How Kelsay retiring affects Bills' cap

(WGR 550) -- With Chris Kelsay's decision to retire from the National Football League, the Buffalo Bills will be getting some cap relief that could be useful over the next two weeks and beyond when free agency opens up on March 12.

The defensive end had two years left remaining on his contract. In 2013, he was set to count $4.975 million against the Bills' salary cap figure. In 2014, that number went up slightly to $4.995 million. Now that he's retired, the Bills will have two choices on how Kelsay will count against their cap.

The Bills aren't totally off the hook, but they are for the most part. Because he retired two years premature, his contract carries a prorated amount of $400,000 for each of the next two years.

The Bills can either elect to count the entire $800,000 against their 2013 cap and save a total of $4.175 million this year and the whole $4.995 million in 2014, or they can allow the $400,000 to take affect in both 2013 and 2014. If they choose the latter option, the Bills will save $4.575 million this season and $4.595 million in 2014.

What a waste of $$$$$$$$....
Couldn't understand why the Bills extened him in the 1st place when they had more pressing needs and he wassn't a major contributor anyhow

Salary Cap
I live for talking salary cap. I consider myself an amateur capologist.

Nice of the Bills to allow Kel- Say to save face and "retire" instead of cutting his mediocre buttt like all the other trash they've taken out so far... BUT DON'T STOP; KEEP FIRING!!! Lots more TRASH on that roster. VIVA MARRONE!!! BEASTS RISIN!! and FORE YOU EXTEND REGEIR FOREERVERfor!

This could help
Although I always liked Kelsay, he was never a game changer. He was just a solid consistent player. But, we need some explosion. Check free agency.

Good Luck Chris
To me he was a great guy on and off the field. Gave a great effort every time out. Will be missed in locker room. Unfortunately, he also represents one of the many bad draft choices this team makes that do not seem to pan out. He needed to be surrounded by better players. Get rid of the veteran QB and start fresh with a new QB. It can't get worse.

Worst Signing???
Maybe the extending of Kelsay was bad but I'd say the signing of Fitz out does Kelsay by a wide margin. We are stuck 10 mil for that piece of junk. Smith should be cut also.

I misread
I thought the title to the article was "How Kelsay retiring affects the cr@p", and I thought, well, at least Buscaglia is honest!

people do not understand Kelsay's game or what is expected of a LE in the NFL
why all the hating on Chris he was a solid LE, and did decent when they tried to move him to OLB he never was great but reliable is a good thing when you have so many holes in ur lineup, but i think they got to fire Buddy, and bring in someone that has abetter plan for the future, also hope new coaching staff has more input in the draft

Smith a great player
Smith can fill in at WR, could be a good back up QB, good return man, great Wildcat QB always gets the 1st down so yes he may have been over paid over the last two seasons but if he is used right by the coaching staff he is worth the money he is being paid, backup QB/WR, wildcat QB and return man i think is worth $4 million/yr
