Merriman A Bill Again

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- The Bills have announced that pass rusher Shawne Merriman has signed a new deal with the team. Merriman was cut during training camp but did not catch on with another team in the early part of the season. Buffalo is a bit thinner on the defensive line now with Mark Anderson out indefinitely and Spencer Johnson hurt.

The Bills have released offensive lineman David Snow and defensive lineman Jay Ross to make room on the roster for Merriman. The Bills have also brought back S Delano Howell who was cut before the Arizona game.

As far as the reason for bringing Merriman back Chan Gailey said, “You can never have too many guys that we believe that can rush the passer. With Mark being out we and Spencer who was our swing guy being out we’d rather not go into a game with just three defensive ends. We don’t know how long Spencer’s going to be so we’re going to sign Shawne back and hopefully he’ll give us some pass rush off the edge.”
Chris Kelsay is happy Merriman’s back, “Shawne stopped in a sat in on some of our meetings so it’s good to hsave him back. It’s always nice to bring a guy back that’s acquainted and comfortable with the system that we’re in. The guy’s a professional, he knows how to go about his business, he knows what’s expected and he’s going to come right in a pick up right where he left off.” Kelsay added, “Shawne’s a great dude. He came in and he fit well. We don’t have a lot of egos on this team and he fit right in.

The Bills were much better up front in Arizona and that included Kyle Moore. Gailey said, “Kyle gave us some good pass rush. He’s still got some work to do against the run game, but he gave us some good edge pass rush and created some problems for their tackles. It means now that we’ve got another guy that we can somewhat depend on as a pass rusher.”

From the injury front Gailey said, “Spencer and Urbik have got the best chance to make it. Cordy’s probably the furthest behind at this point.”

CB Ron Brooks is eligible to return to practice and Gailey is hopeful he will.

The Bills Over/Under has been set at 6.5. What's your bet?
