Break out the NHL draft previews

At least I know the routine, thanks to the Buffalo Bills.  When all hope is lost in a season, start reading up on the draft.  That’s where the Sabres 4-0 home ice loss to the New York Islanders left me.

Good news  Sabres fans.  If they turn out to be one of the worst teams in the NHL this season, there should  be a silver lining in the form of an impact player in the 2013 draft.

The top three prospects are considered by many to be cornerstone pieces for a franchise.  One team’s head of amateur scouting told ESPN.com’s Craig Custance there might be six guys that could change the fortunes of a team.

Another scout said he thinks there will be ten impact players in the draft.

The prized trio of the group are Nathan Mackinnon, Seth Jones and Jonathan Drouin.

Mackinnon is a 5-11, 179 pound center who plays for Halifax in the Quebec Major Junior League.  He has 28 goals and 69 points in 41 games.  Last season Mackinnon recorded 31 goals and 78 points in 58 games.

The hype machine on Mackinnon has been in full force for the last couple of years.  He is considered a franchise center with tremendous skating ability and a combination of skill and grit.  Some scouts believe he is strong enough, quick enough and powerful enough to play against NHL competition right now.

Drouin is a teammate of Mackinnon’s in Halifax.  Drouin is 5’11”, weighs 176 pounds and plays left wing.  He comes from NHL stock, as his Dad Jude played more than 600 games with 4 different teams in his NHL career.

Drouin has absolutely exploded this season, leading with Quebec League with 36 goals and 93 points in just 42 games.  Last season the Quebec native had just 7 goals and 29 points in 33 games.

Even though he’s a winger, Drouin is considered a tremendous playmaker, as evidenced by his 57 assists this season.  He has sky rocketed up the draft boards while exhibiting a high skill level and making numerous highlight reel plays.

The other player in the big three is defenseman Seth Jones, who plays for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League.  A native of Plano, Texas, Jones is a big dude, standing at 6’4” and weighing 206 pounds.  He has 9 goals and 41 points in 43 games this season.  He missed some action to play in the World Junior Championships, where he was a member of the gold medal winning USA club.

To go along with his size, Jones is said to be at an elite level with his skating and skill.  He comes from an athletic background as well.  Jones’ dad is former NBA player Popeye Jones.

Keep in mind the NHL draft lottery has changed in the new CBA.  All 14 teams that miss out on the playoffs are eligible for the first overall selection.  Under the old rules a team could move up no more than four spots so the only clubs that could have gotten the first selection were the ones that finished with one of the five worst records in the league.

Under the old system, the team finishing with the worst record had a 48% chance of winning the lottery.  Now the odds have dropped to 25%.

The odds haven't changed.
The odds are the same this year, but the lottery winner gets to pick first overall instead of just moving up 4 spots. http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/story/?id=416279

Why not get them both?
Time for a big move that puts some serious talent into this franchise. Pull of what Vancouver did many years ago, and draft Mackinnon AND Drouin.

Correction, Lottery has not Changed
Good essay, but a correction to the report: The NHL decided to retain the old draft lottery system this year. Please see-- http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013-02-18/nhl-draft-lottery-2013-odds-no-change-for-this-season-top-pick

Help from the draft?
What a joke to think that with a high pick, maybe the 1st or 2nd, that the Sabres would utilize that player. Grigorenko is just what the Sabres wanted in last years draft and is a player that is completely under utilized. He needs to be on the ice and playing every game, not playing on the 4th line for 6 minutes a game or worse yet sitting in the press box, get him on the ice. This team needs a spark and he could be it, but the Sabres won't find out if they don't get him in the line up with someone other than the 4th line.....Play Him NOW!

Regier will get it wrong
If he in fact is still the GM come June. If we are to get any sort of Mercy he will be s**t canned as soon as the Sabres are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Granted the last time the Sabres were terrible enough to have a shot at the top pick it was that screwey lottery scenario where Pittsburgh ended up getting Crosby. Still that year, Regier picked Zagrapan who was so awful and pitiful that he is not even playing professional hockey anymore. I'll get my hopes up for the draft when and only when a different Sabres GM is drafting players. Right now I'm more intrigued about how long Chicago can keep this win streak going.

At least I know the routine, thanks to the Buffalo Bills....
Will the Bills bashing on WGR EVER end? Don't forget Howard, the routine is also the same at WALMART in THE SELECTIONS, because Darcy Regeir and his TOTAL FAILURE of a scouting staff will be drafting some more Armias, Staffords, WEENNISES and Gerbees... FORE us foreeever 4 eth...

I'm not that far yet talking draft
OH, OH, OH, O'REILLY is what I'm talking about right now. This season isn't over yet. It's time for Darcy to wake up and make trades to get out of train wreck mode and move toward a playoff spot. There is time. There are 29 games left.

wow the draft talk
let see how the did sabres from 97 to o8 did in the draft lets take 1st 3 round of draft 45 picks 11 players that played in nhl 1 star in 45 picks o 2nd rd on peters. they could have pk subban, nick foligon, malin lucic, claude giroux and erik karlsson here a small look at who they could have pick. Regier has done a bad job a gave us bad picks so why would sabres fan be happy with him drafting any more fire him get a new GM in here. Hey take the time and look yourself and look see how bad it is.

Sabres x-fan
sabres have enough small forwards and would ruin these players like they have done for years. Jones would be the player I want them to get, then we could get rid of some of the slugs we call defensemen.
