Look, I'm as done as you are with the notion that Ryan Fitzpatrick can take the Bills, or any other team, anywhere as a starting quarterback.  It's just that it's pretty easy to construct a scenario where the Bills still feel the need for a veteran QB on the roster and, well, Fitz is a veteran QB.

My plan at QB if I'm the Bills is this.  Pick the best guy I can with the 8th pick and hope he's ready to play in September and lead the Bills to all sorts of glorious wins and crap.

What if he's not ready and I need a guy?  How about Fitzpatrick?  Sure, the money is pretty big for a guy who you are hoping isn't going to be your guy, but anybody you replace him with isn't likely to be cheap either.  Alex Smith and Mike Vick are the two most popular names amongst fans right now.  Let's assume they both get released.  I don't know that they command the same $10 million Fitz is due, but I wouldn't predict they'll be cheap. 

Fitzpatrick counts against the cap either way, so now I've got dead QB money, plus the new veteran QB money, plus 1st round draft pick QB money.  I know we don't care about the dough, but that ties up lots of space.

Then there's this.  Signing Alex Smith or Michael Vick feels very much to me like that's it, here's your new QB.  I don't want a cut, maybe not so good, concussion prone fumble machine as the Bills new QB.  I want the kid they draft to be the new QB.

Provided Fitzpatrick is open to the idea of caddying for the kid, I like him as the insurance policy veteran guy much more than these other options.

I think basically what I'm getting at is this.  If the Bills need a not so good veteran QB who likely won't beat out the kid they draft, I'm thinking they already have one in Ryan Fitzpatrick.
