Both the NHL and the NHL Players Association have agreed to continue negotiations under the watch of the US Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services.  Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh and Director of Mediation Services John Sweeney will serve as the mediators.  This is not a guarantee that the lockout will come to an end.  Mediators were used during the lockout that canceled the 2004-05 season.
