Buffalo Sabres (6-8-1) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (10-5-0)

The Sabres entering Sunday's game against the Penguins coming off a comeback win against the Boston Bruins on Friday night.

First Period

So much for carrying over Friday night's win. The Penguins scored just 0:35 seconds in on a Pascal Dupuis slap shot.

The Sabres' ugly start got uglier after Tyler Myers took a high sticking penalty. Pittsburgh made Buffalo pay a few seconds later on a Sidney Crosby tip in to put the Pens up 2-0 in the first period.

Buffalo jumped back in the game with a Cody Hodgson goal. Hodgson grabbed a rebound in front of goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and wristed it into the net.

The Sabres took advantage of a 5-on-3 situation to tied the game on a long slap shot by Christian Ehrhoff that was tipped in for Thomas Vanek's NHL-best 12th goal of the year.

Third period

The Sabres briefly took the lead on a friendly bounce that was slammed home by Steve Ott. But the Penguins came back only minutes later with Dupuis' second goal of the afternoon.

With just over two minutes remaining, a Paul Martin screen shot found the back of the net. The Penguins held on in the final two for the win.

Pomminville

Needs to go. He has cost us 2 penalties and the 3rd goal. He hasn't looked great all season. The Vanek line is producing 'cause of Vanek/Hodgson - Pomminville is not helping. Trade him and a defensive prospect for O'Reilly. Doubt anyone in their right mind would go for that, who knows.

Once Again Sabres Not Ready......

Part of the coach's job is to have the team ready when the puck is dropped. Obviously this did not happen once again today. To be down when the game is barely 2 minutes old is pretty tough to overcome even for a good team. It's virtually impossible for this weak, uninspired group!!!!

Good for tv....

bad for the Sabres. Just did not seem like we can ready to play and once again had to fight from behind. We were lucky to be in this one and would have stolen a point (or two) only because of Miller. Pommy's turnover was huge, what were you thinking man. This team is terrible in their own end and it cost us. In the end, we got what we deserved.

lets listen to all the comments "whats wrong with buffalo" jeremy howard schopp bulldog giving their reasons but nobody wants to look at the problem. wanted to get tougher to play against and they are not. think about it not one defensemen hits or plays the body consistantly. not even regier and the 4th goal doesnt happen if sulzer plays body on crosby. also besides kaleta and ott who plays the body. foligno maybe evry 3 games hits someone. but its ott and kaleta. there is your tougher team. lindy plays kaleta 7 mins a game and ott 15 there is your tough team. stop asking whats wrong with this team its not coach or talent. its a team that doesnt like to work hard for 60 mins and doesnt like body contact. kaleta dives to block shots ott plays hard every shift. thats the problem. if u dont want to hit or work hard who do you have to answer to. pomminville vanek or stafford. those are your captain and assistant captains. none of them finish checks and arent going to grab another player and make them play physically cause they dont. u have no real hard working physical player in a leadership role the way drury was. this team lacks leadership fromgm to coach to players. nobody is ever held accountable for not giving a 60 minute hard working effort. stop asking whats wrong there it is.

Unbelievable Part III

Building on my comments from Part I and II posted after prior games...I have been a loyal Sabres follower since 1971. The sabres have a stable of talent yet underperform yearly. This makes having the status quo in place for so long unbelievable. We are now about one third of the way thru the schedule...so why does Gerbe, Hecht Regehr, Kaleta, Weber, McCormick, not too mention the others have no goals and Stafford, Leopold, Foligno, and Sekera only have one goal, yes, thats after F-I-F-T-E-E-N games? With the exception of Foligno (basically a rookie),doesn't this make them non-factors and not differencemakers? So why have the sabres scored 3 goals or less in 80% of their games? Why are they losing 70% of their faceoffs? Why does their seem to be a lack of cohesion and strength in their defensive zone play? Why does their defensive zone play remind me of the Ranger defensive messes that James Patrick was part of during his playing days. What qualifies Adams and Patrick as good coaches..what is on their resume, where have they coached to build up to the NHL level not too mention stanley cp level? Playing is one thing, solving problems and communicating is another. The Pitt game makes it 5 games (one third played) now where they have given up carom/rebound off the backboard goals...why haven't they figured out how to defend this popular trend in the league and why haven't they scored any like this yet? Are they lacking in defensive awareness and if so why haven't they done something to address this? Call it puck possession or whatever, clearly they are weak up the middle, so why not get O'Reilly for Grigorenko, Ennis, Hodgson and another prospect, roster defensemen and/or a draft pick or 2? Armia, Gergenson, and Piscik have done anything at the major level yet. If you have a clear weakness why not address it, if you have depth on the farm it shouldn't matter what you give up at this point? So far Grigorenko is just potenial and unproven and he's at least 2 to 3 years from being an asset (and also showing indications he may end up with serious holes in his defensive game). If you have a cap problem, you fix it even if the trade is negative in the talent swap. Why have Boyes and Kassian been so poinmt productive since leaving the Sabres? Even with Roy gone, why do the Sabres still have so many midgets, Gerbe, Ennis, Leopold, Pominville? Its clear they are getting outpositioned and out fought for the puck on the boards...isn't this a puck possession issue? Who was responsible for selecting them. Why haven't they obtained a "homerun" in Regiers and Ruff's tenure...that surely is not a money issue? Drury was the closest thing and they have his second coming beckoning in Colorado.Surely there must be someone on the farm or available from another team that could fix the problem. If the midgets are 1 trick ponies (scorers) and they are not scoring, doesn't it make sense? They effort seems to be there so it can only come down to physical limitations and coaching. It's now been 42 years and counting without a cup, isn't it time to fess up and say we have problem? Because all the arrows point in that direction. besides why have so young many players brought up thru the Sabres system regressed badly: Myers, Enroth, Stafford, Kaleta (he was scoring goals early in his career), Sekera? It seems to me like a lack of creative vision (something the current head coach lacked as a player),proper coaching/skills development. I'm hoping Ted Black and Terry Pegula read this because I truly beleive this gets to the root of the problem. Many of these thoughts have been echored by co-workers, friends and fellow fans alike. We hate to see this turn into the NHL version of what has happened at "no" Bills Drive in OP. It's not about not getting to up or down on the team, its about taking a step back and looking at the big picture & admitting theres a big problem, because just like an alcoholic this is the first step to getting back on the right track.

It's over

in probably twenty-nine other cities where there is an NHL franchise, the coach would be canned after the dreadful performance today on national TV. The Sabres go down two goals before everybody has been seated. What kind of objective assessment is imagined when the owner (at the outset of taking over the franchise says: "Lindy Ruff ain't going nowhere"; and after missing the play-offs on a routine basis, extends the general manager? If Mr Pegula ran his fracking operation like he is "growing" the Sabres, he wouldn't be in position to have "rescued" the franchise, nor sponsor a Division I hockey program in Happy Valley. No point to getting too demoralized, Mr Black will assure the radio audience later in the upcoming week... "everybody is being evaluated."

This Game Was All About Goaltending

Cancel out the power play goal each team had, the rest of the game featured mistakes by both teams and the difference was the goaltending to bail their teams out. Fluery was better than Miller. The winning goal by Martin, why was Miller to his right with being screened to his right and the whole net to Millers left was wide open. In a situation like that, if players are screening you on your right, any common sense by a goalie is to be positioned towards his left with a shot from the point. That's where Martins shot went. That is coached by any goaltending coach. Miller should have had the net covered to his left with players to his right. Bad read by Miller and WGR picks on Pomminville. This game was exciting to watch. It ended up which goalie was better covering up for errors. Sniff some more glue Hamilton!!! Miller lost another "big" game late. Stow it shill.

ANOTHER "CHaracter game" LOSS... for a Failing Captain and RUFF...

This had to be the most embarrassing game of Pomminville's career. Ruff asked HIS CAPTAIN FOR LEADERSHIP and "POMMERSIE" was absolutely intimidated, outclassed and sadly embarrassed by Crosby. Lindy Ruff and Pommersie are never capable of inspiring the character necessary to win games like this. PLAYOFF TYPE GAMES. Crosby routinely POWERS CHARACTER WINS like this, because he's a Captain of a different breed. Pomminville is the MISFIT chosen captain by Ruff and his FAILURES as a poor soft leader exactly MIRRORS Ruff's failing coaching career. Seemingly Tied at the hip; Pommers, Ruff and Regeir are a joke to live with and of course.... "they ain't goin nowhere!!" Forever, 4.

Plus and minus': Brad Boyes the guy who was ridden out of town and played on Ruffs 4th line last year has 10 points. That places him 5th on the Sabres in points and ahead of 17 other players on our team. At 1 million he's a deal and would really help a coach who knows how to play him. minus Ruff. Why play Hodson's line against Crosby when you know the guy is struggling with defense and faceoffs? minus Ruff Why dress John Scott when Pittsburg is not know for being a fighting team? Don't you need offense? minus Ruff Isn't the coach supposed to have his team ready to play and not start a game flat in there own building? minus Ruff Isn't the head coach responsible for his coaching staff and yet this team is last in special teams? minus Ruff Isn't the team captain supposed to be a leader? Luke Adam was banished to Rochester for defensive liabilities that didn't come close to those of Tyler Ennis. When is Lindy going to realize the huge liability he is defensively and not play him in critical situations, like the third, second and first periods !!!!!

Sabres Model is wrong

The model that the Sabres have is just wrong. The only way that this team would have any chance of winning in today's NHL is to have Dominick Hasek, Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur in their prime. Miller will never, ever be the caliber of any of those goaltenders...yet Darcy Regier continues to think that he is. Miller in fairness to him is being asked to do too much. He is just not a good enough goaltender to do it. Time to blow this up and change this team model all together. Wrong methodology, wrong players, wrong coach.

Ryan Miller's Language

What is it about Ryan Miller always feeling that he has to drop profanities in front of the media when he loses and is upset? Is it an attention getting thing? Does he think it makes his message more meaningful? Look, I swear as much as the next guy, but I wouldn't make a habit out of doing it on live TV. You would think the Sabres would have a PR guy somewhere in their ranks who could sit down with Miller and have a face to face. Dropping F-bombs doesn't make him more of a man, it just makes him less likeable as a person, IMO.

A big thank you to Steve Ott- at the end of game, getting into Flower's face and showing some grit. It's NOT OK to lose, especially at home and in front of a national audience...period! At least he showed some emotion, even with 0:00 on the clock. It's starting to look like maybe he plays 100% every shift because he DIDN'T come up through our seemingly lame organization. He picked up his edge outside of Buffalo! I'm glad he's here!!!

A smaller version of Roy who tries to stickhandle through 5 opposing players before turning it over as usual. The mighty mites are such a cute act. Gerbe, Ennis....why?? We have an 18 yr old superstar getting ruined by this head coach. Leopold once again watching pucks go into his net..just horrible. Sulzer another soft Euro Dman who will not play the body ever. Sick and tired of the same old same old. The love affair with Hecht continues, its gonna take another concussion to get him off the ice. A great game we should have won ..............

Terrific how the team came back from that early hole they dug for themselves. After the start I felt Buffalo outplayed the Pens. Every mistake seems to result in a goal for the other team. It's a tough way to play when you have to be perfect for 60minutes. They're getting better though. Keep it up boys ...... you'll get through this !

Need a LEADER

Pommer just too soft and aw shucks. Stafford....please that A is for ambivalence, Vanek maybe but THIS TEAM NEEDS A TRUE LEADER that will get in other peoples faces INCLUDING his teammates. For Gods sake Jonathan Toews even dropped the gloves the other night against Joe Thornton. Sometimes your captain has to step up and do things nobody else on the team will, its called being a LEADER. Miller deserves to be pizzed hes watching the same old mistakes and half azzed efforts, lackadazical play, turnovers every night. Miller shouldve dropped Error-hoff with a stick to the groin so he could see the flutterball that ended up being the winner. WORST DEFENSE in the NHL. Miller

Ryan Miller is the greatest goalie in the world. Why not trade him right now? Get all you can. He has now called out his team and cannot be to popular in the room at this time. The craziest thing about Miller is I never hear anyone call him out whenhe has a bad game. I am just getting sick of hearing him talk. Ted Nolan -

We didn't lose under nolan, his last season we won the northeast and won a playoff series. He did that in 2 years and got fired. Ruff has won the northeast twice in fourteen years and he's apparently untouchable. And most of ruff's success came on the back of hasek and the team nolan built. Clearly, one coach knows how to kiss management backside and the other doesn't.

His mom called and said Ryan Miller is a fine goaltender. I think Miller is one of the top goalies in the League and put Him on a top ten team and he makes that team automatic cup contenders. If the Sabres lose Miller who are they going to replace him with? The Sabres problems are much deeper than goal tending. How about their lack of heart and fire? How about the fact that Pominville is captain? How about the fact that a good core of the players are cream puff Europeans? Play Grigorinko WHAT? The guy looks like a baby foal that was just born and learning to stand on his feet for the first time when he skates. NBC Announcer Said The Same Thing I've Been Saying All Year

I wasn't surprised to hear the NBC announcer say right before the Penguins score the game-winning goal that the Sabres were "sloppy". That is sad commentary for an announcer to say that about any hockey team. However, I have watched all of the Sabres games this season and I would say that I have used the word "sloppy" in around 90 percent of the games that the Sabres have played. Why can't this team pass the puck from player to player without RJ or any other announcer make the excuse and say that "the puck jumped over their stick". Lindy needs to set aside a whole day of practice with just passing the puck and to help cut down on the turnovers.

Hockey Hotline a Joke

Nothing but two hours of shilling mediocrity. Sylvester must love hearing himself motor while he stalls the callers I believe on purpose. He has got to be kidding with his optimistic preaching this team will make the playoffs. Tuesdays and Thursdays is beyond a joke when his shilling partner Peters joins him. Two idiots that can't face the reality the Sabres suck and going no where fast. All you can do is listen to both of them make fools out of themselves laughing your a$$ off. Pathetic show.

Pardys presence could allow the Sabres to make a move

I read that blog. What move? Where are they? When? Why? I'm not going to any more games this season. One was enough and that was this past Sunday. They're done. My membership is due at Transit Valley Country Club. Can't wait to start playing golf this spring. FIRE REGEIR, RUFF AND GET RID OF MILLER, then I'll get interested again.

How was it? I didn't bother tuning into it today and won't bother listening to it from the audio vault either. Was Howard tough today on his questioning or was he soft as he always is??? Was the question asked if Lindy considered resigning ascoach of the Sabres? I'll pick the usual soft approach toward Lindy by Howard and Jeremy. Someone let me know if I was right. You cannot fire Ruff when your GM has openly stated he has no interest working with any other coach. No credible coach would take the job here under those circumstances. Likewise ,no new GM would have Ruff in place very long with his track record. Both must go for this team to have any success. Trades will not mask the dire need for a change that should have occured years ago.
