Sabres Fire Head Coach Lindy Ruff



The Buffalo Sabres have announced that they have fired Head Coach Lindy Ruff. The team made the announcement Wednesday afternoon before the team was to depart for Toronto for a game against the Maple Leafs Thursday night.

There is no word yet on who will be Ruff's replacement will be. He was the longest tenured coach in the NHL. The Sabres are off to a slow start in a shortened season, sitting in last place in the Northeast Division, sitting at 6-10-and-1.

It's about time. I think he's a good coach. One of the best but he has over stayed his welcome in Buffalo. Bring in Marc Crawford. He can get this team going.

That is a great start. The players were making a statement last night. They wanted him fired. That is the only way to explain their pathetic effort. I don't condone it, after all they are getting paid to play hard, but Lindy has been ruining players for years and finally he is out. I just hope they find someone that will use players at their strengths instead of trying to force some stupid system upon them whether it fits them or not. Go Sabres!

I had to shut off the show!! We've been waiting for this for soooooo long, it should be a happy day!! Instead, I'm hearing bleeding hearts boo hooing for "all Mindy has done." What a load, he's hurt this organization, and catfished the new owner this whole time. All he did was cost us money, players, and any hope of winning a cup.

The captain has gone down with the ship. The team still lacks a top talent and has at best mediocore B liners as a team.Most of our A liners would be lucky to be a B liner on some other teams except for Vanak. But when you need Vanak in the playoffs he disappears.

This move was about shifting focus from Darcy to Lindy. I think Lindy is a great coach and will be fine out there, but after so many years the R&R show needed to go. Now.. I think if Lindy Ruff could have played we would have been a better team. He only has one really good player Vanek and you wonder why the team stinks. I am really disappointed with Pegula. He keeps the general manager that hasn't got us any great talent and fires the guy that has to coach them. Oh well as a Lindy Ruff fan I am half hoping they continue to stink so everyone knows it wasn't him. I hope the next coach knows how to teach professional athletes how to do what they have been doing since they were 4 and 5 because I guess that is the kind of coach we need. I hope the players are real proud of themselves.

Lindy Ruff
Feel sorry for Lindy because he has a bunch of overpriced underachieving babies to have dealt with. having coached in several youth sports and now being older, I can see where these babies got their pampering from....from the day they were born and cannot deal with or know how to handle adversity. They also can't accept the fact that they are the ones who stink. Let's see if the new coach can get them to play or expose them for who they really are!

Never a Super Star
It is obvious that Lindy Ruff was never a great or even an average player while his time in the NHL So how would a team expect him to teach young players to be great at the game when he never was himself. Last week when I saw him having the players doingpush ups on the ice where this is where the skills of hockey are taught. The gym is where the push ups shall be had !

Is this enough??
Now that everyone has gotten what they wanted and Ruff is fired do you honestly think this is going to make the difference this year? I wanted him let go too, but I'm not going to get in line for playoff tickets. This team is in need of an organizational change throughout and the players have to be a target also. We have watched a cycle for years waiting for the young players to become seasoned, and the same thing is happening now. The past is just repeating itself. Let's hope this is step one to the Sabres regaining the trust of the city that is dying for a winner

It all trickles down to Lindy but I can think of at least one more people who should be fired. Not to name names, but Darcy Regier comes to mind. I liked Lindy but he just can't do anything more for the Sabres, and hasn't done anything for many seasons now. This has been long overdue. Good luck, Lindy.

Lindy is a great guy personally…however, I’m glad to see that ownership and hopefully Regier finally woke up and realized this needed to happen. I just hope that they just don’t promote James Patrick to Head Coach and bring Teppo down to the benchfrom the press box. I would like to see Marc Crawford behind the bench… Mike D.

This is as low as it gets as a Sabres fan. We have a good owner, we thought with Ted Black we were on our way and we were. We have gone all the way to the bottom, but we ahve a pretty locker room! So Lindy is gone and no one is named to replace him not a good sign in the beginings of a short season. All the usall mid season names like Hitchcock and others are unavailable so I'm at a loss. i was so sure we would ride Lindy all the way to grave that I haven't even entertained any available replacements. So I ask who?

lindy was a great coach for years and will once again be one. the ream has been under lindys system .it seems to me hockey has changed over the last few years and lindy's system didn't match todays game.it became apparent that lindy's system and how to treat players has worn thin on any sabre or long time fan.this team is also rrespnceable for part of terrible season.lindy was a good coach but had lost the players ear.wish him all the best,but I finally see some changing of the guard.now darcy will have to get a new coach and if he blows this selection he will be shown the door.i think he would this team more by picking assest up .see how the rest of this season shapes up.nothing then he should be shown the door

Like Early Bowman, RUFF DID IT HIS WAY... never adjusted and FINALLY paid for it..
RUFF in a nutshell: was a controlling, overbearing coach who's greatest character flaw was his own arrogance. a dictator who didn't want threatening strong opinionated leaders on his roster but surrounded himself with mostly soft demure players who were just happy to be in the NHL. Regeir, a puppet to be sure, has the perfect personality as GM to surrender all power to Ruff. Utilizing his unlimited power and ARROGANCE, Ruff revelled in consistently THREATENING, punishing and tormenting star players; stifled young players devlopment, overplayed marginal players to further insult his talented players and coddled his large never ending supply of soft demure ones. He had complete control over roster decisions and drafting his style of player. Consequently, Year after year his teams lacked the character and "will to win" and it showed every SPRING in Wallmarts absence from post season play. His style NEVER worked and he couldn't change, ulike his idol, Scotty Bowman who was smart enough to adapt to realize THAT PLAYERS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS, Ruff NEVER learned and never adjusted and evolved into his own worst enemy. FINALLY someone noticed! But its still gonna be Fore ever untill Regeir is purged as well.

New Era Beginning
Sad to see Lindy go but it was time for a change, he didn't inspire or motivate the players anymore. But we have a lot to look forward to with Terry Pegula at the helm and all this young talent we have. Pegula should probably have fire him when he bought the team, all we need now is for him to get rid of Darcy Regier. The sky is the limit!!!!!

I had lost interest in watching my beloved team. They were boring, frustrating, and wallowing in mediocrity. The Sabres were never going to win the Cup with Ruff. I am so excited to be interested in my team again!

No matter how good a coach Lindy Ruff was, no team in this day and age can expect to keep a coach for this length of time and have him be effective. It was a change that was long overdue. Awesome - Great Coach - For Someone Else
The time has come, I hear my brother Cheering from Ashville, NC. He never thought it was a good move, while i held on for years because of my loyalty to a former player that has some sparks of greatness here and there as a coach. This has been a long time coming, he'll do well elsewhere and we are finally better off without him. My guess is he takes a few years off before running to a Canadian Team

Farewell to a long time friend and all time hockey great, you will be missed.
I think that this is a sad day in the history of Buffalo hockey. To blame one person for the teams current position is unjust to say the least. I wish Lindy all the best and still remember seeing him play in the Aud as a kid. He is truly an icon in the Sabres franchise. I would love to see the Sabres bounce back and have a winning season for sure.

Firing the coach. . .
I believe Lindy Ruff is as good a coach as the talent he has on his roster. When he had talent he won(Check President's Cup season)when he doesn't he loses. We had a roster after that season that was maybe one player away from the Cup. What did we do; sell off all the best players we had on the roster. We need a GM that can identify talent and then an owner that will spend the money to purchase it.

Now let the players play to their abilities...
I think one of Ruff's biggest downfalls was forcing players to change their natural abilities. It's fine to get players to play two-way hockey, but some players' strengths are in their offensive skills. I've seen over the years that finesse players get stifled by being forced to play too much two-way hockey. It's happened time and time again. A good example was Max Afinogenov. Sure he didn't "play the system" (still not clear on what that was) but he was thrown on lines with players who couldn't complement and support his skills (this is still happening lately with current players). Max was exciting to watch but was forced to play a style that he couldn't adapt to. A good coach finds a way to get the most out of players based on their natural skills and abilities, and finds a way to balance lines to support each others' strengths. I think Lindy is great at many things...but he wasn't good at that.

SAD TIMES IN MANY WAYS
Definitely a day of mixed emotions, didn't think Lindy's firing would bother me as much as it is even though a change was necessary. Maybe it wasn't the right change but as many have said, easier to fire one individual who has been a Sabre for years than 25 spoiled players who have everything catered to them. I hope that Lindy does feel some level of relief, I hope that he stays committed to the area and our community because he is a good person. Hope I am wrong but give it three to five games and this team will be back to playing the way it did during all of the losses so far this season.

It's about time!
To all you whiners out there who love Ruff and have blnders on to the fact that hes a coach w/a completely stale as 7 day old bread message. He played favorites (Hecht, Connolly, Sekera and Tallinder) constantly while ruining the careers of potential good players (Luke Adams) or never easing up on great players (Vanek and Miller). YEah that Lindy hes such a stud coach now isnt he? You fans who cant seem to get over the fact that hes not won ANYTHING of consequence, are happy to have mediocrity season in and season out just so you can say "Lindy Ruff is a good guy." This is half the problem with the city of Buffalo, so many accept less than instead of demanding better and plod along as things get worse but then whine and complain the minute someone suggests change. You clueless wonders you. You probably vote Democrat too and are the biggest hypocrites around. Ruff needed to go and a long time ago. Now lets hope Regiers next, this team needs an aenema!

Overrated
Is how Ruff will be remembered. Darcy Regier is 1000% wrong in saying that he will/should be remembered as a great coach. A good coach definitely...a very good coach at times during his tenure here. A great coach absolutely not. Ruff stayed right here when equal perhaps even better coaches were fired...Hitchcock, Laviolette, Torterella, Randy Carlisle. Ruff was in no way, shape, or form better than those coaches. These men won cups and not by getting lucky. As good? Well maybe, but there is no way Ruff should have coached here for as long as he did without having anything really tangible to show for. Al Arbor was as awful of a comparison as Regier could have sighted a few years back. Arbor won 4 Stanley Cups so yes it made sense to keep him with the Islanders for as long as possible. Like Schopp said 3 years ago...longevity should never be confused with greatness. Ever. Ruff instead is/was a good coach that was overrated. Unfair to Ruff is that he is perhaps the most overrated coach in the history of the NHL. Many said a few years back that if fired here Ruff would immediately go somewhere else and win a Stanley Cup. That is not likely to happen unless of course that team is loaded with tons and tons of talent. Lindy Ruff. Good coach? Yes. Very good coach? Perhaps. Overrated? Most definitely. Good luck to you Ruff wherever you end up. Thank you for your time here. The Buffalo Sabres however, from this day moving forward will have better days ahead without you.

If you clowns actually knew anything about the game you'd know about Rolston. Too bad for Lindy the sub-performance of players, not to mention Sullivan and GR's afternoon got him axed. And those bone heads had the nerve to say on radio they were shocked and saddened? For those of you who don't remember, besides Hasek, he took you to the cup with a group of less than star quality players. But, much like Lindy that team had character, grit, determination and played with a chip on thier shoulder. This team has lots of talent but no grit. Try as he might, Lindy couldn't light a fire under thier asses. Lindy also took you to two other conf finals but due to defensive injuries the cup ended up in Carolina. That was the last time he had character players (Drury, Briere, McKee, etc.) Instead of support you so-called fans, chose to run him out. Remember when you ran Bowman out too? I think he won at least one other cup after didn't he? Good Luck Lindy. I'm sad to see you go without hoisting the cup here but I'm sure a ton of weight is now off your shoulders.

of nothing! He should have been in the job even half that time. Sad part is nothing will change by removing one coach for another. Sabres have no all star players similar to the Bills. Different coach, same bull.
