Sabres Come Up Short in Ottawa 4-3



A Sabres rally came up short in Ottawa on Tuesday as the Senators hung on for a 4-3 victory. The loss marked Buffalo's third in a row, dropping their record to 3-6-1.

Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson opened the scoring 8:15 into the game on a shot from the point that appeared to deflect off Jason Pominville's stick. The lead didn't last long thanks to Tyler Ennis' third goal of the season, coming just 21 seconds later. Ennis backhanded a Drew Stafford rebound under the right pad of Craig Anderson, tying the score 1-1. Ottawa regained the lead a short time later when Chris Phillips planted a shot on Jhonas Enroth. Following a lost faceoff, Phillips fired one toward the Buffalo net. Enroth appeared to make the stop, but the puck trickled through his pads and over the goal line. Only 3:10 later, the Sens made it a 3-1 game on Daniel Alfredsson's second of the year.


Chris Neil made it 4-1 at the 8:12 mark of the second period, but the Sabres responded less than a minute later on Jordan Leopold's first. The Buffalo defenseman redirected a Jochen Hecht pass past Anderson to cut the deficit in half. The Sabres pulled to within a goal when Jason Pominville was credited with his sixth of the season. The goal was allowed to stand following a review to see if the Buffalo captain used his skate to kick the puck into the net. Buffalo came close to tying it up in the game's final minutes, but couldn't finish off a wild scrum in front of the Ottawa net.

Enroth finished with 20 saves on 24 shots, falling to 0-10-3 in his last 13 starts.

The Sabres return home to face the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday at First Niagara Center. Pregame gets underway on WGR at 6 p.m., followed by the 7 p.m. faceoff with Rick Jeanneret and Rob Ray on the Sabres Radio Network.

Although the Sabres looked better in this game than the last few, they are miles away from being a contender. In fact at this rate we should be prepared for yet another Ruff-era team to not make the playoffs. Hooray. C'mon Mr. Pegula, you're awfully quiet now, aren't you?

The WGR morning experts said this team will challenge for the Eastern Division title .... The WGR morning experts said Derek Roy was the cancer that held this team back. They also said that Steve Ott cured all the other problems on this team. So, how's that working out for you now?

These are Hamilton's words to Enroth after the Sens game: "iving up 3 in the first period just isn't good for the team". Of course never mentioning how Hodgson and that AHL DEFENSE gave away the puck all night!! CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT! Why doesn't Hamilton say that craap to Miller? Something like: "Hey Ryan, CH-CHOKING against Toronto, Montreal AND FLORIDA can't be too good for the team, right?" Because he knows what Miller would do... I know. were all going to blame the backup
But i still feel bad for Jhonas, such a nice guy. He at times has been a great tender. Come to think of it there are so many players on this team that have been very good at one time or another, but just cant keep it up for some reason. I hope he finds his game again if the team will give him another shot.

Gonna get worse
Call me crazy but in looking at the schedule for Feb. it's possible the Sabres will win only two games. In March it's even worse. The way they are going I'm predicting only 10-12 wins for the entire season.

I'm not trying to be rabid
but could we maybe fire someone please? This game is going to be an example of our season. Bad beginning, slow middle and furious ending rally that comes up short. I really don't want to do that. There's no one left I really dislike on this team, but it may be time to shuffle more than the lines.

10 Games into the season and we are toast
Will someone wake up Ruff and the sabres and let them know the season has started.Overpaid coach and gm having the owner in their back pocket. There is no motivation for either one of them to produce. They just coast all season long and use the injury excuse year after year. They are both laughing all the way to the bank.

The time is now
We've changed ownership, we've changed players, but we still end up with same results. There are 2 things that havent changed and thats Ruff and Regier. If the reason for the Sabres existance is to win the Stanley Cup, you better open your eyes Mr Pegula and get these 2 bums out of here. Especially before Lindys system destroys Grigorenko

Nothing will change until the #1 fan and owner becomes disillusioned with the product. This ain't gonna happen anytime soon because it would be admitting that the owner plan to "win the cup" is not working. Pegula being a successful business owner and self made man it will take a change in his assessment that can only come from within. All these fan and media critics (me included) will only solidify his will to continue and prove he's right.

I didn't know that Enroth's record for the last 13 games is 0-10-3. I like Enroth and he had a great streak of wins when he replaced Miller last year. However, I do not think that Enroth is the future backup goalie for the Sabres.

I can bet Pegula has this joke station on lockdown and in the contract it states " only nice things are to be said about the Sabres"

I'm sorry, did we play again last night? Must have missed it....
It's only 9 games into the season and I already find myself losing interest in watching my favorite team play my favorite sport by the first few minutes of period 2. The return of SMASH was really good last night...and the fact I was watching THAT over a Sabres game....my wife thought I had a stroke and couldn't remember how to use the remote. They stink for sure....but even worse is the way they stink andhow they lose. We've seen this same show for 5 years now and the show is not entertaing at all... so after a few minutes of veiwing a Sabres game, I turn to watch any other NHL Game on TV ....and then find I can enjoy hockey if it is played well. What happened to "the reson for the Buffalo Sabres existance...? Surely Mr Pegula doesn't think we still beleive that is his goal...does he? He is more emphatic about Darcy Doo-Wrong and Lindy Ain't-he-Ruff staying in their jobs... Pegulas actions point to a philosophy of "winning may come evenetualy, but Lindy and Darcy shall endure!" Maybe he should concentrate on the business that made him billions...he does that much better than owning a sports team supposedly focused on a Championship.

10 games = 20%
20% of the season is completed and we have hit bottom. That means we will be solid for 80% of the season! Normally they bottom out at 75% and have 25% to catch up. So glad we bottomed out early. We will make 6th!

What a mess!
Well 10 games into the season and we are one of the worst teams in the league. Our goaltending is average, our defense is a mess,and were a one line team with no power play.What happens? We start out 2-0 and then the roof collapses. Its like they never played the game before. We have changed ownership, we brought in players who gave us some much needed toughness,and after our first two games we look like the same team that has been here for the last 13 years. Well its time to take a look at the only thing that hasn't changed and thats the coach and GM. They are the only constants that have been here. They bring in players, name one that has made a difference? They bring up players through the so called system, name one that hasn't regressed.They make year end trades and with in a week that player is usually on the 4th line. What happens to these guys? Do they sudddenly forget how to play the game they have been playing all their lives? They can't check, win faceoffs, play defense, score goals, or stop the puck? How much of the game is coaching? We will never know because the only thing that hasn't changed is the coach and GM. Over the course of the next 5 games it is possible that we will have the worst record in the league with 1/3 of the season gone. Mr. Pagula not only will we be last in the league in offense and defense but you will be just another rich guy who bought a hockey team that is the laughing stock of the league.

Lindy won't get fired
The arena is still getting sold out. In that business model, please explain why you would change a thing? If this team isn't hoisting the cup - then what is the benefit of a playoff run? 14th place is ugly, but the money is rolling in. Do you think upper management really cares about what the fans have to say? Sorry everyone. I wish this weren't the truth. It's fair to ask what Pegula's real intention was for this team. Maybe he actually hates this city?

It's Obvious
It's obvious that Lindy has not impact on this team anymore. After years of mediocrity is has finally settled in the basement. Need a new coach, a new GM and a complete shakeup, just like the Bills. We can only hope and pray that it is for the better. Only time will tell.

and to a lesser extent the same with the GM. Just think people, even if Ruff were to be removed as coach he would simply be promoted to GM/coach. Lindy Ruff will NEVER leave the Buffalo Sabres organization! Can't say that you didn't know this was coming.

48 Game Season
Not a bad year to stink up the joint. It will only be for three months and then its over and we get a high draft pick just the same. And maybe just maybe Lindy gets fed up and retires or he gets relieved of his duties as coach and is moved to another position with the team. Which is how Pegula would handle it. An out and out firing of Ruff is a dream.

Re hamilton:
While i agree with the staement, for the most part i like paul but he has been waaaaay to critical of enroth, not making excuses but its not just Paul Hamilton, its everyone. People seem to forget all the 3 and 4 goal games miller has had. Heck even ruff has short term memory loss, when he talked about how the team gave up fewer chances after the boston game. Did he forget the 6-1 beatdown in montreal? And yeah hello your PLAYING FLORIDA giving up less is a given when your playing a poor team duh! People forget we are paying miller over 6 and a quarter a year to stop goals. Thats not an average goaltender wage. People talk about miller not being bad or him being ok. THATS NOT WHAT HES PAID TO BE!!! I for one am not giving up on enroth, i think he needs to go to the ahl get some confidence and play every game.. he doesnt get many starts here.

changing coaches
The most overated thing in sports is coaching. It comes down to the players and the lack of production from more then the first line and the poor goaltending Scotty Bowman could not win with this team. What have coaching changes done for the Bills Browns Cowboys ect.. I spoke with a former player that played for both Ruff and Nolan he said it was not ven close Ruff was actually a coach who ran practice and nolan had his assistants do it. The bigger joke is he got coach of the year. So listening to this banter about coaching is nausiating!!! I saw the team turning the corner tuesday Ennis line played better meyers played better the downfall was a terrible backup goalie with a starter that is inconsistent.

All things equal, how can other teams succeed?
Now that the sabres are on the same playing field financially with other top markets, how can they continue to descend? I continue to hear excuses as to confidence, systems, short season, new faces...how are other teams winning with the same challenges? Bottom line is we do not have any winners/leadership in the organization. it isn't a coincidence that when we lost drury and briere that we started losing. And what is up with Ruff's demeanor? Every interview is lethargic and the same old mono-tone responses. we need a fresh voice, regardless of whether Lindy is succeeding or not...it is time
