The Bills officially announced on Thursday that they've placed McKelvin on the Injured Reserve list, effectively ending his season with two games left to play. The cornerback has been dealing with a groin injury that kept him out of the team's most recent contest against Seattle.
Throughout the season McKelvin appeared in 13 games and started four of them at cornerback opposite rookie Stephon Gilmore. He had 21 total tackles, 3 passes defended and an interception that sealed the Bills' win over the Cleveland Browns.
McKelvin was benched after the first game of the season following a poor performance as the team's nickel corner, but then began to build up both his confidence and the coaches confidence in him with his return abilities. In 2012, the cornerback had the league's best average for punt returns among those that have had at least ten chances.
Averaging 18.7 yards per return on 23 chances, McKelvin also returned two of his opportunities for touchdowns. That also ranks first in the NFL. The fifth-year veteran also returned 18 kickoffs, averaging 28.3 yards per return.
McKelvin is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The Bills announced they've re-signed veteran linebacker Kirk Morrison to take McKelvin's place on the active roster.
