Beilein remembers his WNY roots

Former Canisius College and current University of Michigan head basketball coach John Beilein joined Sal Capaccio on Sports Talk Saturday this weekend to talk about his time spent in Western New York, his coaching career, and his 7th-ranked Wolverines.

Beilein was born in Niagara County, grew up in Western New York and also coached at Erie Community College before moving on his coaching career.

Among the highlights of the interview:
  • Beilein revealed he is still a Sabres and Bills fan
  • The NCAA rules he needed to abide by when it came to discussing and coaching his own son, Patrick, who was recruited to play college basketball and eventually played for Beilein at West Virginia.
  • What makes his current Michigan team so good and guard Trey Burke so special.
Michigan faces Illinois Sunday afternoon.

Great WNY Connection
Great to hear the interview. I work on campus in Ann Arbor, and it is great to know there is the WNY connection in the basketball program. Can do a little more with that Michigan athletic budget than at Canisius though!

good job john
Great to hear from John, have known him for over 40 years from our Newfane days. One coach who actually cares about his players not just for Basketball purposes!! An asset to any community as a person and coach at any level. To bad he couldn't havecame to UB and improved their program..

When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
