hasn’t made anyone forget about Kellen Moore yet.
DJ Harper is the key to Boise’s offense. Harper is a pro prospect and he rushed for 122
yards and a score.
Oregon State 42 BYU 24
Coach of the year honors have to be considered for Mike Riley. No one gave them a
chance at the start of the year. Many thought he was finished after starting quarterback
Sean Mannion went out. All Cody Vaz did in his first start since high school was throw
for 322 yards and three touchdowns. This was on the road against the fifth ranked
defense in college football. Oregon State rolled up 450 yards of total offense. The
strength of this Beavers team is defense. The Beavers picked off Riley Nelson three
times in the contest.
Notre Dame 20 Stanford 13 in OT
Can’t believe Notre Dame is going to keep those hideous uniforms in the rotation
instead the University's Bishop, President & Provost should order a full investigation &
supplemental Exorcisms for anyone involved in their creation. This was a hard fought
defensive struggle which we should have expected from these two teams. The Notre
Dame defense is one I have been touting all year. They came up big again. In overtime
Stanford had first and goal from the Notre Dame four yard line. Stanford tried to pound
it in four times and they were stymied just inches away from a score. Replay had to
make it official on the fourth down run. Tommy Rees hit TJ Jones from seven yards out
for the Irish’s score in overtime. Rees relieved and injured Everett Golson late in the
Florida State 51 Boston College 7
Since moving from the Big East to the ACC, it appears that the only person associated
with the Boston College Eagles who has consistently benefited is their travel agent.
Army rushed for 536 yards in upsetting BC last week, just what the struggling Florida
State offense needed. The question coming in was would the Seminoles respond after
losing last week to NC State. The answer was they jumped out to a 28-0 lead mid-way
through the second quarter on way to a romp. EJ Manuel threw for a career high 439
yards and four touchdowns. BC will be in the market for a new coach after the season, I
think Frank Spaziani’s days are numbered.
Florida 31 Vanderbilt 17
Will Muschamp has Florida has one of the biggest surprise teams of the year. He is
doing it the old fashion way with defense and running the ball. This isn’t your Steve
Spurrier or Urban Meyer Gators on offense but they remain undefeated. The Gators
won this one with special teams. They had a fake punt for a first down, a blocked field
goal too. Vanderbilt played very well on defense to keep it close. Jeff Driskell beat
Tim Tebow’s record by rushing for 177 yards. Driskell had only 166 yards for a career
coming into the game.
USC 24 Washington 14
Silas Redd and special teams won this game for the Trojans. USC blocked two punts in
the game, one of which they returned for a touchdown. Silas Redd was a beast running
the ball. Redd rushed 26 times for 155 yard and a score. Matt Barkley threw only 20
times on the night. Barkley looked like a lock to win the Heisman when the year started
but now may not even be invited to New York. Washington’s QB Keith Price needs to
cut down on the turnovers. He threw two more interceptions in this game which was a
killer in a close game.
TCU 49 Baylor 21
TCU coach Gary Patterson called this the best game his team played all year. TCU
suspended QB Casey Paschall last week for the season. They lost their first contest
without him. His replacement Trevone Boykin has responded to the challenge of being
the starting quarterback. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another against the
Bears. The TCU defense was led by Sam Carter who had an interception, two sacks and
seven tackles on the night.
Ohio State 52 Indiana 49
Usually the biggest news for Indiana fans is that midnight madness started Friday
night and basketball season is on its way. The Hoosiers put the most points they ever
put up against Ohio State but still it wasn’t enough. Braxton Miller has blossomed in
Urban Meyer’s offense. Miller threw for 211 yards and ran for 145 combining for three
touchdowns. This game was a track meet. Ohio State had 578 yards of offense and
Indiana had 483. Special teams were an adventure all night long. Both teams had a punt
blocked and Indiana recovered an on-side kick late in the game to make it close. Ohio
State is the pride of the Big 10 this year and they can’t even go to a bowl game.
Note: The first BCS standings will come out this evening.
