The Sabres' real reason for existence: You

As the Sabres continue to glide their way to another season of mediocrity, fans are harkening back to Terry Pegula's mountaintop proclamation from February 22, 2011, asking each other what he really meant.

"Starting today, the Buffalo Sabres' reason for existence is to win a Stanley Cup."

I've been talking about this line so much lately that today I didn't even need to look up the exact wording. I know there's no "sole" in the quote. I know it's a, not the.

Somebody thought so much of the statement last fall to pay $600 for it plastered on a sign that had been displayed in the Sabres' locker room. Fans can remember where they were when he said it, how wildly different it felt for a Buffalo man to talk in these big-time terms. It was an historic day.

There is another point to consider though when talking about Pegula's famous announcement.

We've been scrutinizing this statement in terms of whether or not Pegula was sincere, or serious, or naive in saying what he said. And that's an interesting conversation for sure.

But step back a piece and ask yourself instead whether or not what Pegula said is true -- not on the basis of whether or not the Sabres are good but rather what the purpose of pro sports teams really is.

A pro team's two main reasons for existence are not to win championships. They exist to entertain fans and make money. Within that, championships can and should be the goal. But fans are the reason pro sports teams exist. Lots of teams -- for starters, ours -- have never won championships. Are their existences meaningless? Have their entire histories been a waste? No.

Without fans willing to give our time and money, they wouldn't even have these games. Then you can go and win all the championships you want and no one will know or care.

We love and support our teams like crazy but they've never won any championships so what does that say about the true, intrinsic value of championships?

The most important thing for the Sabres to achieve is not to win games exactly, it's to win over peoples' hearts. Yes, winning games goes a long way here. But it doesn't go all the way. Losing teams can be popular (see 1995-96), and winning teams can be unloved (see 2009-10).

All this, to me, is a vitally important aspect of any Sabres analysis. They are in business for our entertainment. We give them money and they play hockey games, win or lose. They've lost plenty and won little through the years yet they have a huge legion of fans. Why? For many reasons. Because pro hockey is fun to watch. Because it bonds us as a community. Because it gives us all, collectively, something to get behind. Because once in a while you catch a puck. Because it's fun to talk about.

Because it makes Buffalo a better place in which to live.

And now to the reason you bothered to read this in the first place...

The Sabres shouldn't change out their coach and general manager merely because they've had an extraordinary 16 years to win a Cup and haven't done so. They should do it because of that, AND because so many fans want it. They should do it because a sports team's real main reason for existence is to be supported by its fans, and in the case of the Buffalo Sabres the fans are fed up.

The game last Thursday with Montreal was so telling for this. The season is still young, and the Sabres' record at the time was not terrible. The game wasn't terrible either -- 4-3 Montreal in the closing minutes. And yet as the clock ticked down many fans booed the team, and many other fans began to leave.

When this is happening in such an early-season game against a popular opponent with the score close, take a hint. People don't believe in your team -- or, for that matter, like it very much.

These are people that spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year on you. If they don't believe in you, who should?

Another way to look at this is through ticket sales, although it's not as easily cut and dried. Fans lately have been pointing out that tickets have been tough to re-sell. When the team was hot six and seven years ago, the secondary market was ablaze yet many season-ticket holders opted instead to forgo monster profits and attend the games. Now, many of these same people are hoping to break even.

Anything to get out of having to sit there, I guess.

I want a championship as much as most people do. But if they compete, from the players to the front office, and don't lead me to question their level of commitment, I'll get by even if they don't win it all. I've made it this far and so have you. I'm glad they exist, even in their tepid state.

Their true reason for existence is us. If they want to achieve the owner's mission statement they don't have to win the Stanley Cup.

All they have to do is listen.

Where is the accountability
It is a joke that R&R are not held accountable in their jobs. Fans just want to see that all aspects of the organization are being evaluated and not just the players. He also stated that it was a 3 year process. Well it is in year 3 and they are not even close to looking like a cup contender. As I write this Hockey hotline is saying their normal "this team can make a run and get in" It is utterly hilarious to hear this year in year out. I really am starting to think we were better off with Quinn and Tom G.
02/12/2013 11:33AM
Nice!
Well said Schopp. Well said. The tenure of our coach and GM have become an embarrassment in the NHL. Hockey heaven is known for rewarding mediocrity.
02/12/2013 11:40AM
They wont listen
Pegula has been brainwashed into believing Darcy and Lindy are the greatest. Im afraid it will take alot of losing for at least four or five years for that to change. Sad.
02/12/2013 11:49AM
wow
actually well said
02/12/2013 11:55AM
Great post!!!
All in on this one
02/12/2013 11:56AM
You can buy off PA Politicians , but you can't buy off an NHL Stanley Cup
The Sabres have not improved since Terry bought the team. If he really care about the fans, than make the effort to change the GM and Coach. This is not rocket science.

Outstanding Commentary!
The championship is not there yet. So next consideration should be... Is the team entertaining to watch?? Overall, I don't think so. Even when they win (i.e. see recent Isles and Habs game)... more often than not the game itself was... 'meh' entertainment. Great commentary!
02/12/2013 12:07PM
Nice Article
To me, winning the Cup has never been the priority for me to continue being a Sabres fan. The entertainment I receive by following and watching the team for the past 40 seasons as they strive each year to win it all the reward I need. In addition, unlike everyone else it seems, I respect the work Darcy and Lindy have done to build this franchise in spite of the fact they have never won the Cup. I tend to remember and focus on the great moments this franchise has provided us fans over the years and there have been plenty instead of dwelling on the negative.
02/12/2013 12:10PM
nice read
could not have said it any better.. hope ted black sees it and relays it to pegula. pegula has been a colossal disappointment.
02/12/2013 12:15PM
You???
It doesn't seem to matter to Mr Pegula what the fans are thinking or think what should be done here. The fans recommendations for the removal of Regier and Ruff is being ignored. The fans calls for trades is being ignored. All is the owner is interested in is a full FNC and thats it and don't care what the fans are saying. A bill board on the I-90 wouldn't even phase him. This radio station won't even get tough when Regier, Ruff, and Ted Black come on the air. With every poor performance that happens it seems that the calls for change gets defended against it by the hosts as if change is not needed when fans voice opinions. The complaints on certain players by fans remain in the lineup. The real reason for existence is to be a joke and that is exactly what it is. It don't matter from the top on down what the fans say. They are going to do what they are going to do until empty seats get noticed and fans stop buying the tickets. Just maybe that will be the wake up call, but I'm not counting on that.
02/12/2013 12:21PM
Listen??
To who? The fans? The Media? Ha! You're Joking right? Fans lately have been pointing out that tickets have been tough to re-sell - What fans? How many? Isnt a better gauge ATTENDANCE?! You change coaches when you have the talent and dont have the wins. Not the case. Go watch a Detroit Redwings game. Thats talent!! Watch vancouver- TALENT! Sabres have 1 line! And its not on Darcy - When you live under financial oppression and then finally come out the rest of the league is not going to just give you your talent. You need free agents. MOST IMPORTANTLY - Its crappy Buffalo. Two place free agents dont want to go - Edmonton and Buffalo. Change your city first. Get the talent - then judge.
02/12/2013 12:27PM
Good Article !
The reason for the existence of this franshise starts and stops with us. If not for us,there would not be a team in Buffalo. If the tickets do not sell and season tickets plummet, there would be no profit.be no fans who actually live and die with this organization. i know people who are close to me who are season ticket holders. People who work week to week for a paycheck and who put aside a certain amount every week so they can have season tickets and go to games and support the Sabres. If we the fans who support them yr in and yr out go thru the struggles to do this, why shldnt we hold the owner and upper management accountable for whats on the ice?? If you ask me,the fans are the owners, which brings me to the next question. Why hasn`t Pegula stepped up and address this situation? If hes a true fan like he says he is,he will not stand pat and do nothing.Changes need to be made, period. I wld rather have a owner who sticks his neck out and does something even if it means getting worse. Atleast there would be something new to look at and have some hope, even if it takes a few yrs. Good teams make tough decesions, they do not stand pat and do nothing!!!. Look at the Kings and the Bruins ! enough said !!!
02/12/2013 12:27PM
Do not agree!
I do not agree with this at all, but mostly I abhor all these people that keep thinking that they know nore about how to win hockey games than people who have done it their whole life. All thesefans who call for people to be replaced, do not know what they are talking about, and if they don't like it, then stop watching! Mike, you read the "Only reason for existence" wrong. What he was saying was "I don't care if the team makes money, the team's existence is not to make money, I will spend what it takes". He has been doing that, but to expect immediate results is ludicrous. BE PATIENT! It takes time! I know you'll say "they've had 15 years with no results" Poppycock!!! They did not have the money! Now because they do you expect them to do it in one year? Give me a break! Thank God that Terry doesn't listen to all theses "expert" fans who say get rid of Darcy & Lindy and listens to the real experts who tell him to keep them! :-)

The lockout once again made many fans who support (and spend money on) the Sabres question their reasons for doing so. Despite that fact, post-lockout Buffalo fans overall have been great- still watching games, buying tickets, etc. Give us some reason for optimism! Give us a team that is fun to root for again! And yes, give us some new leadership so we can believe that it's NOT ok to underachieve and miss the playoffs again! Lindy may be a good man, a good coach, a fixture in the community, but he's gotta go.
02/12/2013 12:55PM
Keeping the faith ...
Schopp, you are a chronic complainer. The Sabres will win the Stanley Cup with Lindy Ruff as coach and you can whine about something else. It may not be this year, but it will happen. Terry Pegula is a visionary. He would not be a multi-billionaire if he wasn't. Look at the BIG picture. As a fan, you should exude confidence as well as patience. The players are human beings, every one of them. Regardless of who we have behind the bench, the message will always become stale, especially when the team is losing or in a slump. It is up to the players to make it happen. What do you think Mike Babcock from Detroit says to his plyers that is so different than what Linday Ruff says to his ? The differences are minimal, I assure you, but the belief is there for the players. Faith is believing even when there is no proof. This is why Detroit is a perennial playoff team. It's not the coach, it's the fact that the players are confident and believe they can get the job done, year in and year out. Do we really believe that Dan Bylsma is a better coach than Lindy Ruff, or is it simply because they have Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Letang, Orpik & Fleury on their roster ? The Sabres are 1 move away from being contenders. My hope is that they figure out how to dump Stafford and pick up Corry Perry from Anaheim. We need a proven 50 goal scorer who has won the Cup and Perry fits the bill. His contact expires after this season and it will be hard for the Ducks to retain him. At the same time, the Ducks are hurting for D, so a package deal that sends Stafford and Brennan and to Anaheim for Perry works for me. GO SABRES !! I will keep the faith whilst Shopp keeps hating.

@SabreAnalyst
I don't always with Mike but he is right on the money here. I also don't usually get emotional about the Sabres. I love them and hope they succeed, but I try to study the game like a science and art combined. Very difficult to do that while you're a fan of the team, especially when they are doing very well or very poorly. (Did you notice the orga$ms on the part of TSN and RDS writers and announcers when the Leafs bashed the Flyers last night?) When I look at the art, I have seen nothing creative or new, nothing that makes me dazzled. When I look at the science it is a mess. You can't think creatively when the basics are so cumbersome to achieve. The basics of setting up at home, losing the second pass, no neutral zone control, zero puck support, inability to overcome fatigue... the list goes on. There is much to sort out for Lindy and almost no time to do it. But the numbers speak the story right now. For those of you thinking about a playoff run, we're in trouble, folks. If we lose tonight we should start looking at the draft market instead of the box score.
02/12/2013 1:32PM
You Say More Than You Know
It is true. I don't have to have a champion team to be satisfied. I think back to the 70's & early 80's and no one held up a championship banner. In fact the Sabres early exit from the playoffs came about at the hands of the Islander's, Bruins, or Flyers as annually as the first robin to appear in the spring. But there is a difference to then as to now. The Sabre's had a pride that isn't in most of our recent teams. And those teams were held in such high esteem. Even though those teams may get beat, the opposing teams would be bloodied doing it. Those teams bled Blue and Gold. Everyone: Perrault, Martin, Robert, Spencer,Korab, Gare, Schoenfeld, etc. all did. And the coaches and GM (Punch) did too. And even though they made moves that the fans didn't always appreciate they bled blue and gold too. Funny, I hear how dead the arena is on most game nights and at the Aud the chants of Let's Go Buffalo, One... Two.. Three.. We Want ...(Number of Goal), Hey, Seymour...(Fill in what ever mesage you wanted to send Knox) would erupt without provocation. Sometimes drowning out the PA. Yeah, i was happiest with those teams. A championship would have just added to the experience.
02/12/2013 1:34PM
Disagree
There's another professional Buffalo sports team that's changed out their coach and gm every three years...how has that worked out for them? Bills?...Bueller? Pegula is the best owner Buffalo has had, Rome wasn't built overnight, be patient.

Terry the "Visionary" is Flawed
Just because Terry Pegula made billions fracking does not make him a "visionary." It's remarkable that persons living in a city that has seen "entrepreneurs" like Terry Pegula come-in, make fortunes on the backs of hard-working Buffalonians, and then abandon the city and their rusting factories and their unemployed employees would say that Pegula is a "visionary." He is nothing more than a slick money-man who got lucky-- he stumbled upon a new technique to extract natural gas, he polluted and destroyed the environment, and when he made his money, he cashed-out and ran out of town. The Sabres are his vanity-hobby, and how he runs his hobby (incompetently) proves he is not "visionary," and that he got lucky in making his money. Pegula is just like all his other tax-evading and socially/politically/environmentally irresponsible entrepreneur peers-- flawed.
02/12/2013 2:02PM
be patient?
Be Patient for how long? How many years do you suggest we wait before you can say it's not working and you need to get rid of Ruff and Regier??
02/12/2013 2:12PM
The Sabres Sole Reason for Existence...
...is to win with Lindy Ruff.
02/12/2013 2:33PM
Pegula has Buffalo's Best Interests in Mind
Give the Wings, Bruins and even recently the Blackhawks their dues, but here is a look at last Stanley Cup appearances by the other “Original Six” teams. Buffalo in 1998-99 has been to the Cup Finals more recently than these hallowed and big spending teams: 1993-94 N.Y. Rangers 1992-93 Montreal 1966-67 Toronto I would love more than anything to have this team win a Cup, but crushing Pegula is just stupid. This is a shortened season after “another” lockout. Pulling the plug on a GM and coach now is not really in the best interest of the team. Too short of a season to not play it out until the end of this year. Another thing I never hear – who do you replace these guys with? At last check, this is not the NFL with a “hot” coordinator or college coach in the waiting. Good GMs are kept by team. There is a reason the guys out there are ex-GMs and personnel guys. It is not like the cupboard has been bare with R&R…see Vanek this season and Miller Vezina season in 2009-10. And, if not for injuries, the Sabres might have took the Cup in 2005-06 instead of the Canes.
02/12/2013 2:35PM
be patient!!!!!!
you have to be kidding or work for the sabres as some gofer!it is shameful to come in here on the proverbial high horse and subject the fanbase to the same regier nonsense and ineffectual ruff coaching.. pegula is taking blood money

We have many reasons of existence in Buffalo like snow ...
We have many reasons of existence in Buffalo like snow ... I can easily stand it when folks from other big cities mock Buffalo for its weather. But I can't stand it when thinking we are a seconadary class city, including the two sports teams. Just can't stand this lack of self esteem as a city and community. I am not proud living in Buffalo bc of these two teams, especially Sabres. The Sabres are just a shame.
02/12/2013 2:43PM
Great Article
I am an original Sabres season ticket holder and fully agree with Mike. In the old days, if the team was bad or boring or the coach or the GM did not succeed, we would look forward to and often got needed changes. Now, this club has been mediocre for years and Pegula rewards mediocrity by extending Ruff last year and Regier even PRIOR to the season (could at least wait to evaluate the season). There is no hope for the fans of any management changes. Pegula is a wide-eyed fan of R&R and has basically given them lifetime contracts no matter what the results. It's a pathetic way to run a business not holding people accountable. There will be no Stanley Cup in Buffalo until we have an owner who is capable of making the hard decisions without worrying that he might offend R&R

Re: Terry the "Visionary" is Flawed WHOA! OK so lets talk politics then... Polluted and destroyed the env? Not sure about that. There are many southerners that think Buffalonians and other "New Yorkers" are bringing their union mentality and lack of free-enterprise politics to the south and creating a high-tax, high govt system that didnt work in NY, and continues to drag the south down. Taxes in southern states are at an all-time high and legislators are quietly pushing for unions. Texas, TN, NC, SC, GA... all are "suffering" the consequences of the "northern invasion" that is now "insidiously creating in the south everything that northerners have left the north for". Just making a counter-point from my southern friends. MY POINT: I, personally like to see ANY effort made to make Buffalo a better, less economically deprived place. I'm not happy with Pegs right now but your post is way over the top.
02/12/2013 3:06PM
The system doesn't work...
I agree with this article. We keep hearing the guys need to keep to the "system", well after 16 years, the system isn't working. It's time for a change! I like Lindy, but his coaching style is stale, and the players show their lack of respect for him. Enough is enough. The Bills were a different thing, the constant change of coach was due to hiring the wrong guys, if the Sabres make the right coaching decision, it would be a whole new team.
02/12/2013 3:15PM
Buffalo is not a Billionaire's Property
Terry Pegula may have purchased the Buffalo Sabres, but he does not own the city of Buffalo. Hence, as long as the "Sabres" play in Buffalo and they rely on Buffalonians to be their fan base, Terry Pegula does not have a monopoly over running the Buffalo Sabres. He SHARES the running of the Sabres with the citizens of Buffalo. The fans have just as much of a voice in running this team as he does. If Terry wants to have a monopoly over running this team and ignore the people of Buffalo, he needs to change the name of the team to the Pegula Sabres, and he needs to move the team to some place called Pegullaville where the team can play in front of a crowd composed of him, his family and friends, and all the other sycophants who keep whispering in Terry's ear what kind of "genius" and "visionary" he is.
02/12/2013 3:18PM
Re: Do not agree!
You obviously don't know what you're talking about. First, the Sabres under Golisano spent a lot of money on players up to the cap. The budget was NOT the issue. So many people have that wrong, including you. Secondly, even if the budget was a factor, did Anaheim, Carolina, Tampa Bay, etc. have the biggest budgets when they won their Stanley Cups??? NO! Yet, their GMs and coaches found a way. To act as if Lindy and Darcy have been chained for 14 years before Pegula is idiotic and ignorant. You're basically admitting that these guys are not competent enough to win unless they have an owner that will pay any amount for anything. Lots of GMs and coaches do not have that luxury and win anyway. Hopefully the Sabres will find people like this to replace Lindy and Darcy soon.
02/12/2013 3:59PM
Potentially a terrible owner
I say potentially because Pegula is not there yet...but he is sitting on the knife's edge. This season is Pegula's crossroads. Either he makes a big move to show the fans he's committed and really, REALLY cares deep down and this can be either getting a real superstar player or getting a new GM and coach...or they continue to flounder, falter and fail and miss the playoffs again and absolutely nothing will change. If that happens and nothing is done either with Regier, Ruff or players he can correctly be labled a gigantic farce and terrible owner. Why? It is so because of what he said. You cannot shoot your mouth off in that press conference 2 years ago about sole existences and players dying to come play for the Buffalo Sabres because they have the best owner bar none in the NHL...and have the timid, tepid, pathetic displays that this team has had since Pegula took over. If that is the case he is a liar, insincere and just an all out farce and fraud because he talked so big. Now he can still change that perception but the time is running out. His grace period as a new owner is rapidly expiring. Tom Golisano could potentially be viewed as the better owner in the long run. Again why? It could be that way because at least Tom G was a straight shooter. He at least acknowledged it was about the bottom line and didn't pull any punches. Tom G didn't falsely raise expectations with blabber and BS. Pegula is setting himself and the entire organization up to fall off a 10,000 foot cliff. They are headed right now 100 mph towards that cliff. Please Mr. Pegula wake up and see the error of your ways over the last 2 years and change this now, while there is still time!!!
02/12/2013 4:01PM
Pretzel Logic...
You're wrong,Buffalo is "Championship Challenged" don't tell us that we don't want it. After Nolan got railroaded I didn't give R&R one year before they got "found out" and were gone.Hasek put the lipstick on this pig and saved them both.In a perfect world they would have both been run out of town for having the best goalie ever and failing to win it all.And yet they still exist.
02/12/2013 4:01PM
And you get paid for this...
This is the most pointless piece of dribble I've had the displeasure of reading lately. I used to be a fan and supporter of wgr and the staff there. It's really down to a handful of insightful smart people on your staff.I used to read the Buffalo News for good stories. They suck now! And now you guys suck! You wouldn't know a puck from a doughnut! Sorry to say I'll be turning off your station. You guys have lost it!
02/12/2013 4:07PM
Not sure what people aren't understanding here.
Using the "Keep It Simple Stupid" logic, there is an easy way to look at the situation with the Sabres (the Bills have "gotten the message" in the past with low attendance and constant losing): 1.) the arena will be filled because the Canadian fans want to see the Leafs and will buy season tickets to the Sabres for just that reason alone and the Buffalo fans constantly fall for the "hope springs eternal" line of thinking that Regier and Ruff have long ago learned to spout on a consistent basis. 2.) Terry Pegula can say all he wants, but making money is making money and a 3.2 billion dollar man certainly wants 4 billion more than he wants 2 billion so things won't change there. 3.) Darcy Regier may eventually go, but Lindy Ruff will be here forever. That's it, plain and simple. Ruff should have been fired when he couldn't win it all in '06-'07, then again in '08-'09. He should have been fired after the '10-'11 season and again in December of 2011 after the team obviously quit on him. Finally, Ruff should absolutely have been gone after the end of last season. Yet, listen to Ted Black and Terry Pegula and the thought never even crossed their minds. Now, Regier despite all obvious signs that he not only doesn't understand what the Sabres' needs are but also can't land the big-name free agents despite an alleged "wide open checkbook" policy of his owner and yet STILL gets a contract extension?!?!? Clearly, I feel for the staff of WGR because they know that Ruff needs to go yet he isn't going and they know it. So when a fan calls and says "what about this guy as the next coach?" they have to respond with "But there isn't a coaching position available" but can't say the next part which is "...and there won't be, EVER." Did I see it coming? Oh yes I did and told everyone around and to this day say the same thing: When Pegula started talking about what a great guy Larry Quinn was, I knew we were in trouble.
02/12/2013 4:38PM
Funny....
You get a thoughtful, meaningful and well-written piece like this, then you listen to Sabres apologists who work for the hockey team from 10-11 mornings. You think they're being objective. Night and day!

you nailed this one!!! Enough is enough already. I bleed blue & gold and I am sick of the same ole song & dance. I like Ruff to a point But the message is getting old. And for Regeir well I have never really been a fan. Sure he hit a few trades but he has missed on far more. Give me Brian Burke or Rick Dudley and I am sure we can see if Scott Arniel or Craig Ramsey want to coach this team. Either guy would be an upgrade right now.

The last evidence of pride on the Sabres
Whose blood was on a towel found hidden in a wall in the Sabres dressing room before the old Aud was demolished? That was never answered. Was it Korabs??? Dudleys??? Spencers??? Shacks??? Atkinsons??? Robitailles??? Pratts??? No one will ever know.

Hockey Heaven
For who, you may ask. For Darcy and Lindy, I guess. No accountability for an overall weak roster, for an apparent inability to get the puck out of their own end night after night, for a team that plays uninspired most of the time. Take away Miller's really good nights so far this season (about half a dozen)and this team maybe has 1 win. Schopp is right on several points in the article, including the main one. The team exisits for, and due to the fans and community. An owner may benefit from its existence but the purpose of their being is for the benefit of its supporters, period. Championships are the icing on the cake. The responsibility of management is to do everything in their power and resources to deliver an entertaining and competitive product. The last several years, including the last 2 under Pegula have fallen short of that purpose. We can only hope that Terry is enough of a steward of that responsibility to realize he made a mistake in extending Darcy, in being such a fan of Lindy's without the necessary evidence of such competitiveness and is willing to own it and make the changes that the Sabre nation is now asking loudly for. I would respect his decision to wait until the end of the season if that is his choice but will really get my true sense of what type of owner he is if the Sabres fail to qualify for the postseason, fail to ice a competitive and entertaining team, and make no MG nd or coaching changes as a result.
02/12/2013 5:02PM
Does Pegula really care?
Does Pegula really care how the fans feel about winning or losing?? He should care! After all, if I want to be entertained, I'll go to a movie or something. I believe in winning. Its the only way to success other than money.
02/12/2013 5:03PM
The Mistake
I applaud Pegula's sentiments and desires for the Sabres and Buffalo. But I think the one big mistake he made was publicly embracing Ruff & Regier and not leaving himself any "professional distance" so that he could fire them, if needed. Treating everyone like a "member of the family" sounds great but it makes tough decisions even tougher. Even if Pegula & company decided privately that major changes are needed, they would have to be willing to look foolish in public to fire anyone - given that Regier was just signed up for more years. I think Ruff is really the one that must go. Regier has been making better trades, but he's sold on Ruff. So he may have to go just because of that closed-minded loyalty. I think there is more potential talent on the team that is not being made to perform on the ice. Ruff is to be blame - there is no one else. We can play musical players for a few more years but I really wonder if the results will be much better without a coaching change.
02/12/2013 5:16PM
@ Terry the "Visionary"
You sir ......... are deranged. I'm pretty certain you are not one of those "hard-working Buffalonians" you mentioned but even if you were, Pegula won't be making a dime off you or anyone else anytime soon. To the contrary, he hasalready spent more on improving your town then he will ever get back in return. After reading these comments and listening to the local media I'm not sure why he would do that but he has.
02/12/2013 5:18PM
The joke is .......
someday Buffalo will actually win the Cup and you know what? People will still complain because it took too long.
02/12/2013 5:56PM
What?
Yea let's listen to people who love hockey but barely know a thing about what goes on off the ice, in the locker room, in the coach's room, in the video room. Yea, let's listen to random people whine about getting rid of Ruff and Regier, even though they have NO alternative. Please show me who is available for both spots, wants to work here, and is BETTER than who we have. Last time I checked Regier did a very good job picking up Regher, Ehrhoff, trading for Ott, and making prospects into quality NHL players like Ennis, Pominville,Vanek, Weber, Miller and so on. If someone gives alternatives for coaches and GMs, MAYBE I'll consider it. Until then, continue to whine about something you have zero knowledge of.
02/12/2013 6:22PM
Re: be patient
15 years and counting...It is amazing those two tools are still here and how worse it has gotten or haven't they noticed it? There is still unfinished business with this roster as I stated before this season ever started. Unfinished!!! Is this suddenly a 48 game exhibition???
02/12/2013 7:15PM
Why we need a new coach and GM
Let's face it the Sabres have and always will blow, and will never win anything. The reason we need a new coach and GM is because we could then listen to 15 years of new and exciting excuses. Just think how refreshing that would be....glass pounders.
02/12/2013 7:24PM
Facts are facts.
This was said on the NHL Network, so forgive me on lacking the name to give credit. "The Sabres are in trouble. They have a problem, and it isn't the team, it's behind the bench. When you change your roster to compete with the Boston's and Philly's of the NHL, and your team is making repetitive mistakes that date back years, your problem is Ruff. You will not succeed when you take big bodied defenceman and big, power forwards and make them abandon the body and utilize the stick check, you will not succeed." Another said "Lindy Ruff cannot win without a top goaltender." Facts are facts and he has got to go.
02/12/2013 9:20PM
The same goes for WGR
The commentary on this station is boring and stale just like the Sabres play. Fire Schopp! Fire the Bulldog! Fire Simon! You guys are all boring and stale. How many Pulitizers have you won? How many years has it been? Fire Schopp! Fire the Bulldog!
02/12/2013 10:16PM
Took less than 2 years to turn on Pegula.
Buffalo fans can't appreciate anything. Less than two years after getting the kind of owner most fans dream of we are ready to burn him at the stake along with Ralph Wilson. Mainly so media hacks have something to stoke passions in their columns and radio shows. "Where's our cup, wahhhh!" Bravo, Mike.
02/12/2013 10:22PM
Need a new GM to get a new coach
Time for Darcy to go. Bring in Brian Burke. You know he is not happy with Toronto for letting him go a few days before the start of the season. He would love nothing more than to stick it to his former team with one of their division rivals. He won acup in Anaheim and built the foundation in Vancouver. Toronto was headed in the right direction, they are just missing the goalie. He's also the GM of Team USA. He's one of the best in the business, just what this team needs.
02/12/2013 10:26PM
Deja vu
This team is soft, slow and predictable. Lacking leadership and undersized are secondary flaws. Time to make some hard decisions Pegulla. I don't want to hear Ted Black talk about building rinks downtown and harbor development and sidewalk vendors...give me a winner on the ice.
02/12/2013 10:34PM
Unbelievable Part II
I have been a loyal Sabres follower since 1971 ...Ottawa wins 2 -0, so now the sabres have scored just 4 goals in last 3 games and the beat goes on we have seen this act before, just like the past seasons: Ruff's inept/impotent offense and a terrible defense that doesn't engage and win battles in its own zone. Dear Mr. Pegula, how about giving Pat Lafontaine a chance (see my original message below)? Or Rick Dudley? ...Repprising my original message with updates: The Sabres have a stable with many fine players including many 1st round draft picks, so... * why is their w-l record 5 - 9? * why have the sabres missed the playoffs the last couple years? * what is on R & R's resumes to suggest they have the skills and experience to win the stanley cup? * why does it seem like so many of the Sabres players appear to be afflicted with the Tony Horton (baseball player with an interesting story)syndrome? * why is Gerbe in the lineup instead of Grigorenko against Boston when under Lindy they always have been offensively impotent in the 2nd game of back to back game? * what has Gerbe and Leopold done to justify spots in the lineup over other players? * aren't there any players on the farm that are skilled enough above replacement players to bump them out of the lineup yet? * why was Regier infatuated with undersized players in the first place and why are they still on the roster? * why does their defense resemble/ remind me of the defensive messes that James Patrick was part of back in his Ranger playing days? * why is one of their star # 1 draft picks (myers) benched and his play has degraded to this? * why was Stafford (another first rounder) so ineffective when needed last year and not scoring again this year? * why is there a lack of creative vision....is it just a coincidence that the head coach lacked this as a player? * why is Miller playing lights out and they are still losing games...is it that goalies can be be too overvalued these days? * why is Enroth, another blue chip talent totally ineffective? * why is Vanek showing signs of slowing down now that games are taking a toll? * why does anybody think Ennis is a top 2 line center? * why does Ennis and Hecht lose such a large pct. of faceoffs? * what do Patrick and Adams have on their coaching resumes that show that they are good coaches? * why do the sabres allow so many and score so few (fluke) carom-off-the backboard goals? This is popular now in the league, yet the sabres haven't caught on...why? Don't they practice this? Do the players think of this? Or is there a a lack of creative vision and direction? In addition to Lindy where's evidence of Darcy's vision and creativity? * why do the Sabres tolerate so many players, such as Leopold, Hecht, and Myers doing the ole rather than physically engaging their opponents in critical situations? Isn't this one of the reasons they have difficulty gaining puck possession in their end? So why do the sabres let this continue on from last year? * why do the sabres often look much more winded or gassed than their opponents as the game wears on? back when they had drury grier and briere they'd be down by 1 goal going into the second or third and would come roaring back. Was it physical or mental conditioning, discipline, or sheer determination (or all)? Do you think Darcy and Lindy have an eye for these intangibles and make this a priority in their acquisition strategy? well, if so it certainly doesn't show up in many of the players they draft. I don't see it in Grigorenko nor in Myers (he's a wreck), Stafford doesn't get scoring chances. If Myers is injured don't you think the sabres owe it to their paying customers to send a message (by moving Myers) that a desired salary is to be valued by the player and getting injured away from the NHL game is a careless unacceptable lack of commitment to the organization? Neither Gerbe nor Hecht can reliably create nior finish scoring chances. NBC news has a segment called the Fleecing of America, the Sabres also have a version going on here. The smoke and mirrors gig has got to come to an end soon with R & R. As Bucky Gleason said it comes down to credibility with those 2. Credibility doesn't guarantee wins, but without it and without lots of determination you're either treading water or dead in the water. Their play as a team reflects this. Would you be interested in seeing somone with knowledge and respect and is a reknowned great communicator like Pat Lafontaine have an opportunity to coach this team? Dear Mr. Pegula and Mr. Black, as a loyal follower since 1971, I would welcome this change and suspect it would be welcomed by many....certainly the results can be no worse than what we have had in recent times!
02/12/2013 10:37PM
Why!
Why is it that we get it! The Owner, G.M and Coach DON"T! I have tickets for the 19th and I am done this year!
02/12/2013 10:47PM
won't watch till they win
I've stopped watching the games all the way through. I DVR them, then, when the opposing team scores the first goal, I hit the fast forward button. I stop it usually when it's at the end because I'm sick and tired of watching this mess of a team. Can't do it. And stopped making plans to go to Buffalo to watch a game occasionally. No entertainment value. Not even the greatest announcer in NHL history can keep me anymore. SAD but true.
02/12/2013 11:12PM
yes panic
they got to do something. ive watched this team since '99 & this is arguably the worst team since the year they finished @ the basment of the eastern conference. (idk, 2001 maybe?) darcy needs to work some magic. players like nathan horton, ryan o'reilly, roberto luongo, etc are ripe for the picking. teams hop on players like turris or knuble. know why? because they improve your hockey team. our young players are regressing when they would over acheive in the past. i cant watch them right now because they are awful. i watch alot of hockey all over the league & im not confident that this particular sabre team can skate with anyone, like they used to be able to do when they actually HAD salary cap / "small market" excuses. ug. lets talk about accountability. what incentive(s) do players have to succeed? they know their coach & gm can get away with murder & not have their jobs be in jeopardy. it trickles down to the players. the sweetest locker room in the NHL isnt going to force these players to execute on the ice. if anything it makes them lazier. "oh look, we can lose & we get all this nice stuff." i say get the heck out of here with that excrement. drew stafford? i'm sorry buddy, but you have to go. i bet there's ahl teams that would pass on you @ this point. our defense is too soft. they stick check instead of putting the fear of god into their opponents. how long can managenment sit back & put up with mediocrity? theyre not even that @ this point. sadly. i'll still watch & root for them, but my god, almost wish the lockout had just wiped this season right out. it would have been less painful anyway. i feel bad for vanek. he's the only guy playing like he wants to win. miller is improving, but they need to get a solid backup that can give the guy a break & actually win some games. this has been going on for seasons now. the last time we had an actual good pair of goalies was miller & biron. that didnt last long for some stupid reason. i guess they can only improve, but @ the same time, they're really not. we can sit back & say "oh well, maybe next season." it's getting old & tired. kinda like lindy ruff.
02/12/2013 11:25PM
Sabres lose again
Do you really need to hear more?

50 Years of Buffalo Team Owners: Wealth does not always mean intelligence
Pegula's first mistake was stating money was no object, it's OK to think it, but foolish to say it at his opening press conference. Owners can NOT be fans who and idolize their coach. The players are seeing first hand that accountability doesn't matter. Regier should have been dumped, but instead, got a new contract! Buffalonians mistakenly believe that wealth equals intelligence. It does not. ALL of our sports team owners: Pegula, Ralph Wilson, John Rigas and Bob Rich were all very lucky to get to where they got. Their sports teams are just hobbies. Golisano gave control to Larry Quinn, but was smart enough to realize it's not worth it. So did Braves owner, Paul Snyder. In 50 years, Seymour Knox was the only sports visionary Buffalo has ever had, and it showed. He hired Punch Imlach, who put his team in the Stanley Cup Finals in 5 years.
02/13/2013 12:58AM
on the money
put me in the group that does not always agree with Schopp, or anyone for that matter, but... i've been waiting for someone to make this point for a while (besides me). teams are there for ENTERTAINMENT. that's why when i hear Regeir or anyone say they don't want to make a trade just to make a trade, i say WHY NOT? fans love trades! it's one of the more exciting things in sports is to see new players. a new coach can be a similar thing. i love Ruff compared to most coaches i see/hear, but CHANGE WORKS. two of the last Cup winners had in-season coach changes.. another in first season, and a couple more in 2nd season. continuity means NOTHING in NHL. it's proven.
02/13/2013 1:33AM
Right on! Pegula says he owns the team and we accept what he says, thank you, finally.
King Terry, it is becomming clear that Pegula says it's what he wants, regardless of the team we wind up with. And, Regier says were gonna get Ruff, no matter what, if he's here. Is this the way you talk to, or view the fan base? This is becomming some twisted nightmare on ice!
02/13/2013 2:27AM
this
team is the joke of the league, still
02/13/2013 2:40AM
Even Sadam Hussein had supporters till the very end! There are fools in every arena.
There's always going to be a few morons blindly clinging to a cause, long after it's over and done with. It's some sort of psychological problem, and their often vocal about it. Nobody can argue this nonsense anymore. Great article.
02/13/2013 6:24AM
The NHL has seen this before
.. in Philly Ed Snider remained loyal to Bobby Clark despite historic ineptitude. They never improved (living on the old glory of the 70's) until a new GM cleaned house and changed the culture. R&R don't even have a legacy of success hide behind.
02/13/2013 7:17AM
@ Saddam Hussein
spilled my coffee all over the monitor over that punchline...the bill is in the mail ;-)
02/13/2013 7:49AM
Team without a heart
Terry should know that goals are scored from in front of the net ...if he watched yesterdays game . We need a change !
02/13/2013 8:01AM
3yr guarantee should read:
I guarantee within the next 3yrs we will deliver a last place team to the city of Buffalo.
02/13/2013 8:17AM
LOOK AROUND the LEAGUE
Re: Do not agree I can't believe you are defending R&R you accuse fans that want change of not knowing hockey and praise R&R's lifetime of hockey knowledge. Well I have news for you MR. smartas did Gailey's lifetime of football make him a great coach? Teams have changed coaches for far less than the below par seasons the sabres have given us the past three years. There are too many teams to mention that have fired coaches and gone on with better seasons that Buffalo. Not to mention the poor drafting and letting good players go. Look at how many X sabres are playing for teams that are above the sabres in the standings.but wern't good enough for this team and look at the players who continue to play poorly (Gerbe. Meyers. stafford. Heght. Regier. Leino. etc etc etc ) I hope you get the point. So before you start defending R&R look at the scoreboard If there is anyone who THINKS he knows about hockey it's you and I can say from what you've said ...you need a reality check...get in line behind your hero's R&R and Mr Pegula
02/13/2013 9:30AM
Terry is learning a harsh lesson
I 100% believe Pegula has his heart in the right place with the purchase of this team. The fact is, he is not an experienced sports team owner. He's learning his lessons, and in the case of a few players, he's learning the hard way. How many franchises in professional sports went out, spent as much money as they possibly could, then sat back and watched with horror at the failures of their teams. Terry was willing to pay the tab, he paid players who he believed or who he was TOLD to believe, were worth the cost. He's no doubt a disappointed customer right now. The Sabres primary problem is a lack of talent. Period. These guys are paid well beyond their skill levels. I'd take a Kaleta with his heart and soul over a Ville Leino or Drew Stafford anyday. Yet look at the salary differences. Pegula will learn the ropes, but it will take a couple more years unfortunately.
02/13/2013 9:37AM
Terry the "Visionary" touches a Nerve
I'm glad to see that my belittling of Terry the "visionary" has touched a couple of nerves. One individual came to the defense of poor victimized billionaires by blaming Buffalo workers for all the empty factories in Buffalo. Middle-class Buffalonians are to sacrifice, not the downtrodden billionaires. Shed a tear for them, it's such a sacrifice and burden to be wealthy. Another individual feels I and others need to genuflect at the feet of Terry Pegula for all the charity he has doled out to the peasants of Buffalo. Yes, I and others need to know our place, and acknowledge the greatness and charity of our superiors. Pegula is arrogant. The Sabres are his property and play thing, I and other fans are to shut-up and know our place, and everyone has to make the sacrifice of watching and cheering the Sabres while declaring how "Great" Terry is. Billionaires have such fragile egos, poor babies.
02/13/2013 11:37AM
My Support
I love how so many fans have jumped on the media for bashing The Sabres the ownership. First of all this is their job, to watch the games and give give their analysis. In many ways its an opinion but its still them doing what they were hired to do. MaybeThe Sabres need to learn form the media, know your job and do it. Right now their job is to turn things around and make a winning team, job #1 get a new coach and for all Sabres fans sake get a new GM!!
02/13/2013 11:42AM
What we like
Fans enjoy teams that fight, score, and/or win. Nolan's teams fought and we loved them. The 2005-2006 teams scored and won so we loved them. Do all three and you are the Bruins. This team does none of those three things. Nothing to fall in lovewith...
02/13/2013 11:48AM
Darcy digs a hole.
The sad part is that the big long term contracts given to Myers, Miller, Ehrhoff, and Leino put them in Cap hell for quite awhile. With the lack of big cap space they can only "tinker" with this roster they can't overhaul it. They aregoing to need to dump salary if they are ever going to fix this team long term.
02/13/2013 11:56AM
You hit the nail on the head
Except for saying they mediocre, that would imply .500 hockey - They are far worse. I grew up in playing hockey in Buffalo and moved away from the area 15 years ago. I have spent everyone of them leaving the office early when the Sabres were on Nat'l TV, now spend the money for NHL Center Ice or NHL Game Center to watch. Now, I'm simply done - Even though I paid for Game Center this year soley to watch them, I didnt even want to last night. Then I found myself looking at the score with hopes that they lost just so we can get rid of our pathetic Coach. I even just questioned using the word 'our coach' instead of 'the coach'. Until news comes across of a change - I am done I dont expect the cup in three years
02/13/2013 11:59AM
In Reality
The team has NOT improved since the "Darcy and Lindy" show began. They ae still a mediocore team with an undeserved fan base. How much longer?????????
02/13/2013 12:05PM
It's over
I have resigned myself to the fact life is better without the Buffslo Sabres. NO more caring, NO more attending games, and NO more media. Thank God!
02/13/2013 12:15PM
wonder
if we will ever have a championship in this town - EVER!! So nerve-wracking to see other teams be good, and have good leadership/ownership. What do we get? Lip service!!!! I'm nearly 41...this is getting so depressing!!!
02/13/2013 2:32PM
Article
Good article Mike. It really doesn't bother me either if the Sabres or Bills win a championship or not. All I want is a competative team that will be in the playoff picture more than 50% of the time and win a playoff series or two. If they do happen to win a cup thats better yet. This team has changed over players and still is doing no better, probably worse. When you get a program at the game it includes names of 'senior advisors'. What exactly do they advise him on? Must not be fan feeling or won / lose record.
02/13/2013 2:45PM
whata do you expect
when the only player on this team even worthy of note is vanek. the rest are barely good enuff for the minors.
02/13/2013 4:48PM
2 great tickets for sale for Sabre games
on the bulletin board where I work.. NO takers, been up for 2 weeks. No lie.
02/13/2013 5:36PM
Us or you?
I read the first few paragraphs and gave up. "We've been scrutinizing this statement in terms..." "We've..."? I disagree. "You" are the one on the mountain top screaming this quote day in and day out. Sure, everyone has thought about February 2011 lately and everyone is upset about, even Pegula. But you are one of the few who don't stop bitching about it every day. Buffalo sports has been rough for the past while and Buffalo sports journalists have gotten just as bad. Jerry Sullivan, you are clearly no longer the pessimist among Buffalo sports journalists.
02/13/2013 7:39PM
No
The Mission Statement should be to win the Cup. Everything else will fall into place as we go for the main goal.
02/13/2013 8:02PM
Mike Schopp, please stop.
I'm sorry, but I can't take it anymore. Mike, you're probably a nice guy and a good husband and father but you are terrible at your job. Just do the card thing on Saturday's. WGR needs to move Jeremy White to the afternoon withBulldog. Your opinions are not reflective of the people of Buffalo. They lack true insight and you come across as a guy who writes and speaks without thinking. Please go open a card shop somewhere.

stanley cup: add water and stir?
Mike Ilitch has more money than he knows what to do with. He spent a lot of it to make the Red Wings a winner. Did it happen right away? No. He bought the team in 1982; they didn't win a Stanley Cup until 1997. It takes time, effort and sacrifice to build a winner and nothing worth having comes easy. Terry Pegula has owned the Sabres for three years and Darcy Regier has had a real budget to work with and an owner who won't undercut him for two. As a Sabres fan I want a Cup as much as anyone and I think Ruff's time has passed -- everything ends -- but come on, people. Stop being children and realize you can't have what you want when you want it. Let them do the work.
02/13/2013 8:26PM
Regeir needs to hold Lindy accountable
I do beleive the sabres talent has improved since Pegula bought the team, there fore I think Darcys only fualt is keeping Ruff around and not holding him accountable for the teams horrible play , I do think its time for Ruff to go,the players need a fresh voice and new system ,if Darcy i unwilling to fire Lindy then I guess he will have to go to,Pegula needs to grow a pair and take charge,
02/13/2013 10:01PM
The really bad news.
I can't help but think that both this ownership/management and city will accept mediocrity until the bitter end. I don't blame anyone, and I blame everyone- all at once. Truthfully, it's hard to fault Pegula (despite his claims with regard to his intentions of building a championship team) for letting this ship sink. Why wouldn't he? When was the last time the fans made a statement and (really) pressured ownership and management to do something about the team? Has there ever been a time? Right now it's quiet, but the building is usually full. It's really, really hard to fail when nobody's actually deciding what "failure" is. I'd hate to know what would be enough to drive fans away given what keeps them coming. As far a Pegula's tenure thus far- I'd go easy on him, at least in a few ways. He's backed his words up with respect to attracting players to Buffalo (albeit by overpaying them: which sadly is the only way to bring an athlete to Buffalo). The past 2 summers have at least been interesting. Under Golisano, I could have slept from June through October without missing anything, sans a few departures. Where Pegula has come up short is in his inability to disconnect from his inner "fan". If the sight of one former player with practically no connection to the current team was enough to bring him to tears, what happens when the current coach also happened to be near and dear to the average fan? This, I guess. Ruff's style of coaching was antiquated in 2001, and even if it weren't: he's oblivious to the fact that his roster isn't built to play that style. Whenever I think of his "tenure", I can't help but think how many coaches have been fired for dragging their organization down less. Then there's Darcy Regier. His arrogance has always astounded me. I'll just point out the 12 game losing streak last season (where nothing was done) and put the topic of G.M. to bed. It epitomized him, his philosophy, and his time here. As long as both of them are here, we're going to fail. As long as one (or the other) are here, we're going to fail. Unless both of them quit- that cup Pegula wants so badly can't happen. They can't seem to do enough detriment to the team to lose their jobs. Just think, Vanek is due for his inevitable cold streak: what's this team going to look like then?
02/13/2013 11:56PM
Not So Brilliant of an Opinion
Your forgetting one major thing. We the fans do not "own" the team. Doesn't matter what we think Pegula should do. He owns the team, he spent his money on it, so he makes the calls. Mike, WGR55, Fans get over it....you do not own the team. If you don't like it, don't go the games or watch the games on TV. It's the only power you have.
02/14/2013 3:41AM
The sad reality is...
we thought we were getting a great owner but in reality we ended up with a joke. And let's just be honest, to keep a coach/gm combo with the record ruff and regier have, with the start they've had this season and last, is a joke. And when youhave a joke of an owner, you end up with a joke of a team. Granted, it's not a very funny joke, but it's still a joke...

Young Team!
This is a really young team! I can't remember a younger team. Let's hope they gel as the year goes on. I see a lot of young team issues like solid passing. GO Sabes!

RE: Mike Schopp, please stop.
Don't blame Schopp for what he says on his show. Way back in his rochester days, he did "sports talk for smart people", and it was a hit. But in buffalo he has had to "dumb it down" big time for the buffalonians, and yes that is a bit annoying. And yeah, move jeremy white. Move him to the overnight time slot and let him do his show for twelve year olds there.
