Grigorenko saw his ice time diminish in a low-scoring game and has already shared time with John Scott. Is Tillman, the skateboarding dog, next to play with Grigorenko?

Let Grigorenko off his leash

To begin today's story I'd like to open for you a window into my email account. Here's a stirring example of the email I get, quoted verbatim:

"Friday on 'Who Let The Dogs Out', Charlie Sheen, Gary Sinise, Dick Van Patten and Jimmy Van Patten appear alongside skateboarding dog Tillman and his friends in the Hallmark Channel new original series premiere."

You were expecting me to publicly embarrass a fan for some lame, spelling error-laden commentary about the Sabres? Who do I think I am, a sportswriter from the Buffalo News?

I'm insulted.

No, instead it's a nod to my friends at Hallmark who flood my mailbox with information on shows I can't imagine having to watch. But I stay on the mailing list because of the stellar combination of celebrities they promote for their shows -- Tori Spelling and that guy from Ally McBeal, Julia Stiles with Kate Winslet's stuck-up mom in Titanic, etc.

Some combos make sense while others just seem so random.

Like Mikhail Grigorenko and John Scott.

(Whew, I finally got there. Thanks for your patience.)

Wouldn't you know it. Grigorenko, the rare Sabres prospect to draw serious raves in the department of offensive talent, has in five games accrued no points and has even shared ice time with the player on the roster whose presence makes the least sense, Scott. I was at Friday's game which was scoreless after two periods and 1-1 until late and sat annoyed but not surprised that Grigorenko was to play less than seven minutes.

Because when you a need a game-changing goal in a defensive struggle, you need Jochen Hecht out there (total ice time: 18:26).

Terry Pegula said upon buying the team two years ago that the new reason for the Sabres' existence was to win the Stanley Cup.

Have we started playing to win yet?

Surely on Friday night Grigorenko made some misstep in his defensive responsibilities that led to his playing so little. And Lindy Ruff probably figured he had the better goalie in the game -- Ryan Miller vs. Dan Ellis -- so stressing defense was the way to go. (Of course, since every goalie in the league is almost equally good there is little justification for this thinking. For their careers Miller makes six more saves than Ellis on every 1,000 shots, or about one every six games.)

Pegula's press conference almost two years ago marked one of my happiest days as a sports fan. To think the Sabres were going to shift into overdrive and compete financially and otherwise with the NHL's big dogs was a thrill.

Thing is, they've totally dropped the ball on the "otherwise". And had I known then what I would see the last two years, that day would have been less exciting.

You simply cannot claim a newfound attack mentality on the Stanley Cup and then continually extend the contracts of your coach and general manager in the wake of middling results. Well, I guess you can do this -- but don't ask anyone to take you seriously next time.

Furthermore while some player moves have been made, others were needed. No trade was made in the middle of last season when it was going off the rails. Derek Roy was dealt a year late. In my opinion, the Sabres still don't have the scoring to win. And any strategy based on a continuing belief that Miller, while good, is such a cut above the league standard in goal is fated to disappoint.

And then there's Grigorenko. Darcy Regier, to his credit, took a risk in the draft on a talented player from whom other teams stayed away. Today the Sabres announced that Grigorenko will play beyond the junior tryout period and continue on with them.

To that, I say good. Now give him ice time and keep him the heck away from the lug, Scott.
Next thing you know he'll be paired up with a skateboarding dog. Like Charlie Sheen is.

WGR and Miller Hate.
Why do you guys hate on Ryan Miller so much? He's one of our best players and leaders. When you become the GM or coach of an NHL team, then you can tell me what goes and what doesn't. But until then, your opinions are garbage.

there ya go
I did my yearly read/listen to you, thank G* that's over. Fire Schopp!

GOOD
He's staying... Now get rid of Lindy and some of his wusses.

Pegula Is Turing Into a Disappointment
Pegula needs to wake up change the management structure of this team if he truly wants to win a Cup. I can't believe he extended Regier before any games were even played this season. I don't know who the future GM should be, but I know that Lindy and Darcy have not had it so bad over the past 15 years that they had no chance to win a Cup. One thing they have had is 15 years of consistency between the two of them and still they miss the playoffs 50% of the time. Don't tell me "the chains are finally off" these guys. The Ducks, Lightning, and Hurricanes have all won Cups and they're not huge markets with the biggest budgets. Darcy will always be too conservative and although I've always liked both he and Lindy as persons, I'm ready for a change. Until it happens, Pegula and the Sabres will not be winning a Cup for Buffalo. Bank on it.

Perception Problem
The Sabres have a perception problem. The people in charge do not see them for what they really are. Alex Galchenyuk in Monteal, Jonathan Huberdeau in Florida and Dougie Hamilton in Boston have all recieved considerable ice time and all have rewarded their teams so far with quality play. Here in Buffalo, Mikhail Grigorenko has been limited and so have the results. Why? The Sabres need to realize that they are no better off than Montreal and Florida and certainly not even close to Boston. They need to realize they are not a very good team. They need to realize they do not have sufficient scoring. They need to realize things need to change. One place to start is by playing Grigorenko. He should be allowed to shine. He should not be held back by Ruff and his (percieved) system. Let him go. Play him on the top line. Luke Adam managed to start last year with Vanek and Pomminville somehow how our most potentially explosive centerman deserves a crack. Granted, things are different now, The Sabres have Hodgson and Ennis playing center. But are we so sure these guys are better than Grigorenko? Neither have a track record. They're just guys that Ruff and Reiger tell us can do the job. They've really done little to assure me that they are right in thinking that way. Stop thinking that Grigorenko can do nothing but hurt you in the defensive zone. Start realizing there is a good chance he could help you considerably in the offensive zone and set him free. What's the worst that could happen? We might miss the playoffs. Again.
01/29/2013 1:56PM
The only problem with this is that Ruff won't pull Hodgson away from Vanek and Pommers
And then you have Ennis, Foligno and Stafford which was unstoppable last year towards the end...that means that Grigorenko is stuck with Ott and Hecht or Gerbe - he can't produce with those guys! I would move Foligno to the third line with Ott andHecht and bump Grigorenko to center between Ennis and Stafford. Now THAT could be interesting and makes more sense for a third line...
01/29/2013 2:29PM
Welp, We're keeping him.
I see what you're getting at. Let me elaborate. We're keeping the kid. It's time to surround him with talent. We have extra D, a few so-so "disposable" forwards and lots of talented prospects. We have several kids in the minors that should be competing for a spot next year or the year after, when Vanek, Miller, Pommenville and Ott all need to be resigned. I don't know what combination of who would get this kid his "Mogilny."....But it's Regiers job to find that Winger. A defensively responsible second winger like Leino or Ott will surly help the line with /- but this kid is supposed to be a natural playmaker and is obviously a natural scorer. Lets get him a winger....lets Hope Foligno, Ennis & Stafford wake up. We can't be playing this talented center with Scott or Hecht.
01/29/2013 2:55PM
Enough said
The Sabres at least made the right decision on Grigorenko by keeping him in the NHL, what I don't understand is how they are NOT utilizing him and his skills. He's 18 yrs old and an offensive talent so why make him be concerned about his defensive zone respponsibilites....let him focus on the one thing that he is noted for...SCORING...just turn him loose and put him on a line that can help him in this endevour.....Not Scott or Kaleta or Hecht etc....Lindy has got to give this kid some slack and give him more minutes or he'll end up like a lot of other Sabre prospects gathering slivers on the bench and then a the press box This team needs offense and thats why the Sabres took a chance on him...give him the opprotunity to help this team...with a 3 game loosing streak it needs all the help it can get
01/29/2013 3:45PM
right on
could not agree with you more schoop.if they want hecht on the roster;fine ;just have have him kill penaltys not have him out there almost 20 minutes a game, put the kid out with some talent and watch him flourish.
01/29/2013 4:27PM
From this day forward....
the sole reason for the existence of the Buffalo Sabres will be so that I can have Lindy and Darcy as friends for life...how cool is that? T.Pegula.
01/29/2013 4:41PM
First smart Move this year!
Keeping Grigorenko is a start! Second is todays lineup change! Much needed! 3rd we still need some new faces.
01/29/2013 4:42PM
Fire Ruff Now
Get it over with and can him. Ruff can't identify talent and can't put his best players in a position to excel. The only time he ever got it rght with the best players was when Drury and Briere were here. Prior to Drury and Briere and after he never, ever got it right. Agreed that Derek Roy getting shipped out was a year too late. Gaustand, Connolly, and Chris Butler were also a year too late. If they want to break this trend ship out Sekera and Leopold right now while they still probably command some value. Don't let them become the upcoming offseason's "year too late" players.

Mike here's the problem: Pegula made Ruff the allpowerfull on Sabres...
Shockingly to local die hard and intelligent area hockey watchers, almost immediately Pegula like Rigas and Golisano before him, exhibited a STUNNING lack of hockey knowledge annointed Ruff the most powerful man in the hockey department. Since then Ruff's arrogance has reached alltime highs in exhibiting his hockey ignorance by continuing his lifelong obsession trying to be the next Scotty Bowman. Ruff's Bowman obsession is the BIGGEST problem with this team holding it to mediocrity... Allow me to explain... Early in his great career, Bowman was notorious for verbally berating, antagonizing and benching his STAR players in order to motivate them. Then he would "coddle" his "plumbers" and idiots by giving them extra ice time to further "motivate" and alienate his stars. During the 70s - 80s players like Mahovlich, LaFleur on the habs and later Rick Martin, Rene Robert and others HATED PLAYING for Bowman but played hard nonetheless because they were players who were proud of there ability and teams. Those were the players of THOSE times. When players like Andreychuk, Sheppard and Barasso came along Bowman's tactics started to fail, players underachieved and Bowman was fired here. Bowman, being intelligent, later in his career understood he needed to change his tactics with his new stars who were of a different breed mentally, more rebelious than players of before. He adjusted, stopped being a "dictator" and let them "do their thing" understanding they would happily produce at an allstar level and lift "THEIR" team as opposed to "HIS" team and presto: alot of Cups. Imagine Bowman berating Mario or Jagr or Kevin Stevens, or Yzerman, Shanahan, Hull!!??? Not too productive, eh? Bowman understood his talented players wanted to win AS BADLY AS HE DID and he let them perform freely and... IT WORKED! Ruff will never adjust like that. He cannot imagine ever not being THE BOSS, or "The DICTATOR" here. He wll never relent his strangle hold on the Sabres players and personnel decisions because this is HIS operation and it's "my way or the BENCH" for any player regardless of talent. Consequently talented Sabre players who could carry this team to a Cup never can mature and develop into GREATNESS. Ask youself... in Ruff's 15 years here, has he ever nurtured and developed a true hall of fame STAR??? NEVER. Wouldn't Vanek be a 50 - 60 goal man anywhere else? Wouldn't Stafford be a 30 - 40 goal man anywhere else? Wouldn't Miller be an Allstar EVERY YEAR? Quite the contrary, any player who could gave been of that star quality has done nothing but LANGUISH here for the overbearing and suffocating idiot that is Ruff. Vanek and Stafford are just 2 examples of living in Ruffs concentration camp. Ever see these two smiling on ice? They look like it's the end of the world each time their out there, yet idiots and plumbers like Kaleta Gerbe and Hecht are lovin life and Ruff. It's disgusting and incredible that Ruff has survive 3, count em THREE different owNerships and counting. While having won... NOTHING!!! Someone tell me what other coach in pro sports has accomplished that!?? Only in hockey heaven... where mediocrity is progress! Someone give Pegula some hockey lessons because he may go done as the dumbest hockey owner EVER. FORE...

Stale
Good grief, and you complain that the Sabres' management is stale. No one seems to complain about sports talk show hosts.
01/30/2013 12:50AM
What do you expect?
This is an organization that rewards sub-par. How else can you explain the reign of regier and ruff? How many years have they been here, and how many championships have they won? How many playoffs have we missed, in a league where almost half the teams make the playoffs anyway? If this team's only purpose is to win the stanley cup, then why are we giving extensions and raises to the team's leaders when they aren't even leading this team into the playoffs, much less leading them to championships? And we're off to another stirring start under ruff and regeir, where they just got done struggling with what should have been the easy decision to keep grigorenko with the team, while over playing mediocre players like hecht, because apparently players like hecht are masters of ruff's 'system'. Of course that makes perfect sense, because who better to master a mediocre system than a mediocre player?

Re:WGR and Miller Hate
He is nothing but average and can't hold leads. Three games in a row that killer clunker goes in from the blue line. He is Mister Softee and not Dominic Hasek. Miller sucks is my opinion. He blows!
01/30/2013 1:12PM
Schopp and White must shut up
Duct tape just might work. It's on sale at Walmart.
01/30/2013 2:41PM
Did you ever notice....
WGR tones it down when it comes to bashing the Sabres? Its hysterical actually the same coach and gm for 14 years and no talk about that at all. What a joke I bet you Pegula has in his contract with WGR they cant talk bad about this team but when it comes to the Bills this station will rip them to shreds. I dont wanna hear 13 years with no playoffs cause 6 out of 10 years in Hockey is almost just as bad considering half the league makes it.

Bowman analogy hits nail on head
The comparisons to Scotty Bowman are very accurate, including Bowman's penchant to change linemates like you hopefully change your underwear. They aren't playing for Ruff. He was a plumber type player, somewhat aggressive, 3rd line winger or 5th 0r 6th defenseman, and he loves and rewards this type of player with abundance of ice time. He ruins talented players, case in point, Luke Adam, 10 goals as rookie til Xmas last year. Ruff put him at wing on 4th line and took the heart out of him. He destroys player's confidence. Do you really think Adam wants to come up to Sabres and play for a guy who has no confidence in his game. I feel Pegula is too much of a fan and not enough an owner. They have stopped listening to Ruff. They are not playing for him. Hopefully Ted Black will clean house like he did in Pittsburgh and then they won the cup.
01/30/2013 3:53PM
Goaltender Comparison Faulty
Um, Miller *is* a cut above the league standard. He's not tops of the league, but he's a top 10 goalie over the last several years, even with his down years factored in. And who would we replace him with? Your comparison of Ellis & Miller is also completely wrong, looking at 6 saves over 1,000. Look at it the other way... Ellis lets in 8-10% more goals than Miller. That's suddenly significant, isn't it? But as for all your comments on Grigorenko? Spot on.

re: Bowman analogy hits nail on head; amd my underwear...
Oh thanks man, it's really quite easy to see if you know your hockey for longer than 2006. Around these parts its tough to find many that do. Seems most started watching after the Sabres choked out in the 2006 playoffs. The Problem is even if Ruff was smart enough to GUIDE a dynamic and successful team, MR SOFTEEE would never plug the leaks on a championship level. Oh well maybe we should just extend Regeir, and Ruff and change the name from Walmart to PEGmart, eh! FOREEVER and Ever and Ever 4 some... By the way I wear my underwear one week then turn them inside out for he second week, it's the economy, stupid.

When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
