Bills won't tender WR Nelson

As the new coaching staff continues to get more comfortable at One Bills Drive, the changes from the 2012 roster to the one they will field in 2013 continue as well.

The Buffalo Bills announced Sunday that they will not tender restricted free agent wide receiver David Nelson, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent come March 12.

Nelson, a former undrafted free agent out of Florida, worked his way up the depth chart to get a legitimate amount of playing time in his second and third seasons. His third and last season with Buffalo, however, ended when Nelson suffered a torn ACL in the team's season opener against the New York Jets.

“We spoke with David Nelson’s agent this morning and informed him that we will not tender David,” GM Buddy Nix said.

He is the second restricted free agent the Bills announced that they are going to walk away from. 2012 starter Donald Jones was told that he would not receive a tender from Buffalo in February as well.

Nelson responded to the news on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

In three seasons, Nelson totaled 94 catches for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns. With both he and Jones now off the roster, the Bills are left with only three receivers that started 2012 on their opening game roster. That list includes Stevie Johnson, T.J. Graham and Brad Smith.

The Bills also have three other receivers on the roster that were added throughout 2012. Marcus Easley, Kevin Elliot and Chris Hogan all still remain on the roster.

Load up on "d"
Why pay receivers when you got nobody to throw the ball to them.

Whattttttttttttttttttt?
No Ruvelle? omggggggggggggggg what will we do?- sounds like the team is going on the "cheap" for receivers? maybe gonna sign a "big" name and "BIG" money receiver??

We wanted change....
....and here it comes. Thank you David Nelson for your efforts. And thank you to the Bills for doing their level best to evaluate the talent on this roster and improve it. No settling for the David Nelsons and Donald Jones of the NFL. I like it.

if we had decent management
running both the Bills and Sabres we wouldnt be in this mountain of total imcompetence. i mean please how did we end up with these scouts and general managers? what a total mess in Buffalo!!! the fans deserve better then keystone cops operations!
02/24/2013 6:45PM
So who are you going to throw the ball to besides Stevie and Chandler, Buddy.........
T.J. Graham is an overpaid joke, and how often did you throw the ball to Brad Smith? Ruvell Martin is a garbage time player. Marcus Easley only played on the Special Teams when he wasn't hurt. Chris Hogan spent 2012 on the practice squad. Elliot isessentially an unknown commodity. Russ, please elevate Whaley now, and send Buddy Nix packing. He is a senile old fool that needs to head into the sunset.

We wanted change...
Agreed. David Nelson is a fan favorite and I'm somewhat saddened to see him go, but we have to move on from our stable of #3 WRs and go get one that actually is a legitimate threat to complement Stevie.

I WHine
and I whine and I whine and I whine and I whine. I never get tired of myself. When I do, I punch my mother. Then I whine and whine about how I wish pro sports where more like x-box. Then I whine. FORE EVER FORE!!!
02/24/2013 11:24PM
Who cares!
So long, Jones and he were nothing special...
02/24/2013 11:45PM
James James James
James Ziolkowlki, "fore ever fore", you have given up your "season tickets" over a thousand times in the last four years? Hos do you expect anyone to take you seriously? Especially considering you NEVER HAD SEASON TICKETS TO BEGIN WITH!!! You are a pure idiot.
02/25/2013 3:16AM
Well......
So much for our running game. A good chunk of the shine should fall off CJ and Fred now. Nelson and Jones were great downfield blockers. Something tells me this team is going to be a bigger joke than Rolston to the Sabres.

Bill Morgan
could you change your name to smelly dungball on the Buffalo News comment section. There is nothing really wrong with the name Bill Morgan, it's just that smelly dungball is a more appropriate name in conjunction with your posts. Thank you.
02/25/2013 5:55AM
Bumsfan
Bills and Sabres are both at the bottom. Maybe should be demoted to minor leagues.
02/25/2013 6:15AM
Uh-oh.
Jesus is already deep at wideout. Sorry, David, it's going to have to be Satan and the Patriots for you.
02/25/2013 6:18AM
really?
How much would the 6-5 receiver want? I don't see how this move can make this team any better. He's a big receiver who can move the chains and wouldn't cost all that much. What's the reasoning behind this idiotic decision?
02/25/2013 7:30AM
Re: Well......
So you would evaluate WRs based on their blocking skills? And Spiller's season was strictly a result of Downfield Blocking? I don't know if the "Bills fans who will complain no matter what the team does and try to make it sound like their opinion is based on facts" group has a president, but I'd nominate you. Downfield blocking. Really.

No Big Deal
I liked Nelson too...... but the team hasn't made the playoffs in 13 years...... we've had back to back 6 - 10 seasons with Nelson...... we won't get better records until we get better coaches and better players. I think we finally have better coaches.... now let's get better players to go with that.
02/25/2013 9:32AM
Bill Morgan
That's probably not even his real name.....if you recall....on the "old" Buffalo news he used to be "Dan Morgan".....now it's "Bill Morgan"....what's your real name anyway??? Only thing for sure is that he's a nutjob that needs to keep his nose out of the Buffalo news and keep it in the dog dung he picks up at some park in California
02/25/2013 9:37AM
would have kept him as a #3 or #4
need a big time WR with stevie... as far as david, i would have kept him as a #3/#4... over brad smith any day. the guy was great at moving the chains, seemed to make clutch catches especially on 3rd downs, and was never afraid to give his body up over the middle even when he knew he was going to get hit. i thought he had some upside and was looking forward to seeing him this season. still pissed that the bills worked out last season danario alexander and passed on him.
02/25/2013 12:07PM
as long as
as long as the patriots don't sign him im ok with the move. BUT if the patriots sign him....that means hes worth it and will prove once again the bills cannot evaluate talent
02/25/2013 2:11PM
Bad Move Unless
the Bills find another big receiver who can catch AND block downfield. Nelson was good in both respects and he has a large enough build that some commentators thought he was a TE--a position at which we are sorely lacking. I would have rather kept him than the other backup receivers.
02/25/2013 5:17PM
"GUNS OF MARRONE!!!" KEEP FIRING!!! BEASTS RISIN - RISIN!!!!

02/25/2013 5:36PM
FORE EVER A POLACK
Someone kill that guy, please.
02/25/2013 6:47PM
Do the Bills have other Plans?
So we won't tender David's contract, hmmmm. What R we going to do, try signing and pay $$$ for a big name WR when we don't even have a QB (FitzTragic) can't even get him let alone Stevie the ball!!!! Come on now Bills Brass!!!!
02/25/2013 9:07PM
You must be kidding-
If you honestly think re-signing David Nelson was important to this team. He's nice guy and all but this team needs to get better at every position and the receiving corps stink as a whole. Why keep anyone who's been here who hasn;t done anything in 3 years. We stink- there is no-one on this roster they NEED to keep.
02/26/2013 7:49AM
Team Can't Stop Anyone
Other than the fact we have no defense, no offense and inconsistent special teams, we will do fine. Keep thinking analytics folks. Some diversion. Team is in disarray.
02/26/2013 9:37AM
Did you ever think?
That the Walmart Guy is right, just saying. Forever whatever it is. What do you do?
02/28/2013 9:36AM
