Bills Release Barnett and Wilson

The Buffalo Bills have officially announced that they have released S George Wilson and LB Nick Barnett.

On his Twitter account, Barnett said, "I was told, I'll be released today by the Buffalo Bills. Thanks to all of the great fans and friends I have met in Western New York. It was truly a pleasure being a part of that organization and culture. Very unfortunate we didn't get the Bills to the playoffs but, I know you guys have many successful years in front of you."

Wilson and Barnett are two leaders on the defense. Wilson was the Bills defensive captain and their NFLPA representative. Barnett started all 16 games at middle linebacker and registered 112 tackles and 2 sacks.

The Bills released this statement:

Orchard Park, NY - The Buffalo Bills today announced that the team has released LB Nick Barnett and SS George Wilson.
 
Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said, “Moves like the ones we’ve made today are never easy, but we have to do what’s best for our team and keep moving forward. We’ve got some good young players on our roster who we feel are ready to take the next step and they will now have the opportunity to do so. We thank both Nick and George for everything they’ve given the Bills organization and wish them nothing but the best for the future.”

Good to see someone is alive at One Bills Drive during the offseason, and not afraid to cut loose these kinds of mediocre players that have been dragging this team down for over a decade. Might as well take a chance on someone better because it couldn't be any worse finishing 6-10 or 7-9 every year. PS - HEY BUDDY...THANKS FOR PASSING ON KAEPERNICK TWICE IN THE 2011 DRAFT, WHAT A BUM HE IS. GOOD TO KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE SCOUTING OUR NEXT FRANCHISE QB WITH YOUR GREAT EVALUATION SKILLS THAT LED YOU TO PASS ON KAEPERNICK.

who is going to fill in there spots?
well i am a little surprised with george wilson going as most fans prob. are more upset about barnett being cut. We dont have a saftey opposite Byrd and we dont have depth at safety either I really thought that one of the two would find a niche in the new scheme oh well

Able to understand the move.
This means that Byrd is going to be locked up, and that we are going to invest heavily in the linebacker position through both the draft and free agency. Alec Ogletree here we come!

EXCELLENT NEWS!! MARRONE BEATING THE MEDIOCRITY OUT OF THIS TOWN!!!
WOW!! This is really starting to look and feel really good. Bill Parcells used to go to a new team and immediately CUT all the STIFFS first and replace them with HUNGRY smart players! I know Bellichick isn't be happy but...Have we finally found a REAL MAN to run a franchise in Buffalo!!??? George Wilson was an ABSOLUTE JOKE on this team for years and Barnett was washed up 2 years ago! These moves also prove that Marrone had his eyes and ears in the NFL while in Syracuse,... very impressive! These moves are like a breath of fresh air after YEARS of endless mediocrity in tis town!! Hey Coach Marrone...Please don't stop, we've got alot of trash on this football team yet to be thrown out! More Examples... Kelsay, McGee.... Money?
Is this about saving money or about making them a better team? I hope the later. Hopefully Kelsay and Fitz are next. All I know is if Fitz is the starter next year I will not support the team until he is not. They need to go out and get a free agent q.b.Draft a q.b. and let him sit for a yr or 2 and see what the free agent can do. I'm so sick of this team spinning it's wheels. Marrone you better not start Fitz or a lot of fans will be mad.

Started all 16 games and was our only decent linebacker. No wonder why the Bills have not made the playoffs since 1999. What a joke!

Good
Good start on the required defensive housecleaning this team needs. Wilson and Barnett were both stand up guys here, but also just good enough to get you beat each week. Now let's add to this scrapheap the names Kelsay, Morrison, Moats on the defensive side and Martin, Fitz, Pigpen and a few others to go along with the recently departed Donald Jones on the "O" side and get busy replacing them with upgrades via free agency and the draft. Thumbs up so far on Marrone from here.

George is a great story but just an ok safety
George Wilson was one of the better stories out of the Juron era but his drops this past season alone cost us two games. We have other players that must get on the field.I wish him well

That's Show Biz?
Wilson was a good player but could not catch a ball as a receiver let alone defensive back- Barnett? he was a character guy but somehow never played as he did in Green Bay- le's hope the new DC of the Bills can put together the right players for adefense that will earn respect? there are alot more players to be cut so maybe the Bills will find a few?

Signs to come
As a Bears fan, I don't have alliances to this team but I do want to see the Bills do well. I always liked Wilson on this team, Barnett I feel was a Band-Aid to help out. I hope there is more of these kind of changes and they cut Fitzpatrick. As for Kapernick, and Russell Wilson, fans are always saying "Ohhhh we could have had them!!" But people must also look at the team and the coaching around them. Would they have been just as good on the Bills, maybe maybe not. All I know that Fitzpatrick should be the next to go and hopefully for the Bills to have success next season.

Bart Scott or/and Calvin Pace to the Bills
Look for the Bills to pick up Bart Scott or/and Pace at a reduced price. Jets will cut them soon. George Wilson was ineffective. He dropped 2 sure interceptions that could of won 2 games for us. He couldn't tackle or cover. Dump him. Look for more moves like these. Bills are on the right track.

Fitz & Kelsay
You cant just cut these two to slice the "fat". Kelsay is a good depth player, just not a starter. Fitz would be a good backup as long as we didnt pay him as much as we have already. I suspect they both may still be here next year

Completions on 86% of passes thrown his way. Qbs had a 129 rating when throwing his way. Change was needed.

Keep it up
Wilson was 32 and saves $2.9M and Barnett was also 32 and saves another $3M. Both are well past their primes and while they may have another "good" year left, it would be another year of 2 good games and the rest of the 14 they disappear. They were merely average and this was necessary to get younger, faster and better.

Cuts
Did the Bills cut Nick and George because they were 2 of the few who were healthy enough to play every game last year? Or did they cut them because they were team leaders. I dont get it. I suppose Searcy could replace Wilson at strong safety - but who isgonna play linebacker now? The Bills dont have a linebacker worth a darn.

dont get it. cut the wrong guys. two vocal leaders gone. Buddy Nix another bone head move... again with the 'we got young guys ready to fill in"... Buddy you cant fill in leadership and captians with young kids all the time. I sure hope ANALYTICS is working. Aaron Williams aint lookin too good either. Keep getting rid of leaders for kids and you get no where.
