Bills Series in Toronto Renewed

TORONTO (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Bills series in Toronto has been renewed.  It's a five-year deal with one regular season  home game per year being played outside of Ralph Wilson Stadium.  There will also be one exhibition game played in Toronto over the life of the five-year agreement.

The Bills made the announcement at a press conference Tuesday at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, with team president and CEO Russ Brandon, head coach Doug Marrone and executive vice president of strategic planning Mary Owen on hand. They were joined by Rogers Media president Keith Pelley and the executive director of the Bills in Toronto Series, Greg Albrecht.

"Our first step was to regionalize east and to be a part of St. John Fisher and what we were able to do there. But, it was always in our plan to regionalize north and come up to Toronto, and be a part of this great community," Brandon said Tuesday. "We are very fortunate to have a market of this size very close to Buffalo, where people in Buffalo come up and enjoy all the activities here in Toronto. And people in Toronto come down and enjoy our activities. That's a great atmosphere to be a part of."

One of the biggest concerns from fans of the Bills -- and at times even the players on the team themselves -- is that many don't consider the contest played at the Rogers Centre to be a typical home game.

Brandon responded to that as well.

"We're not trying to replicate the experience of Ralph Wilson Stadium," he said. "There's 55 years of great tradition there/ We're trying to build a new tradition here with one game a year, and have all these fans come back and experience one, two, maybe eight games, seven games, down at Ralph Wilson Stadium. And we have seen that over the last five years. We've seen double digit increases in fans coming from southern Ontario. Southern Ontario is now our number-two sister market when it comes to fans in Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sundays."

According to the Toronto Sun, the Bills will make significantly less money in this deal as opposed to the original contract.  Rogers Communications paid $78 million for what turned out to be seven games, five regular season and one exhibition.  The average of   $11.14 million a game was more than double what the Bills make for a game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Why is the Bills in Toronto series a necessary one to the NFL franchise? Brandon addressed that with the media.

"First and foremost, I'm very excited about the future of Buffalo," he remaked. "But, you cannot deny the fact that we've had corporate decline, we've had population drain over the last 30 years. We have gone from when Mr. Wilson bought this team, the 20th largest market to the 56th largest market, and the NFL has gone the other way.

"My responsibility is to make sure that we keep this franchise on solid footing, and that is how we've survived long-term, is to regionalize our product and our brand. Our focus, we're no different than any other business in Buffalo that tries to expand north of the border."

The Bills have gone 1-4 in contests played at Rogers Centre.  They lost to the New York Jets in 2008, Miami in 2009 and Chicago in 2010.  The lone victory came over Washington in 2011 and this past season the Bills were blown out by Seattle, 50-17.

The extensions extends from 2013 through 2017. The lone preseason game will be played in Toronto in the third season of the agreement, 2015.

They will make significantly less $$ - Then why ?????
Just like the title says. Maybe Russ should actually try Winning and making the Playoffs and use that as a marketing tool. Disgusted and embarrassed.

It is like sticking their hand in a buzz saw......
How many times do they have to do it before they come to the conclusion that other than the money, the whole caper is a fiasco. The players do not want to play there, and the real Bills fans do not want to go there. The Packers tried the same thing for a number of years, splitting their home games between Green Bay and Milwaukee before they came to their senses. Green Bay is half the size of Buffalo, and the Packers decided that they could do just fine without the Milwaukee dates. All the Bills are really doing is gaining 30 million (which is nothing in today's NFL)in additional revenue for 5 likely losses that could keep them out of any playoff possibilities. I just wish that someone at WGR or the News would bring up the Green Bay - Milwaukee experiment.

Move already
Who cares. It is all about $$$$$$ period. Look who is running the circus. Goodbye and take $$$$$$ Sabres with you!

Who needs wins?
when you can have Money! I'm glad our new president will stop at nothing to win! oh wait, he must of lied. I can't wait for us to miss the playoffs due to our toronto loss. Totally worth it Russ!
01/29/2013 8:14AM
Simple Math
Five regular season games one exhibition game = Seven games? Editing please!
01/29/2013 8:39AM
Good news!
Steal all the money you can from the Canadians! It's like, we'll give you a crappy product and you pay for it double. I see nothing wrong with this.

Shocker
I'm trying to be positive with all the Ralph Jr. comments about Russ, but this renewal is silly. We have an opportunity to reinvent this team with a major leadership change-over and we just go on doing business the same as usual. We DON'T need to play in Toronto...period. I don't see others (ie: Dallas going to a larger market-San Antonio with a home game). How would that go over down there?
01/29/2013 8:56AM
And...
the future becomes the past again.
01/29/2013 8:57AM
joke
absolute joke
01/29/2013 9:13AM
What a
crock.
01/29/2013 9:18AM
Idea
Just move all scheduled home games in December to the Rodgers Centre. This way the games would be on TV and I wouldn't have to worry about a blackout due to a non sellout.
01/29/2013 9:23AM
Good math
How do "five regular season and one exhibition" equal "seven games" ?
01/29/2013 9:29AM
Really?
I thought prostitution was illegal? That's exactly what the Bills are doing in giving away their competitive advantage.
01/29/2013 9:32AM
No Surprise
The more things change in the organization the more things stay the same. Just when they have you believing this team is going to be run differently with Ralph out of the picture they go ahead and continue to run this team more like a business. Why not play a home game at Syracuse University every year on top of it considering the new staff and "QB of the future" Ryan Nassib on his way in???
01/29/2013 9:40AM
This is...
Completely embarassing. Pathetic. But then again, it is the Buffalo Bills, so what do you expect. It's not even 9:40am and my day is ruined already due to this news.
01/29/2013 9:53AM
$$$$$ is al Bills think
I'm a Bills season ticket holder! This is B.S.! 1 and 4 in canada! I hope the Bills are on the road to the playoffs next year, and the game they need to win is in canada, and they loose knocking them out of the playoffs.Becasue what ever you say THIS IS NOT A HOME GAME!!!!!
01/29/2013 9:59AM
The Toronto joke series...
This is unbelievably outrageous! Im furious over this! Once again this is all about money. From a football point of view, this is a BIG JOKE! Nothing against the people in Toronto, they are not passionate football fans to give the Bills any edge. Just look at last season season's game against Seattle in which the Bills got totally embarrassed. This is really not a crowd factor home game for the Bills. This whole thing of the renewal just made me so sick to my stomach! The day is ruined now. Thanks Russ Brandon and Ralph for embarassing me again with this Toronto series useless garbage.
01/29/2013 10:19AM
What a joke....
It's all about the money! When the visiting team has more fans then the home team. WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!! This is not a home game for Buffalo, you take it away from the fans. Especially since the fan base going to the game in Toronto is horrible.
01/29/2013 10:38AM
BS
I am giving up my season tickets this year as i cannot stand this anymore. Why only 1 pre season game? Lets stiff the local community by making us pay full price. Ridiculous!
01/29/2013 10:40AM
Lose to Toronto and fire RUFF
Don't care what happens as long as Ruff is here. Ruff is the cancer of the team.
01/29/2013 10:57AM
Bad Decision
This shows the real lack of commitment to having a true winning team by giving away one home game each year. And the financial gain is now even less. It makes no sense. WOuld NE, the Jets, Minn, or GB be willing to do the same, being so close to Canada. This is a really poor decision on the part of management.
01/29/2013 11:35AM
Pure Exhibition game money grab
I was actually hoping that the spineless politicans of WNY would have gussied up enough courage to place a rider on the Bills stadium costs for the next 10 years that any NY money would be for the team to actually play in...gasp..NY and that should the Bills chose to renew the Toronto series, then the monies made payable by the NY government would be paid at 1/8 less per year. But, WNY politicians just kick the can, and never do anything positive for the region. This is a horrible game; where it has an exhibition atmosphere (how many jerseys of teams not even playing in that game are on display, and why does the supposed 'visiting' team get more cheers?!!?).
01/29/2013 11:36AM
13 going on 18
13 straight years without a post season look and the Bills management are confident that giving up home field and a passionate hometown crowd is the recipe to reverse the trend. This fan is thinking not. 1-4 in the first experiment, with positive results like those why do we bother having any home field games. The Toronto fan base is not ours, the stands are rarely full, the atmosphere is more rock concert than NFL. . . there are many many reasons this doesn't make any sense, therefore it has to be making 1 Bills Drive serious money!
01/29/2013 11:41AM
Unreal
Significantly less money, and we're to be told this is necessary to the team's long term viability? Any NFL team is a ludicrously profitable venture, wherever they play. This is just 5 more years of a competitive disadvantage for the Bills.
01/29/2013 12:52PM
Bills fans take the hit.
Another slap in the face for the Bills fans. Just WIN and the RALPH will be SOLD out every GAME.
01/29/2013 2:41PM
It make Business Sense, but not Football Sense
I understand the business side of things and the shrinking market in Buffalo, but from a football standpoint, this is not a home game. I can only hope that the Bills start to turn things around in the next couple of years in putting together a winning team that can give our Northern fans something to cheer about rather than embarrassing them.
01/29/2013 4:00PM
Toronto Joke!
What an absolute joke this is! They actually signed for less money! What is this an episode from Seinfeld where George held out for less money??
01/29/2013 6:10PM
Once again...
from the one who despises Barfalo more than anyone else one the planet...you DON'T DESERVE A FRANCHISE IN PRO SPORTS ANY MORE !!! Your own CEO even says it... Buffalo's headed one way and the NFL is headed the other. Sell out that dump you play in at Xmas-time when games are scheduled and then you can shout back at me...in the meantime, I'm right. Be gone losers.
01/29/2013 7:56PM
Mike
Right, because attendeance has shown it's a hit up there.
01/29/2013 8:42PM
I hate it...
47 years a Bills fan and all BUFFALO Bills games should be played in BUFFALO.
01/30/2013 6:13PM
count your blessings
I suspect management is doing everything possible to prevent this beloved franchise from moving to L.A. or to one of the other 55 markets that are larger than we are. We either enlarge our fan base or it will be goodbye bills. let's give these guysa chance to keep our team here.
01/30/2013 8:27PM
Couple Things
1. How does having a few thousand people from Toronto come to the Bills game at the Ralph help out in any way shape or form? Monetarily it is negligible. 2. If it is such a great deal why don't we play half our games there? Because it isn't a great deal for anyone but the Bills FO.
