Rangers Get 3-2 Shootout Win Over Sabres

Rick Nash scored in regulation and again in the shootout, lifting the Rangers to a 3-2 win over the Sabres (9-12-2, 20 pts.), denying Buffalo a fourth straight win. Drew Stafford and Nathan Gerbe scored in the loss.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, but Drew Stafford broke the goose eggs at 8:04 of the second frame with his second of the season. Mikhail Grigorenko stayed with the puck following a faceoff to the left of Lundqvist. The Sabres rookie dished a pass back to Stafford, who snapped a shot past the New York netminder for a 1-0 Buffalo lead.

It stayed that way until early in the third period when Patrick Kaleta sent Brad Richards flying into the boards from behind, earning the Sabres forward a five-minute major and a game misconduct. With Andrej Sekera already in the penalty box for a hooking call, the Rangers wasted no time taking advantage of their 5-on-3 opportunity. Just seven seconds in, Nash hit Derek Stepan with a cross-crease pass and Stepan ripped a one-timer past Miller's stick side. New York took a 2-1 lead less than a minute later when Nash found the net with a goal of his own.

With the MSG crowd at full volume and momentum on their side, the Rangers looked poised to break the game wide open as their five-minute power play continued. Nathan Gerbe, however, sent the New York fans into a stunned silence with a shorthanded tally in the waning seconds of Kaleta's major. Gerbe got the play started with a nice forecheck attempt in his own end and Steve Ott carried the loose puck over the Rangers blueline. Ott put a slick move on Nash and found a wide-open Gerbe, who one-timed a shot past Lundqvist to make it a 2-2 game.

With both Nash and Dan Girardi in the box, the latter called for boarding Tyler Ennis early in overtime, the Sabres could not take advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity in the extra frame. The missed chance underscored an 0 for 5 night on the power play for the Sabres as they remain at the bottom of the league with the man advantage.

Nash and Ryan Callahan beat Miller in the shootout while Lundqvist denied both Jason Pominville and Tyler Ennis to give New York the 3-2 victory.

The Sabres travel to Carolina on Tuesday to face the Hurricanes. Hear the call at 7 p.m. on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network with Rick Jeanneret and Rob Ray.

Happy the team escaped with a point, dadsonpowermode fan
First and foremost I am glad the team at least gained a point against the rangers. Gerbe, keep it going, what a goal!!! I am angry with Pat Kaleta,, this team had a chance to win this game until your penalty, I feel cost the Sabres a win. Still hopeful at a chance for the team to get into the playoffs, but worried about the powerplay, last in the league come on guys, once again the Sabres are better than this.

Re: Angola's Goon
It's jay goff's like you that I'd like to punch in the face. Your a total douch bag and your lame old played out comments are boring and remind me of something a 7 yr old would say. Why don't you take some time off and come up with some new material. Oh wait I forgot how unintelligent you are.

Sabres playing better but.............
The Sabres are playing better but they still struggle to just win out right against their fellow bottom feeders. Unfortunately they still can't score goals, they still play poor defense and they still tend to back away from any type of physical play. Please pardon me if I don't get excited about 1 win and 3 ties in the last 4 games. I'm an old school hockey fan that thinks the the shoot out in hockey is garbage. Like I said, they are playing better but they still can't win games out right. I feel terrible for coach Rolston he won't be here next season after Regier is fired. The next GM is going to want his guy behind the bench.

Miller Exhausted
If you could not see Miller was exhausted by the end of regulation you know nothing. They never had a chance in the shootout. Three games in four days for a NHL team is crazy. You are going to see a large uptick in injuries. I hope the players and ownersthink it was worth it. Richards looked like he was dead yet he was right back on the ice less then a minute later. It was a stupid hit by Kaleta however.

Power Play
I like Rolston but continuing the same old same old on the power play is ridiculous. Not only has it not been successful it has created many more chances for the opposition. Go back to two defensemen at the point and move Pomminville down low. Definitelymore Grigorenko on the PP. Shouldn't that be where you use talented offensive players?
03/04/2013 9:05AM
Any trades yet???
This isn't good enough. Time to turn off the elevator music and get to the unfinished business. Wake up Regeir! On Kaleta, I had enough of his antics. Waive the bum!
03/04/2013 9:14AM
Didn't face a backup goalie this time
Result...LOSS. Notice the AM show is back on the "shill" wagon hearing a few bars of it this morning. I pulled the plug. This team still needs serious changes. This team isn't going anywhere.
03/04/2013 9:28AM
Without talent, team can only go so far...
Yes, they won some games but didn't anyone notice that that was three straight shootouts? How long do you suppose that will pass as good hockey? The team is weak on defense despite all the bragging about how "deep" they were before the season started. They have Myers completely lost out there and thinking he is a defensive defenseman when in fact he is an offensive one. Sekera is useless as is Sulzar and Leopold. Weber is fine, but Pardy is slow and Regehr is not getting any faster. Forwards? If I hear one more person tell me that Grigorenko has "a ton of talent" I think I'm going to scream! Based on what do all these people get this information? Have you watched the kid play? He is a NON-FACTOR in every shift he is on. The assists he gets are not "wow, what a pass" but "oh, they scored how'd that happen." Seriously? Gerbe has no place being on the ice and he is more effective than Grigorenko who, by the way, has no speed whatsoever. Wanna grasp at straws, fine but stop doing so every day like the media is. I want the Sabres to win, but they simply have but a couple of players who are close to star level and the rest are "filler" for the team. The coach is gone and that is great but they need a new GM and it better be someone from OUTSIDE the organization same with the next coach because "Mr. Interim" ain't showing me much so far other than goon hockey.
03/04/2013 9:33AM
Predictable
They faced a 1st string golie and lost again. No powerpaly goals in 5 chances. No first round elimination this year.
03/04/2013 10:59AM
Next time
All Kaleta has to do is sneeze on Richards and he'll slam into the boards what a joke
03/04/2013 11:24AM
Power play sucks
A bigger reason for the Sabres record than blaming it all on Tyler Myers. Any other GM would go out and do something about it. Darcy's time is up and must be relieved of his duties for doing nothing. He is a nitwit.
03/04/2013 11:47AM
What are the shills so excited about?
Three points out of a playoff spot and overlooking the games in hand the teams ahead of the Sabres have or the ones behind them have. This team is going NO WHERE. IT'S TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LAAAAAAAAATE!!! Don't they get it? Going to shootouts isn't helping either. The Sabres still suck and I can't wait for the excuses at the seasons end. Keep buying those tickets and what it is...is what it is. Keep on shilling GR and your annual celebrity golf tournament will be here faster than a locomotive.

That was just a love tap, a shove
I can't believe Pat K. got a 5 min major and a game misconduct. The hit Ennis took was just as bad if not worse. It was a shove, not a hit. It looked like Richards wasn't expecting it and he was just starting to lean forward. That combination made the result what it was. Pat wasn't trying to hurt the guy or get a penalty. He was just trying to keep him off balance. I disagree with Paul H. in that good teams don't take these kind of penalties. Sure they do, and all the time. The difference is they have much better special teams and 5v5 so they can get through it. I will be mad if he gets suspended, because I couldn't see any intent. Also, did anyone else think why couldn't we have signed a guy like Rick Nash? I thought he was a force on the ice last night. And lastly - I wrote last week that Gerbe was looking better and I wished people would learn from him and be more energetic and never say die; and that he would start having major impact on the team. That all came true, and I really love watching him play. His play should be our identity.

If That Mugging happened to the Sabres....
John Rigas, Tom Golisano, Larry Quinn, Terry Pegula, Darcy Regeir, Lindy Ruff, James Patrick, and Byron Brown would have ALL written a strongly worded letter CRYING to the NHL offices about how "Rough" the play in the NHL is!!!! Curiously on a last place sorry team they happen to have THE BIGGEST CHEAPSHOT ARTIST in the NHL, who apparently does no wrong here! What a bunch of LOOSERS, on the ice and in the seats!!! FORE IS COMIN FAST!!!

re: Richards is a...... player never to be found on a Buffalo roster see below...
Richards won the Conn Smythe, the Lady Byng Trophy, the Stanley Cup, the World Cup of Hockey Championship playing on Team Canada. Richards holds the record for game-winning goals in a single playoff season with seven in 2004, overtaking Joe Sakic’s andJoe Nieuwendyk’s record of six.... Man.... You really should stop doing drugs.

Two bad shootout goals given up by Miller
Both goals could have been stopped. Use the dam goal stick and poke check the puck instead of flopping like a fish.

Comment :
Since Terry Pegula asked, what has Darcy done wrong?
  missed playoffs last two years
  too loyal to his players
  no extensive coach search
too much money too early for Myers
