Sabres Hold On For 4-3 Win Over Panthers in Shootout

Nathan Gerbe scored a pair of first period goals, his first two goals of the season, and the Sabres (8-12-1, 17 pts.) edged the Panthers 4-3 following a shootout on Thursday. The victory marked the first time Buffalo has won two straight road games this season.

Entering Thursday's game, Gerbe hadn't scored since March 10, 2012. The Sabres forward opened the scoring against the Panthers, finding the net just 6:30 into the game. Four and a half minutes later, Tyler Ennis made it a 2-0 game, picking up the loose puck and slamming a shot past Scott Clemmensen.

Florida responded moments later with a pair of goals in less than a minute. Drew Shore scooped up a rebound for a power play goal and Marcel Goc tied it up 56 seconds later. Goc gained possession following a Cody Hodgson turnover and stuffed the puck past Miller for his 2nd of the season. The Sabres stormed right back, however, when Gerbe drove the net, tucking a shot under the Panthers crossbar, eventually crashing into the backboards. Gerbe's 2nd of the game prompted the Panthers to make a goaltending chance, replacing Clemmensen with Jose Theodore. Steve Ott assisted on the goal, marking his 3rd of the evening.

The two sides skated into the 3rd period with Buffalo up 3-2, marking only the 2nd time all season the Sabres held the lead after 40 minutes. It stayed that way until 18:34 of the final frame when Brian Campbell beat his former teammate, Miller, on a shot right off the faceoff. Campbell's blast deflected off Andrej Sekera's body and ended up in the net, tying the score 3-3.

Following a scoreless overtime period, the Sabres won it in the shootout round thanks to goals by Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville. Both of Florida's shooters, Jonathan Huberdeau and Peter Mueller, were stopped by Miller. The Buffalo netminder finished with 40 saves in the win. The Sabres now return home to face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday at 3 p.m. Hear the call with Rick Jeanneret and Rob Ray on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

Major Midget
There was a Nathan Pygmie sighting tonight in Florida. What's next, a token Jochen Hecht appearence?
02/28/2013 10:37PM

"you can bet DINEEN won't come out flat"
FOREVER WRONG!!! Sure, I guess giving up TWO GOALS in the first 12 minutes is NOT COMING OUT FLAT!!! What an idiot! GERBE nets two douchebag and Ennis adds another!! I think I remember someone asking if they ever thought MR WALMART was right? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA Never, Never ever have I thought that. Who would believe this idiot?
02/28/2013 11:13PM
Rolston is a fool
So Grigerenko plays 5 minutes. A whole 20 seconds more than John Scott. We can only hope the fraud of a coach stays in town for a very short time!
02/28/2013 11:25PM
Miller Time!!!
Miller Time! Enuff said!
02/28/2013 11:52PM
Back-up goalie chased!
Wow, the Sabres chased a back-up goalie! They usually make the back-up look like Vezina.
03/01/2013 3:16AM
finally!!
4 goals must be some kind of record!!!
03/01/2013 4:46AM
You Should See The Cup (or Bowl) You Win...
for last place in the league. It's pretty breath taking. Literally, grundgy. If Buffulo and Florida aren't careful they may let Columbus slip away with it.

With the Wins So Few and Far In Between
Why the all the negativity! Sure the Sabres are not a great team - but can't fans just enjoy a win every now and then without criticizing the team and coach. Maybe Rolston is just for the interim but give the man some credit - he is showing some emotion behind the bench and he is encouraging the players during the game. So Sabre fans, enjoy the wins while they last.

RE: Rolston is a fool
hopefully they replace him with you. if not, then replace him with a Cheektowagan, we'd win the President's Trophy AND the Cup with a Cheektowagan coaching the team.

Great win, Gerbe!!!!! finally scoring goals again!!! dadsonpowermode fan
As a real fan of the Buffalo Sabres, I am happy they are finally winning again, hope they can keep it up.This team has alot of talent, they should be winning more games. Great job Gerbe, I am so glad you have ended your scoring drought, count me as fan of yours always.Coach Rolston,I am becoming a believer in your system as well. Go Sabres!!!!!
03/01/2013 8:31AM
re; Rolston is a fool
??? what? he's a fool because he played a rookie who is not ready for 15-20 minutes a game. He'll play more minutes when he shows he's ready for them. Grigs is a good kid but no way is he ready for top 6 minutes and if you watched him and the team you'd already know that my friend.
03/01/2013 9:12AM
Wasn't impressed
Miller stopped 40, but gave up two bad ones again with leads. This team still sucks. Regier better wake up and start making moves. I hope this coach is only here as interim. There is no difference from Ruff in the style of play and getting badly out shot. Bring on the BOO'S when the Devils come to FNC and Brodeur records another shutout. Sabres may get 16 shots on goal in a slumber. I hate this team.

Any trades yet???
One thing that's good. Colorado matched Calgarys offer sheet on O'Reilly. Just hope the Sabres deadhead GM is aware that Colorado can trade him after the season and knows Calgary may still be interested and beats them to it. Wait...wait...wait...hold it...hold it...HOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLD IT!!! Regeir may be fired after the season. The next GM will have to do it. Yes, FIRE REGEIR!!!
03/01/2013 10:57AM
Wrong Headline !!
Should read: "Sabres squander lead with 1:30 left on the clock"
03/01/2013 11:14AM
re: But...
yes they do still suck and so do you and everyone else up there in the sespool of America...LOSERS

WGR Fan Poll
Someone is either fixing the votes again or there is some idiot that keeps refreshing the site and voting yes. Improvement??? You got to be joking. A poll like this shouldn't have even come out until after the two weekend games vs the Devils and the Rangers. By the way another afternoon game at home. Shove the afternoon games. Hockey is meant to be played at night. Back to the voting on this putrid poll...Who puts these premature polls on here. Is it the "nerd" Jeremy or the "turd" Fisher??? It is definitely not the "charmin soft" Simon. Refresh and re-do the same poll Monday after the Sabres two losses coming this weekend and lock it to one vote per person. No will be a runaway. What improvement??? The Rags shot total should hit 50 Sunday.

Wasted Year
To all the 'fans' to who want Grigerenko to play more clearly don't watch hockey or understand it to realize that he is not physically or mentally ready to play in the NHL. Last year he played in the Quebec jr. league which does not to develop a player's skills. Yet, mgmt kept him and wasted a year on his rookie contract on a 48-game season where he'll play maybe half the games. So now the clock is ticking on his next contract and FA. Well done Buffalo - your decisions continue to draw smiles from the rest of the league.
03/01/2013 11:43AM
RE: finally
Winning 4-3 in a shootout means Buffalo only scored 3 goals. Do you understand anything about the NHL?
03/01/2013 11:53AM
Backup Goalies
That's all the Sabres face anymore. They have become the old Islanders. How can you tell just how good your team really is when you play against backup goalies.
03/01/2013 1:31PM
Please!
Why the excitement? They faced 2 backup goalies on this trip. Their play was far from excellent. The giveaways continue, their scoring against good goalies remains pathetic. Ryan Miller is the sole reason they are in these games (outshot 43-25 in Florida). They are in no way even close to being a contender. This is our annual great run for 9th place. They would be better off tanking and making the necessary changes starting with the GM and players to truly build this club into a viable contender.

RE: "you can bet DINEEN won't come out flat"
Well genius, you seem quite enthusiastic and encouraged after Walmart b-a-r-e-l-y outlasted the lowly Panthers!!! Seems you should be especially thrilled with The WEEBLE finally finding a nut or 2 after a whole year, and WEENIS doing something other than getting thrown out of EVERY faceoff every game. But what's REALLY got have you tickled PINK, is that WALMART is DEAD LAST 9 POINTS BEHIND THE "LAFFS" Good post though... we're gonna have some more FUN soon... Stay tuned sunshine... I trust in FOREVERFORE YOU ALL! LOL!!!
03/02/2013 8:48AM
Flynn called up?
Where are the trades??? Teams are active. Boy, that Regier is a nit wit.
