Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- Baffling some fans for the duration of the 2012 season, the Buffalo Bills never activated quarterback Tarvaris Jackson on a gameday despite trading for him during the preseason. To the surprise of even more, that one-year stint with the Bills won't be his last.
The team announced on Friday that they have re-signed Jackson in 2013. The Bills acquired the quarterback in late August for a conditional draft pick, which ended up being a seventh-round selection in this year's NFL Draft. Terms of the new contract were not disclosed.
Jackson is a seven-year veteran in the NFL, with previous stints in Minnesota and Seattle. He'll be 30 years old when the 2013 season starts.
Making matters even more interesting, head coach Doug Marrone declared through the press release that the quarterback position will be an open one this off-season -- which includes the incumbent Ryan Fitzpatrick.
“I spoke with Ryan and Tarvaris and told them we will have an open competition at the quarterback position – similar to what we will do at all positions on our team heading into our offseason work. I believe that our players will embrace this challenge. We are looking forward to working with our players as we prepare for the 2013 season.”
This is the seventh roster transaction for the Bills in the past eight days as the new coaching staff continues to assess the team. On February 7, they announced that they would not tender a contract to restricted free agent wide receiver Donald Jones.
Four days later, the team announced they released linebacker Nick Barnett and strong safety George Wilson. On Thursday, long-time Bills cornerback Terrence McGee was released, while the Bills signed quarterback Aaron Corp and offensive lineman Hutch Eckerson.
The Bills and the rest of the NFL will be in Indianapolis for the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine starting next week.
