NEW YORK (AP) - A federal mediator is back at work in the middle of NHL labor talks that hit a snag earlier this week.
Scot Beckenbaugh first talked with the players' association first on Saturday morning and is now meeting with both sides. The mediator walked back and forth between the headquarters for each side several times Friday as he tried to bridge the gap over a 12-hour span.
While Beckenbaugh never got the league and the union in the same room Friday, enough was accomplished to convince the sides to continue the process.
Meantime, TSN's Darren Dreger, one of several reporters monitoring and tweeting about the on-going labor dispute, tweeted "PA hotel is buzzingin anticipation. Down to minimal issues... but, still not done. And definition of "minimal" may differ."
Dreger then followed that message with the following tweet, "Issues still include cap in 13/14, max contract and variance. So "minimal" may not be best word unless significant movement from both."
Saturday is the 112th day of the lockout. The sides have less than a week to reach a new collective bargaining agreement to save what would likely be a 48-game hockey season.
