Grigorenko Scores, Sabres Fall in OT 4-3



On the same day the Sabres opted to keep him with the big club, Mikhail Grigorenko scored the first goal of his NHL career, but it wasn't enough as Buffalo dropped a 4-3 decision to Toronto in overtime. Matt Frattin's 2nd of the night came with 1.5 seconds remaining in the extra frame.

The Leafs got the scoring started about midway through the opening period on Jay McClement's first goal of the season. McClement skated between Tyler Myers and Jordan Leopold to jam in a rebound off the post. Just a little over five minutes later, Jason Pominville's fourth of the year tied the game on the power play. The Buffalo captain finished off a scramble for the puck in front of the Toronto net by lifting a shot over the shoulder of James Reimer. Mike Weber took on Mike Brown in a scrap near the end of the first. Weber went after Brown after the Maple Leafs forward boarded Patrick Kaleta, who suffered an upper body injury on the play.

Andrej Sekera gave the Sabres a brief lead in the second period, taking a beautiful pass from Drew Stafford and going backhand to roof a shot past Reimer. Toronto then grabbed the lead right back with a pair of goals within 2:41. The equalizer came just 1:12 after Sekera's goal when Frattin breezed toward the net and poked home a rebound. Not long after, Cody Franson let a shot go from the blue line that worked its way through traffic and behind Miller, giving the Leafs a 3-2 lead.

Buffalo tied it up 7:10 into the third on Grigorenko's first-ever NHL goal. The 18-year-old rookie forward slipped a backhand shot through Reimer's pads to make it a 3-3 game. The two sides appeared to be headed to a shootout, but Frattin stunned the First Niagara Center by finding the net at the 4:59 mark of OT.

The Sabres are now losers of four games in a row and head to Boston to face the Bruins on Thursday. Hear the call on WGR SportsRadio 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

As Bob Seeger says "TIME TO TURN THE PAGE" ... on MR SOFTEE...
It's time to send Miller to the bench and start and playing Enroth most of the time. He's solid with a great glove hand and excellent quickness, anticipation and recovery. He plays big and doesn't ch choke at the critical moments. Miller has lost all confidence, fights the puck every night and gives up soft goals at the most citical moments and all the other teams know it. Ruff: stop coddling prima donna Miller, he's done here.

You Can Hear a Pin Drop....
....in that arena. This team has no jump. That's on the coach. Lindy is coaching on fumes. He doesn't like the makeup of his team, that's evident...except maybe for Hecht who he plays and plays even after he takes an incredibly dumb, lazy penalty. It's equally evident that whatever he is selling, they aren't buying. The D have totally tuned this staff out and Miller plays half the time like he wishes he were someplace else. Maybe the time to grant his wish around dealine time when perhaps his value will be at his highest. Same for Stafford, Regher and Leopold. Not sure I want Darcy at the switch for thoise deals though. Regier doesn't get off the hook either for lining up three unproven centers and the ugly Hecht/Ellis 4th c nightmare. This team is plain weak. Sixteen years on the job and this is what we have....a mediocre defense 10 men deep and mostly unproven sketchy talent upfront with no decernable leaderanywhere on the ice. At least they scratched Nathan Pygmie. Too bad he does not have the talent to overcome his puny frame, because he has one of the few hearts on this team.

Why?

Time for another extension
At this rate, Ruff should get his extension soon. Lets reward a less than average coach! Ruff road the Hasek Train and everyone thought he was a good coach his first four years. First four years with Hasek we had 28 playoff wins. The next 11 seasons without Hasek, Ruff produces 25 playoff wins. Same team as last year, run by the same coaching/management staff. Why should we expect any better!

They are currently 30th in the league, with an abysmal 42% success rate. It's little things like that, that chip away relentlessly at their chances of winning, on a nightly basis.

What Were You Expecting
The only change from last year was dumping a 70-80 point guy for a 3rd line checker and hanging your hopes on an 18 year-old kid with a questionable attitude. Ryan Miller - the voice of the NHLPA
I can't believe this idiot mouths off about the CBA. I think it's funny we picked up grit in the off season to protect this clown. My hope is that Lucic runs him again. My hope is that the Sabres don't respond. While they are at it, maybe Chara can accidentally hop the Sabres bench and crack some of Lindy's ribs. Ted Black can make it a "fan appreciation night" by having Darcy stand next to him so they both get hit at the same time. I can dream, can't I? My best advice to all NHL fans in here: Find a good team to root for and stick with them. This team is as good as gone this year.

In Defense of
John Scott - in the post interview he said he didn't see the hit on Kaleta. However, Weber did and he took care of business. I watched the post game and hardly any of the criticism was about Miller. Two of the goals that Toronto scored were gifts by Miller by giving them juicy rebounds and a wide open net.

For those who are calling miller "Mr. Softy", look at the defense and the defensive play, they did nothing to stop 2 of the 4 goals scored. I saw at least 2 to 3 bad turnovers. Plus, the was at times no pressure at the blue line. I agree withthe people that say they need to win more faceoffs, however i disagree that it was all millers fault

Face-offs are no big deal
42 percent on face-offs is killing the team? So 8 additional wins out of 100 faceoffs (to get us to 50/50) will greatly improve the Sabres? This should be the least of anybody's worries. The Sabres will go in and beat the Bruins on Thursday, get us all excited again, then get hammered by the Habs and Panthers on the weekend. Again, we've all seen this movie before.

There's a few seconds left on the clock before the shootout. Knowing this, why not just haul down anyone entering your zone. Leopold's gotta do better...yes, Miller should have made the stop, but holy cow, better defending would have stopped the opportunity from even occurring.

I have played hockey for years and watch multiple games nightly. Am i the only one that sees a completely disjointed team. Other teams play together and move the puck up the ice as a unit this team plays as 5 individuals. The contrast is stark if you watch other teams in the NHL. That is on the coach. Where is the accountability on this team? You take stupid selfish penalties and your ice time is increased. We have basically 5 of the same type defensemen all having slightly average offensive skill and no defensive skill. How can you put a team together with that? Trade for one really good offensive defensemen or a couple stay at home defensemen. This team is going nowhere and without a lot of luck could be winless this season so far.

Here's the thing. Who wants Myers or Miller? Would you personally take Myers or Miller for Ryan and Getzlaf? Our best players would earn us new players of equal (Or with Darcy brokering the deal) less value. The Sabres do not have any talent they can trade for something else. None. Then, pile on top of that Buffalo has a cancerous stigma that players don't want to join. Maybe it's Ruff, maybe it's us fans, maybe it's our run down hollowed out city. It's going to take Ruff passing away for this team to find out if coaching was really the problem.

Let's face realitiy
Although the season is only six games along, it is immediately obvious that the Sabres are one of the worst teams not just in the division, but in the conference. I am glad Regier received a contract extension - he has earned it. However Ruff has worn out his welcome and is ineffective with this team. He needs to go. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to getting a great draft pick this June.

The Sabres
are awful awful awful. This team has played this way for years. It has nothing to do with prior ownership and Regiers hands being tied. That is a bunch of you know what. This team has for the most part paid for players to the cap limit. The problem is they overpaid some of these players. see Vanek Stafford Miller and the list goes on. Hey Terry open your dam eyes and quit with the continuation of the Ruff Regier experiment. It has brought nothing here for 15 plus years. This club is booooring. After the hit on Kaleta, Weber did respond. But Web basically got his azz kicked. I didn't see him throw one punch while Brown pummeled him with shots to the head.
