No Shana-ban - Your call?

Charlie Coyle's hit on Matt Stajan drew a major penalty, but no supplemental discipline from Brendan Shanahan and the NHL.

You make the call.

BAN!
BAN! this should be a multi-game ban.
02/28/2013 7:19AM
It was late
But it was his shoulder that made the head contact. No futher discipline is warrented.
02/28/2013 7:31AM
Shoulder!
Looks like he finished his check with his shoulder. Should we take hitting out of the game?
02/28/2013 7:44AM
what a joke
Shanahan is such a joke. If that's not intent to knock someone out, then I don't know what it. Pathetic
02/28/2013 7:48AM
Intentional
Puck was long gone....he went for his head. Completely intentional.
02/28/2013 7:52AM
How can it not be?
It's a total head shot. There was no ban because that's exactly the kind of hit Shanahan would have made when he was playing. It may have been legal then but it's not now.
02/28/2013 7:53AM
Shanahan Clueless
Still...the guys a joke a league disciplinarian. If he was in office when Chris Neil gave that cheap shot to Chris Drury years ago, Shanahan probably wouldve called him to congratulate him on finishing his check.
02/28/2013 8:03AM
Typical
Definitely a head shot. Definitely a suspension. SO INCONSISTENT!!
02/28/2013 8:03AM
Upward lunge with shoulder
After watching it repeatedly, it seems to me that Coyle made simultaneous contact with his arm and shoulder, so the face was a target. He also seemed to have raised up into the hit which would put the point of the shoulder pad squarely on the nose/jaw ofStajan. From this angle it is hard to believe he was not aware of the area he was hitting and deserves a suspension if the NHL is truly worried about player safety!
02/28/2013 8:04AM
Shanahan is a joke
Shoulder right into his chin. What is there to debate??? It's a hit to the head
02/28/2013 8:24AM
I mean really??
Clearly a direct intentional hit targeting the head. There is no need for that type of play at this level.
02/28/2013 8:24AM
It is not keleta
If that was keleta 2 games!!
02/28/2013 8:24AM
shanny
no more borderline calls. if it looks malicious you punish. that was a cheap shot. no need for his arm to be that high
02/28/2013 8:34AM
What!?
Obvious headhunting, lead with his shoulder into his face, no movement directly prior to the hit. Should have been a ban.
02/28/2013 8:39AM
No suspension
Coyle is not spelled K.A.L.E.T.A.
02/28/2013 8:56AM
Blind man walking...
Shanahan must be going blind, really cheap and deliberate shot, Shanahan is so inconsistent....
02/28/2013 9:01AM
The NHL is a JOKE!
Hit to the head. No question.
02/28/2013 9:05AM
intentional hit
thats how it looks to me
02/28/2013 9:09AM
Looks Good to Me
Looks like Good old fashion hockey to me. It is a contact sport. Should show it to the Sabres Defense.
02/28/2013 9:12AM
No Ban
In the game it was an "elbow" major but it wasn't even an elbow by Coyle. His shoulder hits his face. Happens all the time. He was finishing his check. If you don't like it then hits in NHL should be banned.
02/28/2013 9:38AM
Intent
These guys have been playing a high speed game since they were kids and definitely know at the pro level how long is too long before a player is "off limits".If you have to take two strides or in this case glide a good 10 to 12 feet before you hit a guy that has already gotten rid of the puck then he is off limits to a legal hit...you can finish checks to a certain degree but Coyle knew in an instant that backing off was the decision he should have made but instead chose to carry on into Stajan anyway and lifted his shoulder to gain an even harder hit which shows intent to injure. He should get 5mins plus misconduct plus 2 games off.
02/28/2013 9:41AM
NO
Finished his check with his shoulder not the elbow. At least from this view
02/28/2013 9:49AM
technical
If you want to be technical his elbow stayed pretty low and made contact with the chest while his shoulder did the damage to the head. Head shot nonetheless. Hurts the case the Stajan was facing him and watched it land with no flinch or attempt to protect himself aside from raising his arms them lowering at the last second (why?).
02/28/2013 9:53AM
Give Me a Break
10 years ago this wouldn't even be a penalty. He hit him with more of his shoulder than an elbow. I don't even think Stajan was that hurt - he wanted to draw a penalty more than anything. The trip to the locker room was to make it look like he wasn't milking it. This league and the "men" in it have become demasculinated and weak.
02/28/2013 10:04AM
Ehh, It was close
You see the elbow movement going on around :27, but if you keep hitting the space bar you see it frame by frame, and the elbow never makes contact with the head during the hit. It looks like it might've whacked him when he was coming down, but that was probably incidental.
02/28/2013 10:17AM
Well, it's not a Buffalo player...
So y'know, that alone gets him off the hook...
02/28/2013 10:20AM
Shanahan is a Joke.
Why would you pick a former tough guys / border line dirty player at time to be your head of discipline. It's like hiring the mob boss as the police commissioner? The hit didn't look intentional, but if you want to put an end to serious head injuries in the NHL, if you hit a guy in the head, it's a suspension. Even if it is unintentional, a 1 or 2 game suspension minimum. Then players will actively make sure they don't hit a guy high, and there will be a lot less injuries, That's how you protect your players. Take a cue from the NFL get tough.
02/28/2013 10:38AM
Shanahan is terrible...
That's exactly the type of hit, well after the puck is played, that needs to be addressed and taken out of hockey. Minimum 5 games to set the example.
02/28/2013 10:47AM
really?!?
He should be suspended for an extended period of time. What a joke.
02/28/2013 10:49AM
Good Call
He comes a little high with the hit but he makes contact with his shoulder, not his elbow....and Stajan certainly embellishes the effect.
02/28/2013 10:58AM
Simple
To me this is a very easy call, it was clearly a hit to the head. It wasn't an elbow in my opinion, but a hit to the head nonetheless. I have seen Shanahan give out discipline on far less serious incidents. Based on the rules, Coyle deserved some sort of discipline.
02/28/2013 11:15AM
Re: No Call on Stajan Tuesday Night
Coyle should have gotten at least five games for that hit to the head on Matt. Matt passed the puck a good second at least before the hit and Coyle should have known better than to hit him, much like Chris Neil's hit on Drury six years ago.
02/28/2013 11:56AM
ridiculous
that's not even worth a penalty. shoulder to the chin the whole way in the video.
02/28/2013 12:08PM
NHL is a Joke
My son plays hockey at the Mite level right now double AA travel and watching his games with no checking and no garbage fighting is much more entertaining than watch grown men skate around trying to kill each other and then punch each other becuas eof good clean hits. Let alone garbage hits that should be eliminated from the game. Hockey post the 1st lockout was much better and made me appreciate talent. Where is the talent in throwing your body against another human being and doing damage? I like the physicality of the sport but only in the clean and correct way, Shannanhan is a joke and should be fired immediatley. maybe somebody like Lafontaine who had his career shortened by concussions should be the one in charge on punishment.
02/28/2013 12:27PM
Shanahan is a joke
Not the funny kind, just the bad kind.
02/28/2013 12:55PM
Matt Stajan hit
Shanahan and the NHL is a hypocritical JOKE on all of us.
02/28/2013 1:08PM
What a Joke!
Clearly a deliberate elbow to the head, along the glass non the less. Shanahan is a joke!
02/28/2013 1:59PM
Horrible
Let me guess, he is not a dirty player!! O.K. but it was a hit to the head and it needs to stop. I say take all hitting out of Hockey and it would be a much better game to watch.
02/28/2013 2:12PM
who cares...
really...
02/28/2013 2:13PM
who really cares...
really though... who cares
02/28/2013 2:41PM
Head Hunting
If that is NOT targeting the head what is??? Shanahan is a JOKE
02/28/2013 4:11PM
He Intentionally Drove His Shoulder Into His Face!!!
You are a totally A-HOLE Shanahan!!!
02/28/2013 4:38PM
Joke
Shanahan needs to go. If the NHL is really concerned about head injuries, Coyle would be suspended for awhile because his only intent here was to go at Stajan's head. Another reason this is a garbage league.
02/28/2013 4:50PM
Good no ban...
Good no suspension call, something I wanted to see the Sabres do this season, finish checks. Unfortunately it was a little high, and hit his chin, but then again, Stajan clearly saw him coming... brace yourself.
02/28/2013 4:56PM
no consistency
Shanahan was a good player ... he is a terrible NHL disciplinarian. His biggest failing is in displaying any sense of consistency. There is no rhyme or reason to the penalties he hands out or fails to hand out. Coyle should have received a suspension.
02/28/2013 5:17PM
Targeting the Head area...
Shanahan needs to be replaced I think he is lacking brain cells from his head area getting targeted. I want to watch good hockey not players skating around with scrambled eggs for brains.
02/28/2013 5:19PM
Shanahan's a joke
He throws his sholder into his head.
02/28/2013 5:22PM
Really?
Myers gets 3 games during the stretch run last April for a hit that appeared much tamer than what Coyle laid on Stajan, well after the latter had got rid of the puck, and nothing in terms of a suspension? C'mon, Shanny, you doing your Colin Campbell impersonation?
02/28/2013 6:24PM
suspend him
should be a suspension
02/28/2013 6:42PM
1 GAME AT LEAST
HEAD CONTACT WITH THAT FORCE SHOULD BE 1 GAME. THIS WAS NOT ACCIDENTIAL CONTACT. WE ARE TRYING TO CONTROL CONCUSSIONS. NO ACCOUNTABILITY FROM THE LEAGUE. THEY SPEAK FROM BOTH SIDES OF THEIR MOUTHS.
02/28/2013 6:53PM
Borderline
It's barely legal but it's legal. Can't prove he was targeting the head and it wasn't too late, also no elbow. Look out for Coyle Granlund and the freaking Wild in a couple years.

Comment :
When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
