James van Riemsdyk scored twice and Dion Phaneuf added a goal as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Sabres on Thursday 3-1, putting a damper on Ron Rolston's first game as interim head coach.
Tyler Ennis opened the scoring with his 6th of the season, tucked a shot under the crossbar from inside the near faceoff circle. It stayed that way until 1:14 of the 2nd period when Dion Phaneuf blasted the puck by Miller. Steve Ott appeared to give Buffalo the lead later in the 2nd, but the goal was waived off due to a goaltender interference call on Kevin Porter.
Later in the period, Toronto went up 2-1 on van Riemsdyk's 10th with less than two minutes to play. van Riemsdyk finished off a 2-on-1 break with Phil Kessel to give the Leafs the one-goal advantage heading to the final period. He netted his 2nd goal of the evening at the 14:28 mark of the final frame to put the Leafs up 3-1.
The Sabres (6-11-1, 13 pts.) are back in action Saturday against the New York Islanders at the First Niagara Center at 7 p.m. Hear the call on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
