Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- Hamstring injuries are a delicate thing. Much like a tiny tear in a rubber band, you can't overexert the muscle too quickly because additional damage could be done.
That's the line of thinking that has gone in to the Buffalo Bills resting top wide receiver Stevie Johnson during Wednesday's practice from the normal week of work. Johnson did some light work with a strength coach along the side in the fieldhouse at One Bills Drive.
"I'll probably be back out there tomorrow, we'll see how it feels," Johnson said Wednesday. "Right now, it's still tight but I think it'll be more loose as the week goes on."
Chan Gailey is being cautiously optimistic about the wideout's chances.
"We think he'll be there, but he's got that hamstring that he sustained in the game and couldn't finish the game," said the head coach. "We'll see. We're resting him today to see if he can get well enough to go and do some things tomorrow, do a little bit more Friday and be ready to go Sunday. Let's just see."
In addition to Johnson, Kyle Williams, Eric Wood, Chris Hairston and Mark Anderson did not participate in the session. It's likely just a rest day for Williams, while the other three players have already been declared out against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.
Regarding Hairston, Gailey didn't have any positive news to report about his backup right tackle.
"They're still doing tests. Not looking good for now," he said. "We're hoping to get him back maybe for the last two."
Aaron Williams (knee), Leodis McKelvin (back) and Donald Jones (calf) all took part in the individual portion of practice. Williams and McKelvin were each limited on Wednesday, but Jones was a full participant. The wideout seems to be the farthest along of the three.
The Bills practiced indoors on Wednesday, but plan to practice outside on Thursday in preparation for the inclement weather projected on Sunday.
