The NHL and players association met again on Wednesday, but this time they were joined by third party Mediators Scot L. Beckenbaugh and John Sweeney. The talks lasted from 1 PM to the evening hours of the day, and the parties agreed to continue the process on Thursday.
The two sides have agreed on a 50-50 split of revenues throughout the agreement, but are widely divided on the amount of additional payments the league will make to help ease the transition. The NHL has offered $211 million while the NHLPA asked for $393 million.
Mediation is not binding, meaning the sides will not be forced to go along with suggestions or recommendations. Mediation has been used in pro sports leagues in recent years, including Major League Baseball, the NBA, Major League Soccer and the NFL.
The NHL and NHLPA last met one week ago. The lockout is now in its 11th week with 422 regular-season games cancelled, plus the Jan. 1 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium and Jan. 27 all-star game in Columbus. Gary Bettman has said the league is losing as much as $20 million per day during the lockout.
