Bills Defensive Coordinator Dave Wannstedt spent the bye week doing some self scouting. Everything was up for review, from personnel to scheme. Whether or not all of that work pays off remains to be seen. The first chance for the defense to begin to right its ship is Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Wannstedt was a guest on the John Murphy show last night and said there's no mystery as to what's ailing the defense. He cited a lack of consistency across the board from third downs to stopping the run to the pass rush.
Wannstedt said it comes down to "knowing what to do and giving fanatical effort."
At this point the Bills aren't succeeding in either area. They are currently ranked last in the league in points per game, rush yards per game and third down percentage.
Wannstedt has come under fire for not being more aggressive but he told Murphy that more blitzing means they would expose young cornerbacks. Wannstedt said the Bills will "live and die" with the front four who he called "our bread and butter". The Bills are ranked 15th in the NFL in sacks per pass play.
