Billy Baron led Canisius in scoring in the first half with 9 points in 18 minutes. The junior also led the team in rebounding, thanks to 5 boards in the opening half. Jordan Heath also had 5 rebounds in the first, while contributing 5 points. As a team the Griffs shot 36.7%, going 11-30 from the field. Head coach Jim Baron was quick to point out that while the total was not impressive, the result in the half was good, adding, “even though we didn’t shoot the ball well I thought it really kept us in the game. In the second half they just, came out and hit some…big shots.”
Canisius made just nine field goals in the second half, with seven of them coming from behind the three-point line. A crowd of 18, 120 watched as the Orange rattled off a 12-3 scoring run over the first four minutes of the second half. Coach Baron admitted that the bright lights and size of the Carrier Dome was something new for his team, saying, “we got a lot of guys that have never been in this environment, so that is going to be the challenge as we move forward.” The Griffs outrebounded Syracuse 37-34 overall, and won the offensive glass as well, 16-12.
Alshwan Hymes was suspended by Coach Baron for the first half of the game for a violation of team rules. The senior guard is from Dewitt, NY which is a suburb of Syracuse. He contributed 6 points and 4 rebounds in 14 minutes of action off of the bench. Hymes was the only player on the Griffs remaining to see game action in the team’s last meeting with the Orange two years ago. Syracuse thumped Canisius 86-67 in the 2010-11 season.
All of Isaac Sosa’s 15 points came from behind the three-point arc for the Griffs. The guard was 5-11 shooting, including 5-9 from three. Four different Syracuse players recorded 10-or-more points in the win, led by James Southerland. The senior forward scored 21 points and pulled in 5 rebounds. Michael Carter-Williams spread the ball around for the Orange with 12 points and 14 assists in 38 minutes. Brandon Triche added 19 points and Rakeem Christmas contributed 10 points in 21 minutes.
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim picked up his 899th win, thanks to the victory over the Golden Griffins. All of the wins have come in the Salt City. Boeheim ranks third among Division I head coaches, trailing Mike Krzyzewski (936) and Bobby Knight (902) in wins.
The Griffs will return home and tip with the Longwood Lancers on Monday night. The two teams tip-off at 7 o’clock from the Koessler Athletic Center, before Canisius plays at Temple on Wednesday and against UNLV next Saturday night.
