Bills without five Wednesday

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- As the Buffalo Bills prepare to end their regular season on Sunday, they started off their week of practice without five players on the active roster participating.

Safety Jairus Byrd, left guard Andy Levitre, defensive tackle Kyle Williams, safety Da'Norris Searcy and wide receiver Ruvell Martin all did not take part in Wednesday's session as the Bills gear up to take on the New York Jets on Sunday.

Byrd, Levitre and Williams have all missed a Wednesday at some point in the season to rest their respective injuries. Levitre has been dealing with a knee injury that has kept him on the injury report for much of the second half of the season, while Williams has gotten in to a habit of taking Wednesday's off to rest his ankle ailment.

Ahead of Wednesday's practice, head coach Chan Gailey said that Martin would not be practicing on Wednesday or Thursday, having been excused for personal reasons. The wideout is expected to be available for the regular season finale.

Searcy has already been ruled out for this Sunday's contest due to a groin injury suffered in the first half of the team's last game against the Miami Dolphins. Gailey said on Wednesday they likely won't put the safety on Injured Reserve, because they didn't need the extra spot on the 53-man active roster.
Defensive end Mark Anderson, wide receiver Marcus Easley and tight end Dorin Dickerson were all taking part during the session. Anderson (knee) and Easley (hamstring) each missed the Dolphins game, while Dickerson (ankle) had to be carted off the field during the same contest.

The Bills made one move on their practice squad on Wednesday. The team announced they've signed tight end Derek Buttles and have released offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts. Buttles has spent some time in Orchard Park, participating in the team's rookie tryout before the season.

The Bills have two more days of practice before they take on the AFC East rival New York Jets at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday.
