Bills Will Not Re-Sign WR Donald Jones

Thursday morning, it looked like the Bills were working on re-signing WR Donald Jones. By the end of the day, it was evident that is no longer the case. The Bills have announced they will not re-sign the veteran.

This is the official notice sent out by the team:

BILLS WILL NOT TENDER WR JONES

Orchard Park, NY – The Buffalo Bills today announced that the team will not tender Donald Jones, making the wide receiver available when the NFL free agency period begins on March 12th.

Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said, “We have made the decision not to re-sign Donald. We’re going in a different direction and this move today gives Donald the opportunity to catch on with another team early on in the process. We thank him for his years with our organization and wish him the best in the future.”

WGR 550 learned that the two sides were in talks for an extension. Those talks did not lead to a contract for Jones.

Shortly after Jones tweeted:
-Dajones19Thanks for everything #billsmafia. My three years there was great I learned a lot.I had great times with my teammates.Met a lot of great ppl
and
-Dajones19 Now it's time for me and my family to move forward.

Wise move.....
nice guy, but way too soft for the NFL.

Good Choice
Now let's get some real talented WR's who are big and can catch in traffic

Heartbreaker.

Finally a move in the right direction
I like Donald Jones, but you know what; He's a third string receiver at best. Time to change things up. I like this move. We have been using 3rd string players way to long. Time to get some 1st rate guys in here. I hope Marrone kicks some aZZ and drafts a WR. And Stevie, I hope you're ready to start your workout routine, because a winning team makes an effort.

this is good
It forces them to get someone better!

Good
Jones was another example of the Bills "settling" for a player to start for two years that would have likely not made most teams roster. Let's hope this is the beginning of a necessary purge of guys who have been just good enough to get you beat week in and week out. Add to Jones the names Kelsay, Wilson, Moats, Martin, Brad Smith, Caussin Fitzpatrick and Thigpen before the first OTA and it will make for a better summer/fall. It may not add up to more wins in '13 as new players learn their roles but will give us alot brighter outlook for the future.

draft or free agency
I wonder who the Bills have in mind to pursue in Free Agency. I don't think they would've released Jones unless they had a target or two in Free Agency. I'm sure they'll be drafting a wide receiver in the first or second round of the draft too.

Has Fitzpatrick been cut yet???
That's all I care about at this point.
02/08/2013 11:01AM
Get rid of Tim Connolly Nelson too...
and cut Fitzpatrick after that.

Re: Next announcement :
I am assuming that you do not work for the bills, therefore you do not know if they are pursuing Vick or not. Clayton is a well respected insider. If he says they are interested, then I would take it to the bank. He never said how interested. If I have achoice of Vick or Fitz, I choose Vick every single time. He has much more talent, and with a good line he could be pretty good. Get Vick for peanuts if the eagles cut him, release Fitz and draft a QB.

Da!
Why do you need Wide receivers whey you do not have a Q B that is able to throw the Ball! Three ring Circus!
02/08/2013 5:05PM
no idea
Jones showed promise, but its hard to tell who is a decent receiver with Fitz throwing off the mark airballs at everyone. David Lee's work as QB coach destroyed Fitz's already marginal arm.

david nelson
would like to see us get a big time WR and throw david nelson back into the mix... he's 6'5" and i really thought he was improving his game before he got hurt. he always seemed to come up with clutch 3rd down catches and wasn't afraid of going over the middle.
