What has happened to Jhonas Enroth?

Faced with a compressed schedule, Lindy Ruff planned on giving Ryan Miller a night off 10 to 12 times this season.  The way Jhonas Enroth has played in his two starts may force Ruff to alter his plan. Although Miller’s play has tailed off after a strong start.

Enroth, who has faced long stretches on the bench when Miller has been healthy, didn’t have to wait very long this season to get his first start.  It came in the first week and the third game of the season.  But he was beaten five times on 37 shots in a loss at Carolina on January 24th. Perhaps that is why Ruff opted to go with Miller all last week despite the fact the Sabres played four games in six days.

Enroth did replace Miller for the third period of a blowout loss at Montreal last Saturday, giving up two goals on 11 shots,  and just three days after that, he got his second start of the season.

Enroth gave up four goals on just 24 shots and was tagged with the loss in Ottawa, stretching his personal winless streak to 13 games.  Enroth is 0-10-3 since a victory over Washington on November 26, 2011. His goals against average in that stretch is 3.47 and his save percentage is just .897.

Enroth’s decline is puzzling since he was the player who saved the Sabres season two years ago.  With Miller sidelined by injury, Enroth went 5-0-1 from March 6th to April 5th and a furious second half of the season rally got the Sabres into the playoffs.  Enroth ended 2010-2011  with an impressive 9-2-2 record.

Last season, the native of Sweden won his first six decisions and Lindy Ruff surprised many when he said his goaltending situation was more one-A and one-B rather than number one and number two.  Enroth was even given back to back starts in early November after Miller was pulled  in a home ice loss to Philadelphia.  Enroth won games against Calgary and Ottawa.

Just another
mismanaged player under the control of regier and ruff

Umm ok
This isn't inside the numbers at all... this is stating the numbers.

Same thing as what's happened to the rest of the team..........
Regier dumped Mitch Korn as goalie coach years ago, who was widely considered one of the best, because he was a Ted Nolan guy. All our goalies have struggled since staying at the top of their game consistently. Ruff and Regier don't like guys around them who know their stuff. Just about every assistant coach under Ruff has never coached anywhere else before in any capacity. James Patrick and Kevin Adams are two prime examples. Maybe it's considered a step backwards, but Dineen and Cunneyworth did good jobs in the minors but were never brought up to assist on the Sabres bench. Why has Darcy never had an assistant GM like other teams ? These are things that seem to escape attention.

Does someone have to spell it out?

What has happened to Ryan Miller?
What about that? That's what you should be writing. Stop picking on Enroth. How often does he play? Rotting on the bench is what happened to him is a solid answer. Lindy Ruff is the blame for that. Ruff never was good at handling his goaltenders. Even Hamilton has said that. You can be an idiot sometimes Simon. Just blame the whole thing on Enroth and say Mister Softee is great. Mister Softee has stunk as far as I'm concerned.

Lindy Ruff's Alternate Plan
I don't know the rules, but if the Sabres can, they need to send Enroth down to the AHL and bring up someone from the farm. As evidenced by the last 13 games that Enroth has been in goal (0-10-3 record) it really can't get any worse trying another goaltender.

Same Old - Same Old
Same problem as with every other back-up Lindy has had. A bad game and he sits for far too long, making him not only rusty but also destroying his confidence. This is really not a different problem than the one Myers or a number of other underperformers has. They are too afraid of making the mistake that brings down the wrath of Ruff. This stunts their natural talents, tendencies and reactions and immobilizes them into shells of what they were when they first joined the Sabres roster. Yet the favorites like Hecht, the 0.2 points per game man (and -3 as well) continue to log big minutes. Sorry, Lindy. Loved your tough play back in the day and liked good stretches of your 1st decade as coach, but it's time to go. Same recurrent problems for the last five plus seasons and a team that doesn't seem to want to play for you anymore. - JC

Ruff
Whats wrong with Enroth look up Ruff
02/07/2013 5:01PM
that's life
frank sinatra says it best got to keep him for at least this year till you decide to move the russian goalie up who is playing phenomenal.
02/07/2013 6:14PM
I agree with Hamilton....
the kid can't play - at least not now. Send him to Rochester to get his confidence back.
02/08/2013 12:21AM
Leave
Jhonas Enroth alone, actually send him down to the ahl and get some confidence, see luke adam. Miller hasnt played any better this year. Tonight mr.softee records 22-25 saves (regulation) with .875 average. Multiple 4 goal games this year. write about that! Hes our "backbone" hes our elite. But he will just get a pass like every other night he fails to perform up to his 6.25 mill contract
02/08/2013 3:55PM
Miller
SUX! He will always be Mr Softee getting 6.25 mill for being an average goalie. Below average for the moment, but never will be above average. He wouldn't win a cup with any team. Dump his a$$. He SUX!
02/09/2013 5:36AM
Bring up......
Leggio from Rochester, give him a shot, Enroth has played pretty bad the better part of two seasons. Leggio in Rochester has been on fire this year!
02/09/2013 5:38AM
How About....
Bring up Leggio from Rochester, playing lights out this year
02/09/2013 7:14PM
Amazing
Our "D" has stunk up the arena, and you guys are blaming Ruff?
