Entering Thursday's game, Gerbe hadn't scored since March 10, 2012. The Sabres forward opened the scoring against the Panthers, finding the net just 6:30 into the game. Four and a half minutes later, Tyler Ennis made it a 2-0 game, picking up the loose puck and slamming a shot past Scott Clemmensen.
Florida responded moments later with a pair of goals in less than a minute. Drew Shore scooped up a rebound for a power play goal and Marcel Goc tied it up 56 seconds later. Goc gained possession following a Cody Hodgson turnover and stuffed the puck past Miller for his 2nd of the season. The Sabres stormed right back, however, when Gerbe drove the net, tucking a shot under the Panthers crossbar, eventually crashing into the backboards. Gerbe's 2nd of the game prompted the Panthers to make a goaltending chance, replacing Clemmensen with Jose Theodore. Steve Ott assisted on the goal, marking his 3rd of the evening.
The two sides skated into the 3rd period with Buffalo up 3-2, marking only the 2nd time all season the Sabres held the lead after 40 minutes. It stayed that way until 18:34 of the final frame when Brian Campbell beat his former teammate, Miller, on a shot right off the faceoff. Campbell's blast deflected off Andrej Sekera's body and ended up in the net, tying the score 3-3.
Following a scoreless overtime period, the Sabres won it in the shootout round thanks to goals by Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville. Both of Florida's shooters, Jonathan Huberdeau and Peter Mueller, were stopped by Miller. The Buffalo netminder finished with 40 saves in the win. The Sabres now return home to face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday at 3 p.m. Hear the call with Rick Jeanneret and Rob Ray on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
