Intent to injure?

One of the NHL's most prominent bad boys was involved in a freak accident last night.  The recently reformed Matt Cooke got his skate into the Achilles tendon of Ottawa's Erik Karlsson.

So what do you think?  Was it intentional?

Matt Cooke should be banned from the league
its just to bad it didnt happen to Chris Neil instead.

WOW
It sure looks like he aimed, pointed, and fired....and hit the bulls-eye to me...very dirty

Career Ending
It's possibly a career ending injury depending on how deep the cut is, that being said it is hard to believe you skate someones Achilles on purpose.
02/14/2013 7:33AM
no
Maybe its because he was a scumbag, but I think it was on purpose. It looks like originally it was part of the play, but then he puts it down right on his leg and almost looks like a stomp.

Dirty?
Cooke is dirty so this hit is dirty

Scumbag
Cooke is now messing with me on a personal level, Time to boot Karlsson off my fantasy team! To Heck with you Matt Cooke! I wish a speedy recover to Karlsson as well.

No Intent
No. No way. Cooke's been a chior boy for a while now.
02/14/2013 8:02AM
cooke
is such a dirty player that it makes it difficult to give him a pass on anything; however, his head is looking away from Karlsonn. This looks unintentional to me.

tough to tell
Its tough to tell, although I don't see him as being off balance enough to warrant lifting his foot like that. Given his history, I don't think he gets the benefit of the doubt on this one, but its also not clear enough to throw a chris simon sized ban at him either. I'd go with 2-4 games unless a closeup or different angle reveals something else.

Intent to injure?
No, it was a hockey play. Cooke just finished his check. If it was Kaleta, you know the rest. The Sabres still won't beat Ottawa.

DIRTY!!! Definite intent to injure.
There is a distinct kicking motion, and if people don't see it, they are blind. When you are going into the boards with someone, why would you do it on one leg? That is not how you are taught. DIRTY. I hope someone makes Cooke's face looklike he went through a meat grinder!

tough call
That is a tough call as much as i dont like matt cooke i dont see him as the type of guy who is intentionally going to take his skate to someones body to injure. Why is his foot in the air??? Either way got to hope Karlsson isnt too badly hurt and Cooke eugh leave it to shanny.
02/14/2013 9:00AM
Yes
100% on purpose.
02/14/2013 9:00AM
100% dirty
thats as bad as sue saying he didnt mean to stomp on that packers player
02/14/2013 9:15AM
OFF BALANCE
KARLSSON PUSHES BACK INTO COOKE, COOKE LOST BALANCE FOR A MOMENT LIFTING LEFT LEG. WHEN HE REGAINED BALANCE AND TRIED TO FINISH HIS CHECK, HIS SKATE CAME DOWN JUST ABOVE KARLSSONS SKATE. FREAK ACCIDENT, DONT LIKE COOKE, BUT NOT BLAMING HIM HERE.

Cooke had total intent are you kidding
If you keep replaying the hit you can see a forward kicking motion.... so that results in no goal... I mean kicking Cooke out of the leauge, there is no need for bad sportsmanship.

dirty pitt.
Once again, Pitt. gets away with murder because they have pritty boy Cindy Crosby, the NHL's poster boy on there team! IT MAKES ME SICK!!!!

Dirty Dirty Dirty
Maybe this sort of thing will stop when criminal charges are filed????
02/14/2013 12:48PM
accident
It is obvious that it was NOT intentional.
02/14/2013 1:30PM
look at the puck...
If you look at where the puck was headed, I think its pretty clear that Cooke was trying to get his skate in between Karlssons legs to stop the puck. Cooke is dirty alright, but this looks pretty accidental.

Dirty play
If someone is going for the hit they either smash the other player in to the boards. Bad hit they leap in the air to make the hit, This guy raised one skate drove it in to his achilies. Dirty hit.
02/14/2013 3:53PM
Accidental
It is clear he was trying to pin Karlsson against the boards. The majority of people are going to think what they are going to think because of who was involved and thats fine but, most people complain when Kaleta gets a finger wag simply because of who he is. So just remember that. Go check out the TSN footage first before making any conclusions. The first is angle is done in slow motion and it is much easier to see what happened.

Cooke is a Choir boy compared to Kaleta!
But don't tell Sabres fans that! Kaleta is so dirty referees ignore anything done to him because he deserves it, NHL justice. To say that Cooke was intentional is MYOPIC. But thats just what Sabres fans are. So Buy a new Hecht jersy and.. GO Get your golf clubs ready...loosers..
02/14/2013 4:55PM
Cooke Guilty?
Yes... He was definitely on "The Grassy Knowl"!!! LOL!!! Dumb Sabres fans are delusional. They crucify Cooke and lionize Kaleta- who really is The Biggest Cheapshot artist in all of hockey! Also stop and think:::: Isn't Sens accidentlylosing Karllson a good thing for the sorry Sabres? Ya think? It's also good for Darcy, seeing that Karlsson was drafted a mile after Tyler Myers and embarasses them nightly. Golf clubs are on sale again! Get movin...
02/14/2013 6:09PM
Accident, but...
It looks innocent enough but why was Cooke's leg up in the first place? Didn't seem necessary.
02/14/2013 6:34PM
i see both sides.
although Cooke is a dirty player, i don't believe he meant to injure him. he wasn't looking at where his skate was. the "kicking foot" appears to get stuck on a sock or something. in his skating motion, he was trying to puch off. it is normally a harmless play. i feel aweful that a great player like Karlsson may possible lose a career, but i see no reason to punish Cooke. In this case, he never meant to do anything more than finish a check.
02/14/2013 7:54PM
IMO
He clearly lifts his leg because the guy he's going against pushes back against him, but he also clearly kicks down when they go into the boards - I don't think he planned on slicing his achilles, but he clearly was trying to kick the guy. I'd give him more benefit of the doubt if he didn't have such a long history of being a dirty player.
02/14/2013 10:22PM
okay with it
Good for us with Karlsson out.
02/15/2013 10:05AM
What if Matt Cooke cut Achilles tendon of Buffalo's Lindy RUFF?
That would be doing a big favor for the entire NHL
02/15/2013 10:46AM
Re: okay with it
Idiot...The Sabres still won't beat Ottawa.
02/15/2013 6:49PM
Dirty play not surprised
I watched it several times and conclude Cooke intended to hurt Karlsson but not to cut his achilles. Cooke is and always will be a dirty player
