Episode XV - A New Hope - Grigorenko Carrying All of Us

Jeremy White - @JeremyWGR

The Sabres have stumbled out of the gate in Lindy Ruff’s 15th year.  General Manager Darcy Regier received a contract extension just before the season.  As top brass seems more entrenched than ever, I find myself holding on to an idea and clinging to one 18-year-old player.

It’s a lot to put on a kid, I know.  Mikhail Grigorenko has exactly one goal in the NHL and a ton of pressure to produce now that he’ll be with the Sabres for the year.

I’ve heard all the jokes: “Mancrush”... “Your new boyfriend” ... and all of those that you sent to me over twitter or text or whatever.  I don’t care.  In fact, if I’m being honest I think they’re funny.

Six games into this season something is happening to the Buffalo Sabres.  The ever-growing discussion about Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regier is reaching a boiling point (again).  There have been excuses.  There have been reasons that we’ve been given to explain away past failures.  They were believable.  Stomach-able.  You could talk yourself into believing them if you really wanted to.

***

I want to take you back to last year at this time.  The Sabres were 20-24-5 and with 45 points, sat tied for last place in the Eastern Conference (-24 on goal differential).  At that time I wanted the team to stink the joint out so they could get an elite forward.  I wanted an elite center.  I looked at NHL Central Scouting and found a name - Mikhail Grigorenko.

I mentioned Grigorenko by name.  It was the idea that I loved.  Elite talent.

By the NHL Draft I was thinking the Sabres should trade up for Alex Galchenyuk.  Two years ago I wanted to trade the farm for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.  Elite forwards win Stanley Cups.  Elite forward sell tickets, score goals, create fun, and put butts in seats.  They remind us that we like the sport.

I had my plan on January 30th of 2012.  It was my same plan from the summer of 2011 with RNH.  Stink out the joint and draft a kid at the top.  The Sabres didn’t have to.

The heroic run to miss the playoffs and Mikhail Grigorenko’s draft slide went hand in hand...and the two met in the middle.  The Sabres drafted him at #12 and my plan for hope was alive and well.

I don’t know that Ruff or Regier will change - ever.  What happens if the Sabres miss the playoffs this year?  What will be the reason?  What will be the excuse?  How will it be explained away?

Young team.

Chemistry problems.

Mental toughness.

Parity.

Half a season.

Who knows and who cares.

I’ve been called an optimist.  I take the intended insult, happily.  I live by a credo:  “Pessimism is rarely the more fun or fulfilling approach”.

I choose to believe in things, and in possibilities.  It’s why we all get into sports in the first place.

For too long I’ve clung to the excuses.  Let’s see we’ve heard about injuries and payroll restrictions... and bad luck... and potential...and how many more.  I believe some of these to be true.  Some are quite valid.  The problem lies now though, in stagnation.

Lindy Ruff will occasionally mention the “hope tank”...and mine’s about empty with this team.  There are still several players that I believe in.  I don’t think this team is some irreparable disaster.

That’s the rub here in Buffalo.  We’d settle for the knowledge that a change could come.  Imagine a roster-shaking trade or a coaching change.  Heck...we’d settle for the idea that it’s even POSSIBLE!

We don’t get that.

***

There’s a reason that Grigorenko’s appearance at the scrimmage was headline-worthy.

The ovation when he appeared for the shootout should have sent a message.

The standing ovation to announce his first goal last night should have sent a message as well.

He’s new.

He’s fresh.

He’s different.

Right now his best asset is that he has NOTHING to do with the last 14 years.

Listen to some of our callers...or your friends around town.  There is so much bitterness about the last 14 years and the stagnation that the biggest fear with Grigorenko seems to be that the past will suck him down with it.

If the Sabres were to hold a “Survivor” where fans were to whittle everyone down and vote people out of the organization...who lasts longer, Grigorenko or Ruff?  Grigorenko wins in a landslide, and we barely know him.

He’s an almost total unknown, but I’m still clinging to that idea.  The chatter in bars, and ovations at the arena tell me that many of us are doing the same.

When you have a team that doesn’t appear willing to make changes at Coach or GM or even with a certain group of “untouchable” players...what else can you do?

What Grigorenko needs most of all here is to...
Buy a really durable set of GOLF CLUBS! He's gonna use em EARLY AND OFTEN!!! Ruff is GOD! Pegula's a fan! Regeir is extended! All is well at team Golf!
01/30/2013 5:07PM
Hello Mr. Pagula!
Like the Bills the Sabres have us dreaming of things that will never be!
01/30/2013 5:20PM
Drinking the kool-aid
In a month or so from now when the effects of whatever it is your taking where's off I hope the comedown isn't too painful. This team is as it stands is going nowhere. 18 y.o. saviors come around about once a decade. And even then it takes years to develope.
01/30/2013 5:52PM
The Record?
What does the Sabres record have to be for Leadership seriously considers a change at coach? I'm serious- this will be an awful season on many fronts (including Miller's play) and this could quickly spiral out of hand. Is it 4-15, 7-20, 8-22?I can't defend Lindy any more...

Same old Same old!
I'm am so sick of this movie! It's the same thing yr after yr. I guess I've finally come to my senses and have stopped going to the games until mangement changes. Until then, everyone knows how the movie ends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
01/30/2013 6:39PM
Ruff
will ruin Grigorenko. This poor kid will fail in this system that Ruff, Regier and Pegula think will bring a Stanley Cup. They are delusional. If Grigorenko is smart he will go play for another team when his contract is up. His talent will be wasted here.
01/30/2013 6:48PM
TIME TO CLEAN OUT THE ROSTER
Where does the hope for this team lie? In Grigorenko, Foligno, Ennis, Hodgsen, Armia, Girgensons Pysek, McNabb(and maybe Myers if he can ever get his head out of his a$$). Not Stafford, Vanek, Miller, Pominville. The last four are tradeable commodities right now. They wont be in another 3 or 4 years. If you can get a first for Guastad (which was converted to Zemgus Girgensons) you should be able to get a first for each of those guys. Maybe with those four off the roster well really tank it for a few years. Get some higher draft picks. Load up on good young players. And watch a core of young talent grow together. This team is nowhere as long as the old core remains. Id rather wipe the slate clean and start from scratch. Ive had enough heroic runs to 8th or 9th place. Lets finish last overall for a few years and get some future superstars to go with the good young core we have and then maybe we can do something relevant in the playoffs.
01/30/2013 6:56PM
Not drinking any of the Kool-aid you people are
You people with your negativity make me sick. If you are so down on this team, then go watch something else! Just because the "last 14 years" haven't produced a Stanley Cup, that means Ruff and Regier don't know what they are doing? My God, that's ludicrous! You think that the fact that they didn't have the resources to work with until Pegula is an "excuse"? Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but that's poppycock! Now that they have the resources from Pegula, it's not gonna happen overnight! It takes time. I still believe and none of your stupid negativity will sway me from that.
01/30/2013 7:02PM
fear
if fear grig will not fit into ruffs style.ruff is a dump and chase pick up garbage in front of the net coach. ruff said no more pond hockey. well quit teaching it then.i have never seen a team start a rush get to the blue line STOP pass the puck behind them and WAIT at the blueline until whoever you passed it to takes it in. thats coaching.nothing else, anyways this kid is better then dump and chase and pick up garbage in front of the net.i fear his talent will be wasted here as long as lindy is coach.soon hell be benched because he didnt back check or something stupid.i say score goals. lots and lots of goals. heck with the rest.haha
01/30/2013 7:14PM
You are still a shill and so is Hamilton
I'm very optimistic that Ruff is going to ruin this kid. Ruff ruined Adam last season and Kassian is another victim, but the spell put on him by Ruff is starting to wear off in Vancouver. I hope Pegula wakes up soon and fires that man behind the bench and his horrid system.
01/30/2013 7:25PM
There is no hope Jeremy as long as Ruff is around
ABSOLUTELY NONE! I can't watch this team anymore.
01/30/2013 8:22PM
Nothing changes
Ruff will never change. He ruined Adam, don't give other kids a chance, may have ruined Myers, all ready benching Grigorenko but he got his boy Hecht back....if Ruff is here no play offs again
01/30/2013 9:11PM
Could happen
What would happen if he got sick of the Sabres and just went to play in the KHL?
01/30/2013 9:42PM
Pegula Get it together
Make a move now, and put lindy out in the pasture. Were doomed they way their playing.
01/30/2013 10:07PM
The Sabres Will Not Make the Playoffs - Unless..
the NHL extends the season into April, May, and June. If my memory hasn't failed me - the past couple of years the Sabres started the first 3 months of the seasons with a losing record. It wasn't until Jan, Feb, and Mar did they win more games than lose. Using that as model - this shortened NHL season(Jan, Feb, & Mar) will again show the Sabres with a losing season unless, as I said, the season is extended.
01/30/2013 11:13PM
re:Drinking the kool-aid
Jeremy isn't going to suffer a comedown. He's just going to come in his pants.
01/30/2013 11:18PM
Grigorenko is lipstick on a pig, Jeremy
The ignorance of hard facts that clearly outline this team's lack of performance top down is what is driving everyone crazy. I just want to hear Ted Black tell us all this isn't xbox again. So yeah, Golf Clubs are a good investment - and here's to hoping for another good draft pick. Perhaps by the time our young talent develops Lindy will have chosen to retire.
01/30/2013 11:25PM
Hmm...which is more laughable
....Jeremey's "what the Sabs need now, is love, sweet love" prayer with Grigerenko as it's star or the absolutely inane comments posted by sizable chunk of Talkin' Proud era ginswillers among the herd that spews here seemingly daily. Especially the "Team Golf" chucklehead above. He makes you want to root for Ruff and Regier, in spite of the now seasonal stumbling by the two. He's either blogging from BPC or Carl Paladino. Look...it is what it is. Teams often reflect their management. Regier is weak, and his roster is built in his image...sniveling and soft. He is selling you Tim Connolly in a Hodgson sweater and to date a poor man's Briere in Ennis. Neither have the experience, or the leadership around them, to lead this team anywhere at this point in their careers. Maybe they'll pan out but it was unfair to put them in the position he and Ruff did in the first place. And if your #1 and 2 centers are weak, face it, the whole things a tease at best. Stafford seems to have turned into a phony when it comes to being a threat and an APB needs to be issued for Tyler Myers, circa 2009. Miller just seems to be California dreaming half the time. All of which falls at the heands of management, and coaching. Stale players are supposed to be shipped out and coaches whose players have turned deaf on them need to go. Don't cry for Lindy...he had a longer run here than he's honestly deserved and will land on his feet elsewhere. Look at Randy Carlyle for crissakes. It's nice that Pegula is a fan. Time for him to start acting like an owner.
01/31/2013 6:52AM
That's your new "Tough Sabres"
After the hit on Kaleta, Weber did respond. But Web basically got his azz kicked. I didn't see him throw one punch while Brown pummeled him with shots to the head. And Ruff thinks this is going to get his team respect. Basically two of your playersjust got beat up. That's your new "Tough Sabres". What a joke.
01/31/2013 8:34AM
Coaches
Ruff should be GONE question is who is out there to replace him?
01/31/2013 9:06AM
What game are you guys watching?
Grigorenko isn't a dominant force on the ice; in fact most of the time he is invisible. Does he have some talent? Yes, of course he does. However, let's face facts here he isn't the speediest thing on the ice now is he? Pavel Bure and Alexandr Mogilny were wicked fast and could do all the things that you guys keep CLAIMING this kid can do. A contributing player for the team? Potentially, as long as Ruff goes and soon (Funny how everyone on WGR keeps trying to downplay how Ruff ruins players by twisting the facts: Tyler Myers played well his first season UNTIL Ruff was able to start teaching him how to play defence, then Myers started playing bad. Afinogenov started showing offensive skills and THEN Ruff taught him that wonderful two-way hockey "system", need I mention Raffe Torres Daniel Paille or Zach Kassian). Unfortunately, Ruff will be here forever as coach or GM/coach so this kid may as well go back to juniors or wherever until he can go to another team or with any luck get traded there sooner. Hope? Not with this coach and GM.
01/31/2013 9:12AM
WGR Fan Poll
A loss and an embarrassment to go with it just sayin'. Gerbe to take Kaleta's place? Why not call up Tarnasky? The Bruins are already laughing at the Sabres having both shrimps in the lineup. Pathetic.
01/31/2013 9:49AM
You Tube
After reading all these comments you guys really got my blood boiling as I feel the same way - sick and tired of the same old, same old. All of you need to just click over to youtube and watch some of the old Rob Ray fights - It always makes me feel better.
01/31/2013 9:50AM
why is ruff still here
nice guy but you keep people around because they're winners not nice guys
01/31/2013 10:27AM
Bet the farm
Jeremy wrote "What happens if the Sabres miss the playoffs this year?" It's not IF but WHEN. Bet the farm on it.
01/31/2013 10:28AM
SOS - Same Old Sabres
I like Jeremy's article. I don't think the Sabres are going to make the playoffs, but Ott and Grigorenko give me hope that the Sabre brass will make additional positive moves in the near future. Look at the Harbaugh brothers for inspiration. One fires his OC in mid-season and the other benches his star QB. There's hope!
01/31/2013 10:48AM
good bye ruff and darcy
15 years of mediocre coaching. ruff and darcy have failed and the new owner was wrong in not firing both of these guys. you don't produce anywhere else in the nhl and you're gone. these 2 have done absolutely nothing that deserves contractextentions. ruff is not a good coach and he will probably ruin the careers of myers and the new kid with his head games. ruff & darcy must GO!!!
01/31/2013 11:34AM
Poppycock??
Your right. They do have the resources now and it is gunna take some time. It just drives folks up the wall because we have been waiting sooooo long.
01/31/2013 12:25PM
Many reasons to watch this team
If an 18-year-old Russian is the only reason you're interested in this team-- then I feel bad for you. Odds are against a breakout year for Grigorenko, but that's no reason not to be engaged and entertained. Scott and Ott bring a whole new angle to the Sabres, Foligno and Hodgson seem to be emerging, and Miller's ups and downs will always be entertaining (if frustrating) to watch. Hey, its not hope, but it is fun.
01/31/2013 1:20PM
Regier and Ruff don't know what they are doing
Thats the problem.
01/31/2013 2:19PM
I hate this Sabres
As long as Ruff is the coach, I won't change my opinion about this team.
01/31/2013 3:45PM
Coaching, plain and simple
Behind the bench and upstairs, they have to clean house!!! There's still a lot of talent on the ice. At least they got rid of Roy....all he did was figure skate out there. There is a few more names like Hecht, Ellis to name a couple off the top of my head....Ruff loves those guys.....their time is over lets give Tropp, McCormick, Adam a chance...payoff those contracts and move foward....as far as this year is going don't hold your breath making the playoffs.
01/31/2013 5:40PM
Everyone's an expert, apparently...
...and the only thing worse than a self-proclaiming expert, is one with insulting convictions. I'm with you, Jeremy.

Hey Jeremy, Maybe Vanek is that guy you are dreaming of
Leads the league in points w Pom in 4th
02/01/2013 1:48AM
Hey GR!!!!
You need to report the author of "Hmmm...which is more laughable" to the authorities as soon as possible. This man has serious mental derangement. This is no joking matter. Hi is the same person as he is referring to as "the "Team golf" chucklehead"!!!! He has devolved so far, he does not realize any longer when he is responding to his own previous posts!!! This is serious business GR. Especially when you are dealing with a BoB Seeger loving classic rocker. You know they are stupid, insane and OLD!!! This is how Connecticut stuff happens. You must report this moron to the authorities.
02/01/2013 10:49AM
re: Hey GR
Excuse me child but what the **** does being OLD have to do with anything? That's the problem with your generation, all of you anonymous internet teens and 20-somethings think that anything that happened before you all graced the world with your presence is irrelevant. I'm in my 30's and I can say to all of you kiddies...GROW UP, go get jobes and get off the computers.
02/02/2013 9:02AM
Sherrie White
Now that sounds better.
02/05/2013 11:00AM
AS AN OUT-SPOKEN ANTI-RUFF ADVOCATE...
...I gotta say, its sort of foolish referring to the last 14 years as stagnation, as you've done repeatedly. The Sabres aren’t the Bills. The last 14 years have included three conference finals, one trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, 3 first round exits, and a second round exit. Maybe you’d have a point if you limited the discussion to the last 5 years where the Sabres were definitely not a legitimate contender, but talking about the last 14 years as some dark chapter in Sabres history is ridiculous.
