Gameday: 6-1 Montreal In 3rd



Montreal, QC (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Sabres had trouble mustering up any offense early against the Montreal Canadiens, and it cost them. The Habs trumped Buffalo 6-1 on Saturday afternoon from Bell Centre.

The game remained scoreless until Rene Bourque scored with just eight seconds to go in the opening period to give the Canadiens a 1-0 lead over Buffalo. Bourque was able to outmuscle Alexander Sulzer at the top of the crease, and get a stick on a puck sent to the front of the net. The goal came on the third power play of the stanza for the Habs.

Andrej Sekera returned to the Sabres bench midway through the first after going to the locker room following a shot block. It took more than ten minutes for Buffalo to record a shot on goal. Jason Pominville was able to get a shot through to Carey Price, while the Canadiens had 10 at that point. Montreal would end the first period with 15 total shots, while the Sabres mustered just 1.

Buffalo used sustained pressure in the opening moments of the second period to try and generate offense, but it was a bounce that went against the blue and gold to make it 2-0 Canadiens. Brendan Gallagher's pass across the crease was re-directed off of Christian Ehrhoff's stick and into the goal just two minutes into the middle frame. A pair of goals just twenty-eight second apart increased the home team's lead to 4-0 in the period. David Desharnais scored first, while Lars Eller crashed the net and recorded the other tally.

Bourque scored early in the third period to make the lead 5-0 Montreal. The goal was scored on Jhonas Enroth, who replaced Ryan Miller before the start of the period. Thomas Vanek gave the Sabres a glimmer of life less than two minutes later with a short handed goal. It was Vanek's seventh goal of the season. However, another power play goal for the Habs took away any doubt about the result. Desharnais' second goal of the game made the score 6-1 in favor of Montreal.

your Sabres are, out hussled, out muscled, out shot, out scored. The Team has been totally out classed, and pushed around the rink like a bunch of bums.I have been a fan since the expansion in 1969. My question to you is, what are you going to do about it? when will enough be enough Terry?What you have going on, isnt working, and peoples patience in Buffalo, is gone.

Please Finally buyout Drew Stafford's Contract or trade him!
Paul Hamilton has been saying he isn't ready to give up on him yet but please wake up already! Blah-blah-blah. Drew Stafford is useless!! 4 millon dollars and unless he is in a Contract year he is of no good to this team! Wide open net and he can't score. Trade him and 1 defenseman and get someone in here that can score a goal and plays with some heart.

nothing changes
even after what should have been a spring board game against Boston, this team continues to play the same as they have over the last 5 years. How many poor efforts and outright embarrassing outings does Pegula need to watch before ACTUAL changes occur in this organization? Same old pathetic Sabres. Can't wait to see them embarrass themselves tomorrow at home against another poor team. Let's go Florida!

Expected result.

call up McNabb, he has been a beast in the AHL since the lockout ended, great decisions, hitting everything and dropping the gloves when needed.. He was one of our best defensemen last year and how he is not playing over guys like Leopold and Sulzer is ajoke.. Typical Lindy Ruff garbage.

3 years ago we got knocked out in round 1, 2 years ago we were awful, last year again we were awful and we blamed injuries..so now we are healthy and we are still a sub 500 team?? Why, Why, Why is Lindy Ruff still our coach.. we are a laugh a laughing stock. Terry promised change and changed nothing, he gave this management team a boat load of cash and we got...worse???! This is truly the dumbest franchise in sport.

I think it has become obvious the team has stopped playing for their coach. The Bruin game was an aberration as they played for themselves against a hated rival.Darcy and Ted Black must make a move before this gets out of hand and the short season is lost. Or is the short season and camp going to be their excuse?

Dont fire your coach mid season?
LA Kings- fired their coach in December and won the cup.. If that was the Sabs management team we would give the old coach 14 more years. I hate that I am a fan of this organization, they do a great job of selling hope to the best fans in the NHL.. thanks for nothing Ted and Terry. sit back and watch us fail yet again. Lets go for an even 2 decades

Just awful!!
Well, then the Bruins was either a fluke or lucky. Today theSabres mustered 1 registered shot on goal in the 1st period and set the tone the rest of the way for some medicore divisional hockey game. I really think it's time to relief Lindy Ruff as coach. They played pond hocket again, took dumb penalties and maybe played desparate for about 2 minutes thru the 60 minute game. JUST PATHETIC AND INEXCUSABLE!!

As usaual --- WGR55 provides no personnel to provide feedback on comments until the next day when the daytime staff or whoever comes in. And then by then no one cares about what is said. And by the time you actually can read a comment its being taken off the site because it's old news. No wonder no one wants to play in this city. Check out some other city sites to see how real radio's operate would you. I live in Cape Cod and I can tell you Boston provides instant feedback -- on the Good and the bad. When are you going to realize this is not going to work. What you have is a very average to below average team who every once in awhile has a great game like they did against Boston. Darcy signed all these players. They are his choices. So if that is the case and You and Darcy believe in these players then the problem has to be coaching. Good players playing bad is a coaching problem. Bad players playing bad is on the GM. has to be one or the other. You just extended Darcys contract so you must feel he is the GM you want and believe in so that means Ruff has to go. So do something about it or the fans will finally stop buying tickets,

MIA Sabres owner Terry Pegula only shows up to give Lindy and Darcy contract extensions. There is no way MIA Terry is watching his team play or he'd fire Lindy and Darcy. The local media cheered on Pegula when he bought the Sabres but the MIA owner doesn't care about this team.

Bruins Game
The Bruins game was a fluke they handed the game to the Sabres with their poor defensive play. This team is a mess. There are too many guys making $3-5 million a year that suck! Myers, Erhoff, Stafford. Weber and McCormick were good yesterday everyone else stunk. How exactly do you get only one shot in a period? That is hard to do. They should start a complete changeover on this team. They are too small and not nearly physical enough to compete game in and game out. There coach has to go. When is someone going to be held accountable for this sad excuse for a team??????????????????

Why would you hire Rolston? He coaches the same system as Ruff. That would do no good. You need a coach like a John Muckler type who knows offense. A John Muckler type GM wouldn't be bad either. Idea: How about John Muckler himself??? Bring him back. I'm game.

This team is terrible to watch
Why, why, why Terry?? This is almost surreal that so little has changed. There is something about this coach & GM that convinces every owner to ignore the team's success & keep throwing extensions & money around. We have gone through 3 completely different ownerships in the last 15 years but nothing about this team ever changes. The criminals (Rigas), the saviour (Golisano) & the fan (Terry P.) have all been fooled by this GM & coach. No other team in any sport, ANY sport, has rewarded such below average results like the Sabres. NONE! 15 years of nothing, no playoffs 6 of the last 10 with 6 of the last 11 looking like a sure bet. WHY!?!?! This team is less talented now than ever under Darcy but fans just keep throwing their money at this team. I know, I grew up in Buffalo, there is nothing else to do in town but come on, why keep spending hundreds of dollars filling the arena to watch this team? As long as people are buying nothing will change. There is no other way to show this owner that we have had enough than to stop going to games, period. Just stop going, please! This year is already lost but we need serious, wholesale changes before next season. This team is terrible. The defense is out matched, slow & lost, Miller is giving up soft goals that C League guys could stop, they have one line that can score consistently & 3 below average checking lines. They are last in the league at face-offs proving even more that the needs at center are nowhere near being solved. Watch teams like the Rangers with the Richards, Nash, Gaborik line, everyone of those guys was a free agent in recent years & could be in Buffalo but instead we have Ott, Scott & Hodgson; not the same. I am a fan also Terry & if I bought this team there would be changes made. You are either not watching anymore or you are clueless. This would not happen with any other team in all the leagues, why does it have to be the team I follow? It is embarrassing!

These guys are brilliant masterminds. Architect's of deception. Once again the fans of Buffalo sports teams have been hoodwinked and bamboozled. Sold on the noble idea's that hard work, perseverance and faith will always carry through hard times. These two men have sold you hope year after year. Only to be let down year after year. How long will Sabre and Bills fans continue to be made fools and suckers? There is only one way to make your voices heard. Boycott these teams now! Don't buy anything that has to do with the Sabres and Bills, just stay away, it's as simple as that. But we all know fans of thee 2 most irrelevant teams in all of sport are not that smart and this will never happen. Sorry Buffalo sports fans, your teams are losers and so are you.

RE Muckler
It's an admirable sentiment, but the man is 78 years old. It would make more sense to hire an up-and-comer with a sound track-record: Phil Housley (having won WJ Gold) and Jon Cooper (Syracuse Crunch - Last year's Calder Cup winner w/ Norfolk; who coached his team to 28 consecutive wins and simply blew thru opponents in the playoffs) are two FINE candidates that are intelligent, groomed, work well with younger players, read the game brilliantly (and adjust) and are completely NHL-ready. Either one would surely spark the Sabres' bench and make sense of their on-ice play. But, better not take too long deciding - They'll be hired in a blink, once the season starts shaking out the losing coaches around the league.

listening to the commentator yesterday on WGR he says well the sabres are only 1 point out of 8th place..8th place a mediocure team that makes the playoffs..the NHL would put the sisters of the poor in the playoffs to make money. Against Florida
Through the first 40 minutes, Hecht had almost 2 more minutes of ice time than Vanek. I'm not sure what the 60 minute mark total was. How is this a coach anyone can still have faith in, when a 3rd line worthy player gets consistently elevated to being one of the top 6 forwards and gets more ice time than our best player? Lindy's love affair with a mediocre player is absurd. It suggests, to me, that he knows only one system and cannot tailor his coaching to the players on his team, but insists they tailor to his "style".
