Sabres shaking up lineup for Jets game

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Without a practice sandwiched in between their loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday and their game tonight against Winnipeg, the Buffalo Sabres took to the ice hours ahead of their tilt with the Jets with some apparent changes to the lineup.

The biggest news of the day is the fact that Jordan Leopold will be watching the game from the press box as a healthy scratch. According to WGR's Paul Hamilton, that is the first time Leopold has been taken out of the lineup since he signed as a free agent. Leopold's lapse on the Penguins' third goal on Sunday is one that the defenseman called an "easy read" and one that he puts totally on himself. That play may be the catalyst for Leopold watching the game from up high.

In his place, T.J. Brennan has been inserted in to the lineup in a fairly large role. Noted for his work on the power play in Rochester, Brennan took his place along the blue line with the Sabres' top PP unit during the morning skate.

Buffalo finally capitalized on their first power play opportunity in the month of February on Sunday. That is their lone conversion in 32 total chances with a man advantage in the second month of the season.

They'll be up against a Winnipeg Jets team that rank dead last in killing penalties. Although they're among the NHL's top-ten in least penalty minutes accrued per game, Winnipeg have allowed opponents to score on 15-of-44 total chances in 2013. That equals a PK rate of just 65.9-percent on the season.

There is an additional change to the top PP unit. Marcus Foligno will be a part of that group as a forward. Thomas Vanek and Tyler Ennis are the other forwards, while Jason Pominville continues on the unit along the blue line.

Drew Stafford has only one goal this season, and will conceivably lose some ice time against Winnipeg. In the morning skate, Stafford was on the right wing of the fourth line, centered by Cody McCormick. John Scott was on the left side.

That gap on the right wing of the team's second line is likely filled by Pat Kaleta. He was skating with Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno on Tuesday morning. Ryan Miller will get the start in net yet again. He is 6-7-1 in 2013, allowing 2.91 goals per game on a .914 save percentage.

The healthy scratches for the Sabres are likely to be Leopold, Andrej Sekera and Mikhail Grigorenko.

Winnipeg is coming off a three-game homestand that saw them lose all three. Their last road game, February 9 at Ottawa, resulted in a 1-0 win for the Jets. Winnipeg is tied for the worst point total in the Eastern Conference (11), and sit below the Sabres in 14th place.

Pregame coverage of the game starts tonight on WGR Sports Radio 550 at 6 pm with Schopp and the Bulldog. You'll hear from head coach Lindy Ruff, defenseman T.J. Brennan, winger Drew Stafford and the benched Jordan Leopold.

Grigorenko
wow that didn't take long for ruff to shut him down. if he can't play for a losing team that needs any change it can get, he must really be another bust. Although since he was signed this year to sit, in two years he can go to a real team.
02/19/2013 1:01PM
Yawn.
Wake me when there's news.....
02/19/2013 1:04PM
Re: contract extension
why hasn't the "voice of the sabres" reported on ruff's three year contract extension that was signed after regier was signed? too close to home?
02/19/2013 1:06PM
grigorenko
How is the kid suppose to improve and get acclimated to the nhl if he doesn't play? Same old sabres and same old ruff!
02/19/2013 1:19PM
Hmmm
playing yet another team that is struggling, which means we'll lose. Seems like every time we play a team that has been struggling needs a win, they beat us. That tells me that they are hungrier than we are. 1 for 32 on the power play... why weren't things shaken up before this?
02/19/2013 1:27PM
It won't last a period.
Ruff won't stay with it. Stafford will pout. Kaleta deserves a chance to play up but Lindy will dump him for Stafford no matter what. Ought to take the 'A " off Stafford who won't do the dirty things like forecheck and block shots. He is a lockeroom cancer who's more concerned with how his tatoos look than his play on the ice.

Please consult your programs for the following scatches...
Cross out number 3 Jordan Leopold, cross out number 44 Andre SUCKera, and cross out number 25 whatsisname the Russian. Ladies and Gentleman, please refrain from having any hope that Lindy Ruff EVER be fired and abandon the concept of a decent trade fromDarcy Regier. New York State Regulations prohibit smoking in this arena. Good luck.
02/19/2013 1:48PM
Does Terry know........
that his sons favorite player (neighbor and guitarist) is being demoted ?
02/19/2013 2:14PM
the silver lining....
is that Jochen Hecht is still gonna play! phew. Lindy has it all together, huh? I feel a lot better with my last place team knowing that we're keeping that kid out.
02/19/2013 2:16PM
Pominfraud
It's nice to see that Lindy holds guys like Leopold accountable but not the worst captain in the history of the team. Wow pominfraud.... pee yoo!!
02/19/2013 2:35PM
Mikhail Grigorenko
Might as well just sit Mikhail Grigorenko because all those goons will score goals. wow.
02/19/2013 2:41PM
grigorenko
Why bench him again?Stafford should be benched.
02/19/2013 2:45PM
Pat Kaleta.....
2nd line winger!?!....what joke of a team. I'm done wasting my time watching this team this year.
02/19/2013 2:48PM
Should have traded Leopold a year ago
Leopold should have been sent out of town a whole entire year ago...at the very least in the offseason. You can't trade him now because he is so terrible and old that he has zero value to any other team. When the Sabres got him they should have realized that they would only get 2 decent years out of him. Just another example in a long line of players that the Sabres have held onto for far too long. How many of these continued bad trades, signings and missed opportunities by Regier is Pegula going to tolerate?
02/19/2013 3:00PM
Sratches
Why the hell is Grigorenko scratched again? Lindy plays Scott every game and he does nothing. This team is not at all 'Tougher' to play against and they still have problems with depth scoring. The kid will learn nothing this way. I am a Lindyfan and always will be it's just his time to go.
02/19/2013 3:04PM
Kaleta on 2nd line?
Really, this is better than Grenko on it? Man this is a dangerous road to go down.
02/19/2013 3:48PM
Grigorenko is Doomed
Well, add Grigorenko to the list of players Ruff has or is destroying. This team won't make the playoffs-Grigorenko should be featured prominently, not watching games from the press box.
02/19/2013 3:49PM
why
did we keep grigorenko up here if he's going to be a healthy scratch. no, he's not a superstar right away. but this team is losing anyway. he's not going to progress at all without playing time. bench stafford, put grigorenko out there with someone who can create some offense instead of with john scott and jochen hecht before giving up on him.
02/19/2013 4:15PM
Is there a reason???
Grigorenko is scratched again??? I may understand against a team like Boston where they want Scott and McCormick in the lineup, but no excuse against just about the worst team in the league, at home nonetheless. What was the point of keeping the kid in Buffalo if Lindy won't play him. Soon the excuse will be "they need to win games" to make that futile playoff push again. Plenty of Hect no doubt - and Grigorenko will sit and collect dust in th press box. Way to use your 1st round pick Lindy!!!
02/19/2013 4:26PM
don't care
I don't care anymore...this is a bad team and I will no longer support them...they are boring, soft and not a playoff team. Bye-Bye!
02/19/2013 5:27PM
what the Sabres need
IS A COACHING SHAKEUP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up Terry!!! Get your head out of your a_s!
02/19/2013 5:36PM
Good
Would be a good fit on the fifth line. 0% Passion, Hunger, Intensity or Sand!
02/19/2013 7:10PM
What a Relief
I thought, for just a minute, that someone got fired.
02/19/2013 7:11PM
Hope the Sabres lose
Gerble over Grigorenko? You got to be kidding. Grigorenko should have been returned to junior. Ruff has ruined him already. FIRE RUFF!!!
02/19/2013 7:15PM
The only shakeup I await
Is a blockbuster trade. What are they waiting for???
02/19/2013 9:32PM
Jets: Bigger Faster Stronger than Walmart...
Creampuffs can't handle Jets size and speed. Walmart has no where to go but GOLF!!! DON'T FIRE RUFF REGEIR!!! FORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEE!!!!!!
02/19/2013 9:34PM
PAVELIC ELITE... Miller Good enough to get Walmart BEAT!!!
HOW DOES LAST PLACE TASTE PEGULA!!!???? DON'T FIRE RUFF REGEIR!!! FORRRRRRRRRRE VER 44444
02/19/2013 9:37PM
What now?
A loss to Winnipeg at home. Season over.
02/19/2013 10:16PM
Looks like it worked!
We only lost by 1 goal. I am pretty sure Lindy would call that progress. Lots of picture perfect turnovers tonight. Thanks for coming through for all the fans.
02/20/2013 6:53AM
meet the new Sabres
... same as the old Sabres. At least when the crooks and the NHL ran the club there was an excuse for distraction. Now with a new "committed" owner and unlimited resources this is the true low point, no sense making R&R more uncomfortable.
02/20/2013 7:35AM
Hey Terry
This is the team Regeir put together and have spent alot of money on. Guess what? They stink they are awful and you went and extended his contract. You now have egg on your face. What a mistake. You should have shown Ruff and Regeir the door. Why do you insist on keeping thse guys and hoping for a different result? It's not going to happen. There is a 15 year tract record. Look at it and use your common sense.
02/20/2013 7:43AM
where is soupy, brier and drury???
long gone are those days. We should have dumped Hecht, Pomminville long ago. Put that C on someone who has heart "Kaleta" I disagee with most that Ruff is the problem. Although i do remember a few games back when he had only 5 skaters on the ice after pulling miller for the extra attacker. I just think this team lacks the talent. what i think Lindy needs to do is roll up his sleeves and go back to the drawing board with some of these young guys. The D is astoundingly terrible. Come on Darcy make some trades.
02/20/2013 9:13AM
Ryan Miller Will Win The Stanley Cup
But not with the Sabres! I can see Ryan Miller doing the same thing as Hasek and eventually leave the Sabres and go to a team that has a "desire" and the "urgency" to win in front of their goaltender. I'll give Ryan Millerkudos for saying at the PostGame interview how the fans deserved better than what they are seeing at home this year.
02/20/2013 9:18AM
Minimum Wage or Thousands of Dollars
My wife works at a pet store where most employees make "minimum wage" (they know they are guaranteed to get paid this amount). However, they can make more money by way of commission if they sell animals and merchandise. Some employees do not care and will not put in the extra effort of making sales because they are satisfied with their guaranteed minimum wage check. It seems to me that most of the Sabres are playing to just receive their guaranteed paycheck of thousands of dollars per game and not bother putting in the extra effort.
02/20/2013 10:03AM
Lindy
You have turned this team into the laughing stock of the NHL. So glad your line shake up worked so well
02/20/2013 10:11AM
Hard to watch!
gets worse every year, keeping the same unproductive players and picking up some others. can't believe Scott, Gerble, Hecht,Stafford, Sekera and Enroth are still here, flippin amazing. Does this owner not see(and Smell) the product put on the ice? This coach is a joke, can't motivate his players and seems to choke off the growth of the rest. PLEASE FIRE RUFF, we've had enough.
02/20/2013 10:57AM
Booo
Nice for these kids going to the game who only want to root for their favorite player, etc, that they have to wonder why these so called fans wearing their favoirte players jersey are booing the Sabres.

When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
